Monster Parts For Sale!

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

What would a Beholder eye fetch and what could it be used for? What about a stirges beak, a stag betteles horn, a Gricks tentacles, a trolls claw or a vampire's tooth?

There must be thousands of valuable monsters body parts that could be retrieved by adventures and sold to a interested buyer for a nice profit. But what parts and what monsters? And what use could these parts have?

My request is to have an article to do with Monster Parts - there sale price and uses.

Sample Buyers would also be great - store, patron, marketplace etc

Thanks

Heck people should post their ideas here. That way we'd get a variety of unique ideas from the multitudes who read these boards.

That sounds like a really fun article, Delvesdeep. You should send in a query and suggest it to the editors. :)

I thought this was the place for suggestions? Do you think that they don't really read this forum? If you think this is true then tell me where to send it and I'll email it through.

I like the idea of playing around with prices/uses here though. Do you want to give it a try?

Right at the top of this forum is a link to the Writer's Guidelines. That'll guide you through the process. The e-mail address is dragon@paizo.com . Read the guidelines first, though, so you know what to expect.

It sounds like an awesome idea - good luck.

I've pitched that idea myself once or twice but to no avail, I couldn't find the right hook. The closest I came was some tangential notes I managed to slip into The Plunderer's Handbook (perhaps when no one was looking :) ).

I like that idea of the buyers and marketplaces though, it's not something that occurred to me. Hopefully that will push you over the top. Areas I'd love to see covered:

-Spell components (especially those metamagic ones)

-Magic item materials (e.g. wands made from dragonbone, extra abilities of some sort?)

-Curiosities, novelties and trinkets (e.g. minotaur mead horn)

-Industrial uses (e.g. using ground xorn as jewler's rouge)

-ultra-masterwork items (a master craftsmen and superior materials,e.g. a bow made from dragon bone)

-Gormet Food (baked basilisk anyone...)

I think that what delvesdeep was thinking is more along the line of thought presented in Tamora Pierce's novels (The Lioness Quartet, the Immortals series, and the Protector of the Small.) In 'Squire', the third novel in the Protector of the Small series, the main character, Keladry uses a cloth band with griffon feathers sewn to it. It enabled her to see through illusions. Because apparently it is impossible to lie to griffons.

Also any arrows that used griffon feathers (or feathers from any type of immortal also enabled enough of a bonus to the shot and ignored most human that they're commonly called 'wizard-slayers'.

Hmm... an article similar in nature to this, but based entirely on the Power Component idea was already published in one of the Dragons, I believe the Races of Power issue. But I take it you mean even more things, like what parts could be used to make interesting alchemical substances and things. If so I just might be able to make some money, I do that in my campaign. Components for making items is a prerequisite for a lot of the items of my campaign, got the idea from some Dragon articles that had that kind of thing, and I really liked the idea. But, ya know, if the idea doesn't take with Dragon, I could either post some of them here or e-mail it to you, guess we'll just see.

I know that I may be drawn and quartered for suggesting digging up the past, but if you look back at some of the OLD backissues of Dragon, you can find many of these items and such. Look specifically at "the ecology of..." articles.
If you don't wnat to shuck out the money to try and get all of these back issues, then do as I did and try to find a copy of the Dragon Magazine Archive on CD-ROM. It is a wonderful resource. And even if you don't want to try to convert stuff from the old editions, then you can still use plenty of the info for storylines and background legends. There was even an article at one point that had rules for sowing dragon's teeth like Jason and the Argonauts... Cool no?

As far as superior items such as dragon bones go, ("ultra-masterwork items" etc...) there are many various mentionings of such things if you have the time and patience to scan a LOT of material. The Monster Manual makes reference to dragon materials and such, but the Draconomicon is a wonderful book if your PC's slay these mythical beasts on a regular basis. For example, although I am not usually a power gamer, I do have a character in an Epic campaign who has Dragoncraft scale mail (which counts as light armor, great for my ranger) as well as a mighty composite dragoncraft longbow of the mighty dragon hunter. Dragoncraft materials are clearly superior to many other things. And yet I ramble...
The best advice that I can give is to check out as much stuff as you can....
