Query Length

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

I remember reading somewhere that there was a desired query length for Dungeon, but when I read the submission guidelines for Dragon I couldn't find anything. So, is there any specifics on queries for Dragon?

Fraust -

There's a whole thread where this is discussed. Dragon seems to prefer short, short queries - no more than a paragraph or two, and they prefer to receive several at once.... I'll see if I can find the thread to direct you... some folks even kindly posted some of their past queries to give some guidance.

For Dungeon, queries should be as short as they have to be. Generally, if a query is longer than 2 pages, that's a good indicator that your adventure is a bit too copmlicated or long for publication in the magazine.

Well, I found one of the discussions here:

Queries in small articles

It applied mainly to class act articles - but it's a start.

One more quick question. This is definetly going to show my ignorance when it comes to writing (incase my spelling hasn't alread), but what does it mean by double spaced? I think I read somewhere the Dungeon queries had to be double spaced.

It means that when printed there's a blank line between every line of text. In MS Word, it's as simple as a setting (though I'd have to go looking for where exactly).

In Word:

Select from the top menu -> Format
Select from the drop down menu --> Paragraph
Dialog Box will open, line spacing is in the lower right side.
