When I heard him read at the University Book Store this spring, I loved the noir tone of Richard Morgan's books, and I liked his intelligence and worldly perspective. I got another nudge when someone read from his first book when he won the PKD award at Norwescon a month or two later. Even after those two harbingers, Altered Carbon blew me away.

Recently I began the second of his Takeshi Kovacs books, Broken Angels, and it's surprisingly different, but still excellent. After I finish it, I'm eager to read Morgan's Market Forces, which should be hitting the U.S. next spring. He read a bit of it at UBS, and just the intro was gripping.

Any other Kovacs fans here?

Darrell Schweitzer is my current favorite author. I had emjoyed several of his short stories over the years, but it was his novel, "The Mask of the Sorcerer" that really put him into the top rank of authors for me. It was an exceptionally engaging, dream-like fantasy that is entirely believable once you accept the parameters of the narrative.

I have since gone on to read his other full-length works, including "The Shattered Goddess," "The White Isle," and the story-cycle, "We Are All Legends." I have yet to be disappointed.

I'm a Kovacs fan, and a Richard Morgan fan. The two Kovacs books are both great, but wait until you read Market Forces. It's brilliant, easily the best book I've read this young century.

If you'd like to read more about Richard, you can read my interview with him over at Science Fiction Weekly: http://www.scifi.com/sfw/issue373/interview.html.

Also, if you want a similar author to look for, try Spin State by Chris Moriarty. I think if you like the Kovacs books you'd like this too.

I don't have anything too significant to say here... but I just wanted to mention that this is exactly the kind of discussion we were hoping to foster here.

Well, I read Broken Angels and Altered Carbon in reverse order, but found them both strong books, and a welcome new voice in SF.

Lately, though, I've been enjoying M. John Harrison, after having him recommended to me a couple times.
