I'm playing an unchained ninja kitsune which has -2 to strength and I decided to spec into Dex at 19 but trash strength to 7. Normally from my high dex I would choose light armor such as a chain shirt or studded leather which should not affect anything but my my AC.

Though looking at the encumbrance rules having 7 strength means I can only carry 23 pounds worth of items so wearing a chain shirt sets me to medium load by default decreasing my max dex to 3 and giving me 20 speed, and wearing studded leather and holding 2 wakizashi's puts me 1 over. This seems odd to me as 23 pounds is not that much. Is putting 7 in a stat unrealistic ( this is how we usually play ) or is 7 strength really that harmful?

If it really does affect my maximum load I can always switch armors but I would prefer a work around.

Turn 1: Pounce- claw, claw, rake, rake, bite (grab)

Turn 2: rake, rake (free action), grapple for effect- usually damage or pin.

Rake triggers off either of two conditions. 1) charging with the pounce ability. 2) starting your turn with the grappled condition. If you meet either condition you get your 2 rake attacks (which are claws for any feats/abilities that key off of claws).

Can I really use rake attacks before I have maintained a grapple, that doesn't sound quite right..?

You can use Rake only if the target is grappled, and the first thing you must do when a turn start is to decide if you maintain a grapple and then, before you do anything affected by you maintaining the grapple you must try to maintain it.

There is little stuff you can do without knowing first if you have maintained a grapple or not.
No movement, as that is affected by the grapple.
No spellcasting, as that is affected by the grapple (if you are grappled you have to make a concentration check to cast a spell).
No standard action, as trying to maintain a grapple requires one.

You can activate exceptional and supernatural abilities that are free or swift actions and drop items held in your hands. Maybe some move equivalent action, but nothing specific come to my mind.

so rake after?

I agree with you but you forgot to mention the extra touch of power with the two free rake attacks after a pounce giving 5 whole attacks all at +2 with a simple charge. This is irrelevant, I just thought I should mention it for fun.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

we did it, and it turned out great but I'm worried about the bone golem encounter right after while half the team is unconscious or below half HP. . .

I plan on playing a wild shaping druid that can become a dire tiger and further utilize pounce and rake and I needed some answers/clarification.

I understand how rake works with pounce, but with a grab, it is confusing. Grab states that after maintaining it I get automatic damage then I can do any option a normal grappler could get then two free rake attacks. Does this mean a total of four damage sequences? or only 3 ( without special grapple action )?

example:

I grab with my bite attack ( great ),

next turn I successfully maintain it and get automatic bite damage, next I can do automatic damage with any light weapon or natural attack ( claw damage ) because I was able to maintain it as stated it grapple rules, then lastly I roll to hit for two claw attacks ( with grapple penalties, was it -2 to hit? )
or
automatic bite damage, no free claw damage because the bite damage was my free action ( or roll to hit? ) then two free rolled claw attacks.

I feel I'm almost to the stage of true rake enlightenment, but just one last push of clarification would be greatly appreciated.

the problem is that they are all knocked out but one, and Nazhena has almost no combat spells left unless I can switch out one her useless prepared spells for something better (for instance unshakable chill for chill touch). I think I will allow him to release the hut just to allow the campaign to continue.

I just DM'd the boss fight between the PC's and Queen Nazhena and I found it interesting that the players could push her into range allowing the hut to attack, though my players found an exploit (that I admittedly led them onto) which is just to simply touch the chain allowing free range of the hut to surely destroy everything in its path, though it seems the build-up of freeing the hut was not intended to be this way.
Should we count this as meta-gaming as I kind of told them they could touch the chains, should I just make her run (even though she is still max HP) or should I just allow it to teach myself a lesson of keeping my mouth shut.

One of my players wants to play the Kasatha race which has four arms and uses the multi-weapon fighting feat assuming he would gain 4 attacks during a full-round action.
This sounds reasonable to me but it makes me wonder why anyone playing a rogue would not choose this as TWf is just a heavily watered-down version of this.

I am trying to determine if this is fair as I can see the rogue on their team becoming quite jealous and I'm wondering whether I should just stick to the core races.

The sniping ability that comes with stealth says you can take -20 on stealth checks after sniping to maintain your hidden position.
Does that mean that someone can hide behind a rock (with high enough stealth) and just infinitely fire arrows from the same position without the enemy noticing?

This seems very unrealistic because a creature who was smart enough could tell after at least 3 snipes the general direction and even the position of where the arrow came from.

Does the -20 stack, can you only snipe once? I can't tell.

We decided that we shouldn’t create custom races. So we agreed to use the hobgoblin stats but use the race idea he made.

I am a new GM and everything has gone smoothly (we are doing reign of winter). Though one of my players who is playing a fire kineticist has decided that he can make a custom race that is close to max optimized for his class.

In my opinion, I don't think they should be allowed to do this. It ruins the roleplaying purposes of races for the reason of squeezing the most power out that you can.

Does anyone else agree, if not I'd like to hear some opinions.

thanks

(He also said that if he can't be a custom race he will be a hobgoblin, I was also wondering what the roleplaying relation downfalls would be if a PC was a hobgoblin)

I am creating a druid with a lion animal companion.
And at INT:3 a companion can learn any feat it is physically capable of doing,
I found the feat feral grace and was interested, but it had a prerequisite of weapon finesse.
Weapon finesse: you may use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls

As a lion which has much higher strength, I would want to have the weapon finesse feat so I get Feral Grace, although I don't want to switch my strength for dex.

Is it possible to have a feat like feral grace and just choose not to use it or do I have to use it?
