Scarab Sages

The trailers for the H2G2 movie are starting to trickle in and I couldn't be more excited! It looks absolutely beautiful and like it should be pretty pitch perfect. Alan Rickman sounds like he was meant to be the voice of Marvin, the Paranoid Android. The Vogons look properly repulsive. It looks like they've solved the whole Zaphod's second head thing in an interesting manner. I can't wait for opening night (April 29th)!!

A very nicely cut trailer can be viewed here...

Oh yeah, I thought it was great.

The love triangle thing was a little different, but I guess that's the price you pay to get the movie made. . . Marvin is still my favorite character, and I definitely want an action figure....

It was pretty weak. Out of the people I went with, the ones who had never read the books were confused and the ones that had were disgusted by the love angle and what they did to Zaphod's character. Both groups thought the new plot elements like Humma Cavula were obviously out-of-place and detracted from the overall narrative. I give it 5/10. Not awful, but not great and completely forgettable.

I am a fan from way back, ever since they first aired the series on U.S. public radio. I have since read all the books, seen the TV show, played the computer game, and thoroughly enjoyed the Tertiary Phase radio program.

The movie was great. It was not terribly funny in the "laugh out loud" manner of the radio or TV shows, but it was wildly entertaining in its own right.

Die-hard fans will enjoy it if they go into it with an open mind (or two).

As a longtime fan of HHGG in all formats ever (well, okay, I never saw any of the stage adaptations), I enjoyed the movie very much. I quite liked the new role for Trillian - it's pretty much the first time she's actually been a useful character. Zaphod was a little too over-the-top once or twice, but I think it all worked out in the end. (I still prefer the animations from the TV series, though.)
