Is there a potential new source for mooks? They know the town in and out, they keep a constant watch over the town with invisible imps, and several of the cultists they had as mooks were taken from this town one way or another. The PC's, having realized they were dealing with actual devils, immediately sent out a call for help to a prominent npc in the capital city of the region. During the fighting with the devils mooks the npc teleported in a few npc's and some soldiers to help secure the town and investigate what was going on. As for a new source for mooks, that's a good question. after viewing the responses and help on this thread I'm realizing I need to work out background and support for this one shot adventure I made.
oops, like I said fledgling dm. I'm going to start from the top and work my way down the chain for this operation. I'm thinking that the head of this operation will be a middle ranked devil of some sort, working on a operation for a pit fiend to try and secure power, territory and more souls I guess. so this wont be a make it or break it operation, but ultimately they will both want it to succeed, both for the gaining of territory plunder and power, but to keep from ruining their reputation by having a operation ruined by some "mere mortals".
And I agree with HowFortuitous about them thinking they need to strike back and hearing the advice, I do believe I'm going to have more mooks and fodder attack the town, after I figure out how many and of what to attack with.
Terquem, I agree and you are correct, and I tend to try to leave chaos theory and personal issues some play with the bad guys. With this particular enemy though I want this to be a difficult fight and besides remaining thematically appropriate I want them making decisions that make sence and work the best for them, cause with this group of PC's making a dumb mistake Is a great way to get a encounter chewed up like it was much lower cr's.
Mark Hoover , that is a excellent Idea, I have just the set of npc,s to use for manipulation in these regards and it could work out beautifully, and I will look into implementing a scenario like that into this game.
These have been some great ideas. thanks for the help guys and giving me a place to flesh out ideas.
One of the players has a lot of experience gaming, the others are rather new. And I like the idea of attacking them but the players have killed off most of the mooks that were prepping for the attack on the town and the players are likely to rest in town. so to do more than feed a few low level guards to a grinder that will likely do nothing, the devils will have to attack themselves, and they could do a lot of damage to the town but with a walled town, prepped defenders (thanks to players warning town of the dangers, equiping and improving the defenses) and even unrested pc's it will be certain suicide.
I suppose I could have the devils teleport and attack the pc's on terrain in their favor when the pc's start to fall back to the town.
The devils are the scouts/spearhead of a bid by higher ranking devils to gain a foot hold on the material plane for conquest, the cultists just being human lackeys and expendable conscripts for thier ultimate goals. Their plan was to attack and capture the town nearby as a forward operating base.
Being highly intelligent I doubt they would risk the operation for the sake of ruins that can be abandoned and start elsewhere. But that leaves the question, do they just abandon the complex and the adventurers that destroyed their plan and start anew elsewhere? Or would they try anything to exact revenge? And how would they go about this?
So in the adventure I'm running my players are most of the way through assaulting the ruins of a small castle that some devils and their cult worshippers have set up near a small town. The PC's just used up a some resources and one of their number was dropped to zero defeating a mid level boss and henchman. After we stopped game some of the players talked about falling back to the town to rest and re-equip to deal with the formidable enemy that still likely lies within.
So my question is, the devil leaders aren't stupid, so how should they react? Obviously sitting and waiting would be a stupid idea. Would they summon more help and assault the town, ambush them on thier return trip, leave and find somewhere else to setup?
The party consists of five players and a npc. Totalling two rogue's, a cleric, a ranger, a fighter and a sorcerer. The enemy's left to fight them are two erinyes, a bearded devil, and a few peon cultists and cleric cultist.
Any advice would be awesome. Thanks.

You could always say you used the rules presented in UC to rebuild the character to replace unwanted feats. These are great ideas. I think I might end up using these. I didn't even think about the familiar feats. Thank you
For my game I'm making a 8th level adept as the towns mysterious aged holyman for the pc's to interact with and who will help defend the town when it is attacked. What feats would be best for a npc adept both storywise and combat wise? Back story is he tried to be a adventurer but couldn't cut it, but found he wanted to make a pilgrimage around the world and ended up settling in this backwater town as his age became to great to continue traveling and his heart told him this is where he should be. He's had to defend himself but is also not entirely violence oriented. Any help is appreciated.
I would think adding bane undead to a holy intelligent weapon that has run afoul of a lich or two would be appropriate.
So then the question is how eager a good aligned intelligent weapon would be to increase its power to do good and fulfill its purpose?
So i have a intelligent sword, found and rolled up randomly, that i would like to add the bane special weaopns property to. Now the stats of the sword as a weapon itself leave it with lots of room to add onto before it gets near to being a +10 weapon (its a +2 holy longsword) but being a sentient item it has its own powers and purpose. So the question is, is it allowed to add on to the sentient weapon by the rules (provided the sentient weapon allows this)
Using the feral dragon template on a adult bronze dragon yeilds to me a dragon with modified cr of 8 with six attacks:
bite +24 (2d8+12), 2 claws +24 (2d6+8),
2 wings +22 (1d8+4), tail slap +22 (2d6+12)
nothing even in the cr of 10 has attacks of that high to hit. And that doesnt even take in its over 200 hp. I know the dragon loses alot of its power when it loses its magic abilities and immunities, but my question is thus: is this too powerfull a creature to give it a cr of only 8?
thanks

Maybe he had a reduce person cast on him in a place that strongly resonates with transmutaion magic or in a wild magic zone or was cursed/blessed by a fey or whatever. Might even make for a nice plothook to help him find a cure. Thats not a bad idea. I might use that theme as a plot line later. I ask though as pc's are attempting to make this npc that size. I didn't how to make a fine size pc or the like so as to avoid attempts to make a playable fine size pc.
How would one go about trying to make a npc go from a standard medium size race, ie: human, dwarf or elf, into a fine size(four inch tall) human dwarf or elf?
The spell reduce person only allows one size change and doesn't stack with other forms, and polymorph acts as reduce person on humanoids.
Polymorph any object leaves more room to interpretation and i think would allow this to happen, but is a high level spell and would make said person permanently that size.
Are there any easier and less permanent ways to reduce size to fine than a 8th level spell?
Im seeking a clarification on the dominate ability of vampire spawn: say there is four vampire spawn that ambush and attempt to dominate a single pc, does that pc make four seperate will saves? And if so, if a save succeeds does that mean they cant be affected by that ability for the rest of the encounter/day? From just that vamp spawn or all?
thanks for the input.
Is there any rules for adjusting the combat style feats to allow a PC to use them with weapons?
Such as a two weapon fighter using the crane style
Or are there other combat style feats made for weapon users? I know i could houserule this but if there are rules i'd love to see them. If not, suggestions on houserules?
I would love to see some combat style feats that include the use of weapons.
like the crane style here but usable by a guy wielding swords.

However it would still take the ACP and all on its skills and attacks since its most likely not proficient with medium armor.
-2 ACP non-proficent aint so bad for the added protection Now my question becomes: as the armor rules for mithral state, mithral reduces the armor check penalty by 3, making breast plate only -1 to your armor. but it is also listed under masterwork that MW reduces ACP by 1. would that make it a 0 ACP or is the MW ACP included in the 3 reduction in the mithral entry?
Ok so my question is: since a flying creature cant fly while wearing medium armor, can it if its wearing mithral armor since it says armors made with mithral count as light for purposes of movement and other limitations. Such as take a giant eagle, could he fly if i put mithral breast plate on it?
So my question involves the loot at the end of the adventure, its complicated by the fact i have allowed one of my characters to be a centaur. The adventure works great for the plot with his character but im not sure what to do about the armor loot. its half a chain shirt half chain mail, what should i rule it as? and what should i play it as in comparison to his mithril chain shirt he has?
The rason the levels are so different is we had decided to combine two different games' characters, as well as letting two new characters being made, and we have had a tradition of having someone with a new character make them either 1st level or two levels lower than the next lowest lvl playe. It has made games very interesting and fun. And so far it has been a blessing playing without him. But i never considered there being a problem cause i had played with his character from first level and he had never done anything evil before. But alas i was wrong

As far as i know and the best explanations i've gotten out of him is that his IC and OoC reasons are the same, something along the lines of: "my character hates dragons and i don't know him, and it doesn't matter what spell he put on me, it was directed at me from what for all i know is a evil dragon in our midst."
I was personally convinced that he just did not like my brother, because my brother is a bit odd and can be annoying, but as annoying as he is its all in fun cause its a game. I have gone and done things to get back at his characters for being annoying, but being good aligned they were all non lethal or pranks. But when i confronted my friend he swore up and down that it wasn't any personal feelings over my brother.
So if i take him at his word it was what he perceived as the appropriate actions to a "attack" on him by a hated creature. I have recently come to blame his other gaming group he has been playing with, they play new world of darkness and nwod doesn't use alignment. They just seem to use world views and perception. But i never played and dont know.
And our conversation/argument ended with "well fine then im leaving and not playing this character ever again."

So, not too long ago i had a game session with my friends and older brother, all was going well until tragedy struck and one pc (my friend) up and murdered another pc (my brother) with little warning. Now inevitably the game devolved into a arguing match of "wtf" both in and out of game and both the murderer's character and the player left in a huff. I'm posting this cause i can't wrap my head around the situation and figured some of you would find the story entertaining and would have some comments on the situation.
So here are the details: the party consisted of five adventurers all of good alignment, a mute human female monk 10th lvl about 4 ft tall, a saytre bard 7th lvl, a human restless soul ranger 11th lvl (me), a halfelf sorcerer with gold dragon bloodline lvl 7(the murdered), and a human barbarian duskblade 9th lvl (the murderer) The barbarian is just smart enough to get away being a duskblade, but the story behind him gets slightly complicated as follows: his tribe worshipped thor, and in the storyline we had thor had died, and to keep the people from going insane, the shamans of his tribe turned to arcane power to hide their lost divine powers. They had managed to keep up this charade for quite some time, and when arcane leanings were discovered in the barbarian they took him under their tutelage and taught him more powers, and told him he was gifted by the gods, and somewhere along the line, he came to believe he was the reincarnation of thor who was not yet dead, and through some adventuring hated dragons.
Now the encounter goes as such. Our party of monk, ranger and barbarian comes to the rescue of a caravan being escorted by the bard and the sorcerer, standard save the day and party hook up after final escort to town, sorcerer shows off his fire breath to impress the party. On our way to the next encounter up in the mountains at a monastery, the barbarian decided to have some fun and puts dancing lights around the rangers head as a prank which gathers hilarity from reaction, the sorcerer seeing good fun to be had, uses drench to get the barbarian wet.
And this is the fateful moment, the barbarian, hearing the casting of the wicked dragon like creature and then getting soaked turns with out any warning and throws his powerfully enchanted warhammer at the sorcerer using the lightning spell stored in the weapon, hits, crits and rolls max damage on weapon and high damage on spell flat out killing the sorcerer in one hit. Now i know that im a bit biased by the fact it was my brother that was murdered by what i think was a lousy reason so i figured i would ask: was there a bit of over reaction on the barbarian? Or was he justified murdering as he did. And how the hell do you keep from having a in party feud or fight? We haven't gamed since as a group.
How about a arachnid warrior bug, like from the movie starship troopers. Thinking between cr 2 and 5 maybe?

Half brass half bronze anyone?

I know this isn't quite on topic for a options book, but i have really been needing a good airship book. something that gives some examples of ships, but also has good rules for creating your own from scratch, both magical, and non. there have been a few airship books out, and so far none have had the right feel, or given near what i wanted, between them they get it all, but the rules for each don't work together.
And as for the book that i would like for free, it would be the ultimate options grit and gunslingers.
Ok, thank you for the comments. I am looking at the ironborn book now and it is very interesting, thank you. To clarify more, however, i am not looking to make a PC character, i am looking to make a Golem like construct that requires no magic to act cause he is clockwork and or steam powered. I am not looking to make a cohort or companion, just a battle field weapon. And the inspiration for this is this:
rise of legends video The clock work man makes his entrance at 1:02
I have reviewed most existing material from 3.5 and pathfinder and have found none that as yet fit what i am looking for because the clockwork golem (though cool and nasty) is not the style or feel that i am looking for. I intend to intoduce this as something made in a Alkenstar like area of my world. So i am starting from scratch and am looking to braistorm ideas here.
I have always loved steampunk style games, and after the gunslinger addition to pathfinder, i want to see about making a clockwork man(similar to the vinci clockwork man from rise of legends) construct. With, hopefully, as little to no magic as possible, since it runs off clockwork(and or steampower). What ideas does anyone have on its stats, damage, hp and how to construct it ect. ect. ?
