Need help with undead selection

3.5/d20/OGL

I'm trying to find a suitable undead type that will fit the following criteria:

Died heroically.
Continues to enact duty.
Powerful enough to subdue a CR 7ish arcane casting crypt spawn.

There can be multiple of them so they don't necessarily have to be CR 7ish themselves.

A Spectral Guardian/Minion would've suited the task well, IIRC, but I can't find them in any 3.0 or 3.5 resource.

Any suggestions?

Check out the sacred watcher template in the Book of Exalted Deeds. The sample monster's even CR 7 already!

Other than that, a plain old ghost should do the job.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

But could a couple of ghosts prevent, say, a crypt spawn from leaving, say, a tower... forever?

Mummys often remain in one place forever, usually a large tomb complex, guarding it against any intruders. It shouldn't be hard to justify an eternal guardian keeping something in as well as intruders out (ie a jailer). Some assistance would likely be needed for the mummification process, but a dying request to a nearby ally to be able to continue their duty by whatever methods necessary, and that ally gets him/her mummified. Someplace in a book, I can't quite remember where,
is a prestige class specifically for mummies, the mummy tomb guardian or something like that. Maybe somebody else can remember what I'm thinking about.

Just an idea.

Ah, I managed to get a look at the sacred watcher template and although the justifications for their existance isn't quite on par with what I want, I'm sure that nobody will mind finaggling it a bit to suit.

Their positive energy attack is perfect to keep a crypt spawn cowed.
