The Chisel

Shackled City Adventure Path

dose anyone else see similarities between the chisel and the freemasons? I know that my party will notice these rather quickly because we are a group of all senior DeMolays (except for the girl in the party)...

I sure hope that people out there know what DeMoaly and the freemasons are.

lets see Some similarities...
The Name to start with
the fact they are secret organization of merchants and artisans... (The masons started this way and were until about 400 years ago)

they are based in the stonemason district of a city (the freemasons started as stonemasons)

The Freemasons intent is to help people and make the community better... however they have not shifted to selfish cause

it's just interesting

Yeah, I think a lot of people noticed the similarities. As a matter of fact, they're referred to the masons rather than the chisel in a few threads.

On the other hand, I don't know what (or who) DeMoaly is.

Seeing how you're familiar with the real-world counterparts of the chisel, how about some details on how they would react to events in cauldron after the demonscar legacy? The chisel is suspiciously absent during the rest of the AP.

First of all DeMolay is the youth group version of DeMolay…

Second If it were the Masons and not the chisel (the big different being that chisel has become greedy in the campaign) They would stay in the back ground thinking of a way to revolt against unjust taxation, They would try and rally the people of both red gorge and cauldron, and have secret meeting nights where the could meet in a remote place (usually in a hall above a local shop or tavern that one of them owns) and talk about ways that they could make life better…

Good example the Boston tea party was orchestrated by the Freemasons so something to that matter. The met in a Masonic hall above a tavern decided that the taxing was unfair and dumped the tea over board. In cauldrons case they might try and expose the local leadership so that people might go against the local leadership.

In the meeting after the volcano erupts the would have been present but not showing it (there would be many members there they just would not admit to being members of the chisel) because the meeting is the leaders merchants and the other movers and shakers of the city witch would have a large representation of chisel members in that group.

Also remember secret handshakes, passwords, and symbols to make sure members could identify themselves to other members in a crowded room with out letting anyone else know that they are part of the organization.

I'm going to change the chisel a little bit and keep the greedy party out of my story. They would be a CG organization. In other words they will use almost any means even if it breaks the law to make sure good things happen… the reasonable behind that is that what good is a law if it is not a good law who should fallow a law that needs to be rewritten

Hope this helps

Thanks,

That helps allot. I've just introduced Maavu a couple of sessions ago. I'm running the Hulk Smash scenario in a few days. I may use some of this stuff to alter his reaction. I'll also see how I use that in the tax riot scenario.

It's really cool how several of us are not far from each other in the adventure path, GlassJaw I don't this is to far a head of us. I will be running the very end of flood season Sunday (as in the cleared out the korpu ruins and have to get out because the cage fell but they have 7 of the wands have and have killed everything but the korpu, they also have to actually fix the flood situation witch should be fun)

And I have a good feeling that I will be running the umber hulk session that night too… It's just cool that we are at about the same place in the campaign.

I have a question how did you introduce maavu before the umberhulk attack? This is my first time as a DM and I'm need to work on introducing new NPC's before they are the main part of the story… like I need to work in tygot before demonskar I'm thinking of making them sell all of their art work to him… Stuff like that… Amy suggestions?

I agree Molay, I am starting Flood Season tonight, and Archade just started Life's bazaar last night.

We both have journal threads, why don't you start one yourself, and we can keep track of each other's campaigns and get ideas and stuff.

are bolth close too... i think i might do that... i have nothing better to do at work

Little late to this party...the Chisel aren't just similar to the Freemasons, it's an out and out ripoff. I hope I don't offend anyone when I say this, but when I introduced them in the campaign (against my better judgment) it about caused a riot with my players. I mean, and homage or drawing inspiration is one thing, but come on. That would be like me introducing to rival noble houses called the Donkeys and the Elephants who both control the local government, and then trying to call it original.

My advice? Scrap it. Just have Maavu be an interested third party and leave it at that.

Me being a mason and one other party member being a Mason and all the the party members being aware of the masonic world i don;t think that any of them would be offended but i think that they will be interested and get a good laugh out of the simmilariys.
