[submissions] Dear sire or madman...

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

A fairly simple question really, but I'm a first-timer and I don't know any better. Just who should submissions be addressed to? I feel rather silly putting...

'Dear Dungeon Staff,'

...at the top of submission e-mails.

Cheers,
'Cat.

EDIT: can't believe I mis-spelled 'Dungeon' in my first post. The shame...

I'll let the Dungeon staff answer, but I think it's funnier with the mis-spelling.

On submission letters (even cover letters) where the receipent is unknown, I just open it up with "Hello"

I always just open with "Dear Editor" since I never know which of the editors is going to read it first. A number of the other authors have mentioned on some past messageboard threads that they address everything to Erik, since he's the Editor-in-Chief for both magazines.

I suspect that the editors care a lot more about the content of your submission and your adherence to the guidelines than your salutation. Tell a good story and follow the guidelines - oh, and be prepared to wait for a long time for a response... they are hard working and lacking an administrative assistant, so responses can take quite a while.

As long as it's not something like, "Dear Chump" or "Hey Stinkface!" there's not really any guidelines. I suppose the best way to open the letter, if you aren't sending it specifically to one of us, is either "Hello" (or some variant) or "Dear Editor".

Thanks for the clarification, all. I realise the question was somewhat irrelevant, but little things like that have tripped me up before. For example, I had 'Oi you!' before and I see now that just wouldn't have done...

I prefer "Yo, d00dz!"

Vic -

I'll remember that when Amazing Stories gets back up and running, so don't be surprised to see it on the submissions!

I suggest the following:

"To the Most Proficient & Enlightened, Sage with No Equal, Iquander the Extraordinaire."
