Magic items worn by animals

3.5/d20/OGL

Hi,

I have a situation in one of my campaigns where a player would like his wolf to wear a set of magical bracers the party found.

He claims that since rings, etc. shrink or grow to fit the wearer, bracers should, as well.

I don't want to be a harda$$, but this doesn't seem right to me.

Suggestions/opinions?

Thanks, all!

Hey, if beholders can wear magic rings on their eyestalks (as it states in Lords of Madness ) then wolves could wear bracers on their legs. Of course, if you wanted to get technical you could say that bracers designed for humanoids might be very uncomfortable for wolves. Though bracers do resize to fit different wearers (just like rings and suits of armor), do they change form to fit creatures without humanoid limbs? That's a question you have to answer before allowing the PC to make his little alteration. As I said before though, beholders can wear rings on their eyestalks, so a wolf wearing bracers is not so unusual.

There was an old Dragon magazine article that detailed magic items for animal companions and familiars. Lots of fascinating stuff, wish I could remember what issue it was in...

Anyway, you could rule that without some physical modifications, the wolf would take a penalty on his movement/attack, that sorta thing, due to the fact he wouldn't be able to move as freely or as easily. Support your local blacksmith!
