Apologies. I did some searching, but nothing came up with my chosen search parameters. It's probably right in front of me, in the Core Rulebook or Ultimate Magic. Anyway...

Let's say I'm a Cleric of "Insert God Here", whose domains are Freedom and Madness. I've chosen to be Neutral, and channel negative energy primarily. Here is my question.

When I choose to, in combat, channel negative energy to harm the living, do I:

1) choose which effect I want (the "slow" effect or the "confusion") at that moment, or
2) is this something chosen at character creation?

Restated: Once I say I'm going to go with Variant Channeling, are both domain variants open to me, or do I have to select one only.

Thanks in advance.

@Sheness The Hollow & AdviceDroid (whom I assume are the same person, based on your use of the same terminology):

Based on your enthusiasm for the subject matter and your command of the requisite knowledge / rules...I strongly suggest you write a guide on this very specific topic.

I would read it great interest. As would others. Hurry, before this thread is relegated to eventual obscurity.

Thank you both. I have a better understanding, now, of the fatigued condition and the effects of the fatigued condition. One follow-up question, however:

In the above example, forget about the Rager's Aid; it's not there. Can a character get multiple, consecutive (round to round) uses of Bolstered Resilience by simply having the Cord?

The Cord appears to refer to the condition, not the effect(s) of the condition. It also has a trade off / counterbalance; the 1d6 nonlethal.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I have a question. Searching didn't find me any threads that cover this specifically. The question concerns my halfling fighter (who has DR via Cautious Fighter & the Stalwart feat tree), but I suppose Barbarians would want to listen in. You will want to ponder these items before answering...

Cord Of Stubborn Resolve (Ultimate Equipment, Wondrous Items, Belt Slot)
Rager's Aid (ACG, Alchemical Remedies)
Bolstered Resilience (Ultimate Combat, Feats, not a combat feat)

Hold on tight...

Assume I've just gained 9th level and have taken Bolstered Resilience, and I've also purchased a Cord Of Stubborn Resolve. Let's also assume I've used some leftover gold to buy a few packets / wads / uses of Rager's Aid. Scenario: my groups is fighting an HBB (Hypothetical Big Baddie), and it has taken some damage (say 50 to 75%, i.e. the end of the battle is within sight). Finally, my question:

If I've taken a round to throw a wad of Rager's Aid in my mouth (and begin chewing), and I re-enter the battle, and announce on my turn to my DM that (as a swift action) I wish to double my DR this round (Bolstered Resilience) until I'm hit or the start of my next turn. Can I continue to do this for 5 more rounds (Rager's Aid), as we fight the HBB, *WITHOUT* having to roll the 1d6 (nonlethal damage, Cord Of Stubborn Resolve) until I'm exhausted. At which point I make a single 1d6 roll and am (no escaping it) fatigued. But not exhausted.

This seems a better, although cheezy, way to go (using the RAW), then simply doing without the Rager's Aid and taking the 1d6 nonlethal every round. If I'm mistaken about all of this, I'm confident one of you will find what I missed.

We're all about to hit 9th soon, so this is quite relevant. All insight is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Apologies for long-windedness.

Oh, hey, and as a fun addendum question: At the end of the above battle (I'm fatigued), couldn't I just slump down in a corner and open a jar of Halfling Alchemical Preserves (ARG, Halfling Equipment), and be okay again within moments?

Excellent. I *will* get the side-eye from my GM, which is why I asked. Paizo messageboard conventional wisdom doesn't always sway him, but it helps.

I like to envision the Swashbuckler doing something like Blade* did (first movie, first fight scene): draws sword, then makes a semicircle in front of him as if to say: "This is my dance space".

Assuming a Dex-build Swash, it wouldn't be unrealistic to have 7 or 8 AoO's by Level 5. It'd be nice to have another outlet (besides parry/riposte) to use them. Having this extended Reach would help here.

Thanks for your replies.

*Recognizes Blade is not a Swashbuckler; just painting an image.

Hi all,

If I am (example) a Swashbuckler who has obtained a Blue Scarf (Swordmaster's Flair), and who also takes Lunge at 7th Level...

Do both the Scarf, and the Feat, stack (if I use them both). Is my Reach now 15'?

Thanks in advance (I *did* search, but nothing specific on this issue).

I disagree with your Halfling assessment; giving them a "red color". They should, I think, be green or even blue.

(I should have prefaced: this is just 1 disagreement; I loved your guide overall. I continue...)

YES, the ability scores suck. But you can play with the math and re-configure to make your CON awesome and your STR passable. YES, their favored class option sucks. Oh well, take the HP/level I guess.

The beauty of the Halfling is (and if anyone out there knows of ANY other feat that does something similar, please chime in): Cautious Fighter.

This allows him to MAXIMIZE the Endurance / Die Hard / Stalwart bonus (assuming 3 ranks in Acro) at Level 7. That's a total DR of 8/- at Level 7, if you're an Invulnerable Rager.

At Level 11, you're at DR 17/- (!!!). That's IR levels, plus Improved Stalwart, plus (I'd assume) your 8th and 10th rage powers being Increased Damage Reduction.

YES, I realize you must Fight Defensively all the time. But look at that again: DR 17/-, at Level 11. Those using Combat Expertise are still languishing at +6 DR, until they hit L12 (and even then it's only a +8).

For your consideration.

Nice guide.

There are a couple of mentions of bodyguard only requiring you to be adjacent to the ally. Would somebody point me to this thread please? I intend on playing a character with this feat and would like this proof on hand for PFS.

Sure thing.

What the original poster said

Strongly consider the fighter class: for what you have in mind, feats are worth twice your weight (because you're a halfling) in gold. Your entire build's based around "Helpful", yes? Great idea.

Take Combat Reflexes and Bodyguard early. You'll likely have a high Dex. 3 to 4 opportunities, EVERY ROUND, of giving your allies a +4 to their AC = priceless. You don't have threaten the baddie. Just be adjacent to the to-be-bolstered ally.*

Take the Combat Expertise, Gang Up, and Team Up tree. Now you can give an adjacent ally a +4 to their attack, as well (and you can do it as a move action, so you still get the chance to get your attack in!)

Feats like Lucky Halfling and Well-Prepared (as others above have said) are great "fillers" and should be strongly considered.

Finally, consider grabbing Taunt and another feat or two to give you options to Intimidate (ex: Enforcer, Weapon Focus + Dazzling Display, etc)...you achieve some helpful crowd-control with a minor debuff. Don't do it the usual (Intimidate) way, because your small size gives you a -4. But Taunt bypasses this, so put your points in Bluff.

If your CHA score gives you a positive modifier, consider Battle Cry.

The Cautious Fighter / Blundering Defense combo is also a boon to your allies.

Obviously, a feat-intensive idea. But you could have a tough little helpful bastard who gives anyone he's standing next to a +2 bonus (Cautious Fighter / Blundering Defense / fighting defensively), with multiple options of STACKING another +4 bonus (Bodyguard)**, who also can assist in one ally's attack roll +4 (Team Up), while still getting his own attack in.

A very ego-less build. Great idea (as I said). I considered building you an example, but you get the idea.

*Confirmed. On a thread at this site.
**if he has a shield and Saving Shield, yet another +2

In the case of the invulnerable rager DR 13/- is the best he can do.

Actually...

A Halfling Invulnerable Rager, with Endurance (1), Die Hard (3), Stalwart (5), Cautious Fighter (7), and Improved Stalwart (11)...fighting defensively all the time...with at least 3 ranks in Acrobatics...while raging:

DR 23/- is the best he can do.

Count The Dead - If the barbarian deals enough damage to drop a creature (by dropping it below 0 hit points or killing it), he/she gets an immediate, extra melee attack against another creature within reach. The extra attack = same bonus as the attack that dropped the previous creature. No 5-foot step. Minimum 8th level (4 rage points per extra attack). i.e. old Cleave / Great Cleave

New Feat (Barbarians only, one-time only) All rage powers cost -1 (4's become 3's, 8's become 7's, etc).

Just my 0.02. I suck at this.

Please refrain from whipping out your meat, or I'll actually begin to look like my avatar. I'm sorry...that didn't help, did it? Back on topic, go!

There is agreement in my group, with the OP here, on this issue. My current GM is going to kill me, because this was his idea. This is quasi on-topic:

Enable Feat-Swappage (it's like the Sorcerer's ability to swap spells at 4th [etc]), but for feats. Fighters would get swappage more often, other classes...less so.

You could do this in conjunction with the point-system, mentioned above.

Cool down, take a few days off until GenCon UK is over and prepare mentally for posting your own thoughts and reading dozens of threads about all imaginable issues with the classes.

Aye, agreed: give these folk time to come back from UK, sift through all this stuff, and address things.
