Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

has anyone asked Rich Burlew if he would be willing to make Order of the Stick comics for dungeon magazine? My friends and i love his work, and i think it would be a great adition if he was interested.

Why dungeon? I had a thread to try and get it into dragon, both here and on the GiantITP website. Rich is interested, but unfortunately no-one from Paizo has read his comics (if they would they'd be begging him to write comics).

In case one of them is reading this, the website is:

Oh, we've read his comics. They're pretty damn funny. Rich should know he has lots and lots of fans.

We'll be revisiting comics a little later this year. You never know what might happen at that point.

On the other hand, comics are _very_ expensive, and it would be easier to afford more of them if more people bought the damn magazines. ;)

Btw, he's making a book of the first 121 of his comics, and the first day on the market 647 people pre-ordered (granted, he chose christmas season). By now it's almost 3000, so many that Rich intends to quit his day-job and become a professional cartoonist. They're just that good.

He said a while ago that he'd love to write comics for dragon/dungeon, but he's waiting for them - you - to come to him...

Anything is better than Downer. Oh wait, no, there was Snarfquest--that was equally sucky.

I actually loved Snarfquest - the art in wormy was better, but Snarf as a character really made the comic for me.

Still undecided on Downer though... I need to go back and read it from the beginning.

Soooo....Comics are VERY expensive...If you cut the comics, what could you afford to put into DUNGEON? Tactical Poster Maps of encounter areas from the issue? Critical Threats? Maps of Mystery? Side-Treks? Terrain Tiles? Special Edition D&D Miniatures?

Seriously!

I'd gladly give up the comics and Wil Save for nice color gaming aids that deal with that issue.

Now this is a can of worms I bet you wish you hadn't opened.

We'll certainly not be spending less on comics, ASEO.

I appreciate your interest in making Dungeon the best possible magazine for you personally, but there are other folks out there, and the comics aren't going anywhere.

Ouch!

He he he... I know this is your baby and what you see fit goes. I've just seen lots of people make comments about losing the comics, and I've seen comments raving about the poster maps. Both would be great in every issue. But if you can only afford one, It seems that there are more "Great Poster Map" posts than "I love The Portent" posts. Personally I love good comics and I was sad when Nodwick left. But I also love things that will enhance a gaming session. It was just an idea. Just out of curiosity, what would be the cost of poster maps Vs say Downer (which I thouroughly enjoy). I know that both are expensive to produce.

Hey, here is another idea. How about having a survey section set up so that you can only vote once per account, that would let people rate what features were the most important to them. That way people could see what other readers really felt was important and it would allow you to get a constant update on the pulse of the reader.

Just thoughts.

Going monthly with DUNGEON. Great
Going full color with DUNGEON. Great
Having three adventures, one of each level range in each issue. Great
Having Adventure paths. Way Great.

You do seem to take it a bit personal when the comics and Wil Save are negatively discussed? Why is that?

We did a large survey in September and October.

Granted the survey results are not publicly available, but you can rest assured that the voice of the people is a big factor in what gets or stays in the magazines.

Cheers,
Rob

True, but I think that by showing the results in some sort of bar chart would prove valuable to the public. I'm sure you are catering to your largest fan base on each feature you publish, for to do other wise would be foolish business. As I mentioned above, I've been overwhelmingly thrilled by DUNGEON as a whole over the years. Please don't fault me for trying to get even more of a truly great thing

I'd personally be interested in seeing the approval ratings of:

Adventures low level
Adventures mid level
Adventures high level
Critical threats
Maps of Mystery
Comics
Personal Interest Column (Wil Save)
Side Treks
Poster Maps (world or tactical)
Terrain Tiles/Creature tokens
Dungeon Craft
Campaign Workbook Features

Once again, just my two cents.

Didn't that survey have some problems where some results came up the exact opposite of what people were choosing due to some error. I seem to recall that.

Just a question, why aren't the results publicly available? I don't mean getting to see each person's answers, but a set of percentages or general feel of what the sentiment was out there would be nice to see (I remember seeing an old editorial from Dungeon doing this). Aslo it gives anyone who wants to submit an article an idea of what is popular.

We plan to share selections from the survey results at some point in the relatively near future. The cartoons are very, very, very popular.

They aren't going anywhere. Comics and maps have nothing to do with each other. A full-page comic costs less than a tenth of what a poster map costs. The printing on those things is the killer.

I am always happy to receive reader feedback. I think what's happened to the magazines since I became involved with them is proof that I always have an ear open, and am always willing to make a change.

But some things are settled, and aren't changing in the short term. No matter how politely (or loudly) you ask.

The presence of comics in Dungeon is one of those things.

Feel free to keep offering suggestions for improvements, but "get rid of them" is not a comment I'm going to pay much attention to.

Just thought you should know.

There was indeed an initial problem with some of the survey questions, but it was fixed. Rest assured, everyone's vote was counted.

That is what I wanted to know. Long live Downer, from whose antics I've added a big stone boot to my game to, like Downer, a PC who lost a foot. See even comics can have some game impact. Oh yeah, and all Imps in my game now eat fingers...

I really liked the fact that Nodwik was related to the adventures in the issue...more of that if it is possible.

So you see. I only pick on the one thing that is at the bottom of my popularity list

How about...

Cool, Ok here is a positive suggestion, how about a comic related to the adventures in the same issue (or past issues). That way you don't suffer as much from Downer's problem of not being able to follow the story, especially if you miss as issue or come in part way through (if you are a new reader of Dungeon). I did't mind Nodwick in Dungeon for exactly that reason (it often gave an unorthodox solution to one of the adventures.)

I love OoTS. I finished the latest one a few days ago. It may be one of the smallest parts but comics are one of my favorite parts of the magazine.

Yeah - OoTS is just a brillianty comic. I read it religously.

Rich could make fun of the adventures in Dungeon the way Mt. Zogonia does, and probably wouldn't need a talking mushrooom.
