It looks really cool, and I was going to use it in my next session, but I wasn't able to add class levels to monsters. Did I miss something? If not, please add this to the list of feature requests!

<Sigh> ok, I'll stop complaining about the two useless feats. I guess it really does only narrow my choices by one per bonus feat. Truly Zen Archer is a great class. I'll stick with Dodge for 2nd, and at 6th (if I survive that long in my GM's hostile world) I'll take Improved Precise Shot (or maybe Mobility). Thanks all for the feedback!

cant you rapid shot+many shot+flurry+ki pool?

No, it explicitly says that flurry does not work with rapid shot and manyshot. So you can either spend the feats (rapid shot and manyshot) and have the following attacks at level 20: +13/+13/+8/+3

Or you can not spend the feats, just use your class abilities, and by spending a ki point for the extra attack get the following attacks at level 20: +18/+18/+18/+13/+13/+8/+8/+3, and have two extra feats to spend!

So, yeah Flurry + Ki Point >>>>>>> Rapid Shot + Manyshot

I completely agree. Was just having this conversation in another thread.

Hi, and thanks for your reply. Here's my issue:

1. Why would I (or you, or anyone) want to burn 2 feats to get a worse attack than one already granted by an innate ability? For that matter, how does Rapid/Many beats Flurry? Example:

At 6th level, if I took Manyshot as my bonus feat (after taking Rapid at 2nd), I would get a double attack at one target (manyshot), plus another attack (rapid shot) at a chosen target. Both rolls are at +2 (+4 BAB, -2 penalty per Rapid Shot). Sure one attack is double damage if it hits, but my chance to hit is decreased by 10%.

If instead I use Flurry, I get 3 attacks at target(s) of my choice, at +4, +4, +1. As I see it, compared to the archery feats, that's two attacks with standard chance of success, plus another attack with -15% chance to hit. As I progress in level, this difference is even greater, where Flurry gives me more attacks at a better bonus. How/when/where is Rapid/Many better than Flurry?

2. In terms of flavor, it's lame to nerf archery-based feats in an archery-based class? (I get it mechanically (e.g. overpowering), but not flavor-wise.

3. With these above two points in mind, the Zen Archer class could be improved by either a) offering a more usable selection of bonus feats, b) replacing Rapid/Many with special Zen Archer feats, or c) allowing Rapid Shot and Manyshot in a Flurry of Blows, but requiring higher prerequisites to use them.

My question remains: [i]Why would anyone choose these?[/] If my understanding of the rules is wrong here, please correct me with specific examples. The way I see it, Rapid/Many is not even in the same league as a bow Flurry. As it stands, I will definitely take other bonus feats.

6b Weapon Specialization (Longbow)
6b Manyshot

10b Improved Precise Shot
11 Improved Critical

So glad I found this thread, because I have a problem. I'm also playing a dwarf Zen Archer monk who just reached second level. Here's the problem:

Unless I'm missing something, Rapid Shot and Manyshot (two of the best feats for any archer class) are redundant with the Zen Archer's Flurry of Blows ("A zen archer cannot use Rapid Shot or Manyshot when making a flurry of blows with his bow." - PFAPG):

*Flurry of Blows* is a full-round attack that adds an extra attack at -1/-1 (from BAB at 2nd level.) Its attack bonus improves faster than the monk's standard attack (equals at lvl 5, surpasses at lvl 9), and is therefore the bread-and-butter of any monk class.
*Rapid Shot* is also a full-round attack that gives an extra attack, but at -2/-2. So, totally out of the question for Zen Archer.
*Manyshot* is another full-round attack, which is effectively the same as Flurry of Blows (at 2nd level anyway), only without as many targeting options. Again, out of the question for Zen Archer.

It seems like a mistake to say "A zen archer cannot use Rapid Shot or Manyshot when making a flurry of blows with his bow." If the feats stacked with the ability, it would make sense to burn a feat, but as it is I don't see any reason to burn a feat for an attack that is always going to be worse than my innate attack.

That said, if they stacked, I think the Zen Archer class could easily overpower the game (3 attacks at 2nd level). Without Rapid Shot and Manyshot, the Zen Archer bonus feat selection is seriously limited.

Am I missing something? Is there an errata on this? Is there some use for these two feats that I'm not seeing?

Oh, and if anyone cares, here is our campaign: http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/fallen-star

Thanks!

This adventure assumes the PCs are in attendance ... at the Swallowtail Festival on the first day of autumn in Sandpoint.

On the calendar, the first day of autumn is Sunday 1 Rova 4707. I would call this Day 1 of the campaign.

I am over 30, non-smoker in Los Angeles, looking to start or join a fun game. D&D is what I know, but I am open to playing other systems (Shadowrun, Vampire, whatever).

Bi-weekly or flexible schedule would be good. Daytimes are usually better than evenings, but somewhat flexible. Prefer the "West Side" (I am near USC).

So maybe to expand it a bit (I haven't yet read the new Pathfinder Gods book):

Abadar = St Cuthbert
Asmodeus = Hextor
Calistria = Olidammara (loosely)
Cayden Cailean = Corellon Larethian (loosely) or Olidammara
Desna = Fharlanghn
Erastil = Ehlonna (loosely) or Yondalla
Gorum = Kord
Gozreh = Obad-Hai
Iomedae = Heironeous
Irori = Boccob (loosely) or Kord
Lamashtu = Gruumsh
Nethys = Boccob (loosely)
Norgorber = Vecna
Pharasma = Wee Jas
Rovagug = Erythnul
Sarenrae = Pelor
Shelyn = Yondalla (loosely) or Corellon Larethian
Torag = Moradin
Urgathoa = Nerull
Zon-Kuthon = Hextor

Perfect ... just what I needed to know. Thanks!

Just to let you guys know, there's a mention in Guide to Darkmoon Vale that mentions the full moon in Arodus, 4707. I made sure the dates for that reference match what you did with the calendar. It turned out the original dates I put in were only a few days off, so GMTA! :D

So ... is the calendar in this thread the final one? Or is there a new one with slightly different dates and moon cycles? Thanks!!

I think that is because you're using acrobat reader, which doesn't allow changes to be saved. You'd have to get acrobat (the full version), or other programs that allow changing PDFs.

There are some form pdf's that are savable even in Acrobat Reader, like these character sheets:

http://www.penpaperpixel.org/downloadspage/ppnpplayercharactersheets.htm

Not to dredge up any recent trauma, but the IRS even has forms that you can save in Acrobat Reader! :)

I think there might be a Save/Export setting in Acrobat that lets Acrobat Reader users save their forms....

Anyway, the calendar is great either way.

Really cool calendar! Thanks for doing this.

One question. Mine says that I can't save what I type into it. Would it be possible to make us a savable version, or is there a trick to this that I don't know?

Hey all, I recently bought #1, Burnt Offerings, and have been running it online as a PBP. Don't have the other ones yet, but what a great adventure!

Beyond the quality, richness and originality in the work, James shows obvious dedication with his ubiquitous and patient participation on the messageboards. This personal touch, I'm sure, is one of the reasons Pathfinder has been so successful, and with such a great online community.

My only request is to make the messageboards a bit more organized. It's hard to find subjects, especially older posts. I'd really like to see a classic PHPBB-style forum, with categories, sub-categories, and where threads take a bit longer to disappear. It would also be awesome to have a "user-created resources" area of the web site, where we could find maps and handouts without having to dig through the threads.

In any event, keep up the amazing work! Thanks to everyone for all the maps, handouts, etc.

Sweet!

Thanks yoda, and what a kick-@$$ calendar!

Forgive me if this has been answered, but I searched the messageboards and didn't find anything definite on this.

I know that the campaign begins on the First Day of Autumn, in the year 4707 AR. But what is the first day of autumn? The 21st of Rova? Also, what day of the week is it?

For the detail oriented, can we get a definitive ruling on EXACTLY when the campaign starts?

a) the day of the year
b) the day of the week

Thanks!

I'd have to agree with Selk. Any PC's that burn crops and manipulate markets are asking for Her Majesty's Royal Noose, if they don't get a pitchfork through the gut first.

Magical Medieval Society, from Expeditious Retreat Press, is a great source for questions like these.

I agree that Cintra has the best advice here. Even if the characters are evil or reticent, there has to be an element of player cooperation. I once played a character, in a heavily story-based game, who had a VERY low charisma score. To role-play this, I made him smelly, disagreeable, and ill-mannered. Basically, he had no social skills, and was always putting his foot in his mouth. This made him a very funny character, and led to some interesting and fun situations between the characters and NPC's. The problem was that after a few months I (and everyone else) started to hate this character. Though he was a powerful wizard, essential to the party's survival, nobody liked him. He always said the wrong things at the wrong time. I wasn't trying to thwart the DM -- I was correctly role-playing a well developed character -- but he had taken on a life of his own. I couldn't control him anymore, and he was ruining the game for everyone. My DM took me aside (like Cintra suggests), and we agreed to turn him into an NPC. Rolling up a new character was a huge relief!

That said, here's my 2cp. As a DM, I like to establish early on with my players that I'm using both game mechanics and story mechanics.

For example, during the first goblin raid, the PC's were fighting the set encounters, rolling dice to hit, etc. (game mechanics). I was also describing that all around them, members of the militia were engaged in their own battles against other goblins. Call me lazy, but I'm not going to set up a big spreadsheet with every militia member and every goblin, rolling dice each round to determine the tide of battle. But Sandpoint has a militia ... what are they doing? This is where story mechanics come in.

Another strategy is to move the "railroad tracks" under their feet. Your players refuse to hunt goblins? Have the goblins hunt them, until all of Thistletop comes to Sandpoint. They want to give everyone in Sandpoint swords so they don't have to help? Okay, how fast can the smithy make swords? Just fast enough so that there is always ONE gang of goblins that attacks the PC's directly! They decide to leave Sandpoint and go to a different part of the continent? Along the way, they stumble right into the middle of a goblin outpost (that happens to look a lot like Thistletop).

I realize that none of these suggestions make a bit of difference if the players are trying to derail the story. Best of luck!

I would appreciate the battle maps as well, please! lectric (at) scn (dot) org
