I am messaging you directly with this one, as its fairly lengthy and would require more back-and-forth between you and me to make it successful.
I saw the Monk Vows and thought that they looked like a fun thing to use and to try to incorporate into my character, however they also seem to need some pretty serious discussion between the player and the GM on their expectations around them.
What do you think of these?
The 3 main ones I was looking at are the Vow of Poverty, Vow of Fasting and Vow of Chains.
The Vow of Poverty is a big one. I basically get almost no equipment in exchange for a boatload of Ki. Now, the only reason I would even consider taking this is because I have really strong stats (18,16,16,15,13,11) and I would be building a rather powerful character (Grappling Monks CAN be overkill if I am not careful >_> ). The thought then is that the loss of most of my equipment could be acceptable but I would have to create a character that could REALLY make use of that Ki to cover the shortfalls from this Vow.
As for the Vow itself, I guess I would basically be giving everything I collect to someone else in the party. Also, since I cannot actually amass wealth, I cannot actually buy anything for my 1 allowed item and would have to rely on you providing it somehow some other way, maybe me stealing it or something. (it puts extra thought requirement on you.) And then there's this line;
Vow of Poverty wrote:
He cannot borrow or carry wealth or items worth more than 50 gp that belong to others.
Now, we are bad guys and chances are that the group will want to steal something. In such a case, will stealing something from someone and giving it to a party member count as carrying the wealth of others? If needed, I can always just put myself in a position or role where I do not have to handle the goods directly and solve it that way. Like a Paladins Code, I just want to make sure I understand up front what is expected of me if I take this :)
So, you think we can make it work?
Ya, the current idea that I am feeling out is to create a Human Monk with just the Monk Vows as the base, and taking Master of Many Styles as my free archetype.
Then I will aim to "collect" many different fighting styles over time, and swapping between them each round in a kind of dance. He will only have the base level of Style feats but he will have a few of them. This way I will have built in a fairly wide move pool with different options available to me instead of a bunch of stacking bonuses. A large limiting factor to this will be my Swift actions, as just about EVERYTHING I would do will take a Swift :)
Entering a Style (including on the first round) is a Swift action, changing or adding another Style is also a Swift, Ki powers are (usually) Swift actions as well, such as +1 attack or +4 Dodge, and also some feats (if I decide to take them) such as Stunning Pin or Panther Style also take Swift actions, so they are exclusive to each other. However, this does mean I will have a rather graceful fighter utilizing a mirad of different blows.
I do have some really decent stats, coupled with a generally powerful class (Monk MoMS) so I figure I probably don't really need to boost my direct power too much :/ Focus on killing mooks creatively instead! XD
That and I also plan on taking some Monk Vows which can also be a form of limiter as well, but mostly I just really like the flavor of them :) I will soon be sending a pm to you Jing regarding them, as I do need to discuss them with you.
As for the Scaled Fist archetype, it is a pretty great one but not really what I am looking for :( That one bases everything off of Charisma but I am envisioning a more imposing specimen with a towering and unflinching will who is very self-disciplined and driven. He is single-minded and irresistible in his pursuit of his martial arts

Hi! :)
I have currently been working on creating my twin Goblins submission for your On the Dying Sea campaign but I seem to have hit a bit of a creative slump :(
So I am looking at potentially changing my submission into that of a Monk but I have some questions about him that I would need to ask and address with you first :(
Its fairly lengthily so I figured I would ask you in a private message and then post the short version on the Recruitment thread itself.
His basic concept is 2-fold (and at the moment I am largely just working on his crunch, I got a jumble of his fluff up in my head but I havn't gotten that far yet :p), he should be an Unchained Master of Many Styles with ideally a couple of the first rank Style feats and then get a lot of usage out of the MoMS's Wildcard feat. Hopefully I will have a really wide range of options that I can then swap back and forth from to make his combat a lot more exciting then just saying "I power attack it with my sword."
Fluff wise, he would be a great Martial Artist who knows many different fighting styles and moves, and whos form is almost dancelike in its graceful twists, turns and thrusts. So one round I will use the Crane Style where I am deftly dodging around then the next moment (round) I switch to a more aggressive stance and strike a stunning blow at a targets vulnerabilities using Mantis Style. That kind of idea. (Also I think that having many different styles will hopefully pull him away from having a bunch of stacking abilities that create Really High Numbers, and instead widen him out a bit)
But I need to discuss his second main concept. I really want to take some of the Monk Vows as I think they are really neat and I really want to create a very Ki empowered Monk. The 2 I was thinking of specifically were Vow of Poverty and Vow of Fasting. Using these, I intend to create a very acetic practitioner of Ki and Arts. He eschews many of the luxuries and trappings of society as he feels they distract and drag him away from his "Pure" path.
Vow of Poverty is the first one, and its a biggie :/
Basically I give up all but 1 magic item and instead get 1 extra Ki per level (8 total), so that means that I have to be able to handle the loss of whatever my wealth would have given me by using that Ki, and I think I could do it :)
The main question tho is Automatic Bonus Progression. How would you rule that interacts? While it would be awesome to get the inherent stats of ABP while holding no wealth and still gain full Ki from Vow of Poverty, that might go against its intent. I dunno :/ What do you think and how would you rule it?
Also, there is the line: "He cannot borrow or carry wealth or items worth more than 50 gp that belong to others."
Now, we are an evil group. Chances are that someone is going to want to steal something :p Just so that I am clear on expectations on this part, if the group decides to steal something, or do something of the sort, and I join in (cuz we are a party), I assume I can't take/steal something and give it to another party member. I have eschewed all attachments to worldly possessions and so carrying around something valuable, even if its stolen and even if I intend to hand it off right away is straying too close to that worldly trapping of greed. After all, what if something unexpected happens and I get stuck carrying it?
No, what I would have to do is that whatever part of the plan I am in, I simply take on roles that don't require me to handle any valuables, instead I could do things like running a distraction or taking out the guards as a few examples.
HOWEVER that does not mean I can't be shrewd about it >:) you know the saying "Take care of your friends and they will take care of you." ?
There is nothing that says that I couldn't promise someone my share of the loot in exchange for free lodgings and accomidations, or for information or somesuch.
Also, I intend to take the Augury Qinggong power and call it my intuition. I would intend to use it often as a preemptive check if I fear that an action of mine might violate my Vows or personal ethics. Should be fun :)
I also want to take the
Hia :) I am a bit late to the party but I would love to take the chance to throw my hat into the ring.
Since I saw that SoP were available I decided to dive into those sources to look for concept ideas, and I found the Shifting Disguise feat, which gives me the supernatrual ability to shift my appearance and mimic others and it immediately made me think of Tonks from the Harry Potter books. Tonks was born a Metamorphmagus which means she can change her physical appearance at will and innately without needing to use something like a polyjuice potion or a wand. There are some limitations on it and Tonks often simply used it to change the color of her hair or the shape of her nose. :p
So I thought that would be cool to base a character around and started planning some kind of shapeshifter :) Now as time goes on, she is becoming less and less like Tonks and turning more and more into a character with abilities akin to Mystique's from the Marvel Universe, she has a knack for mimicking other people and impersonation which is a lot more prominent then I was first anticipating.
Now, I am still very early on in the creation phase, so I have very little backstory or fluff written up yet. Initially I am going to focus on getting the core crunch concept down so that I can then use that to guide my writing and write fluff/backstory that matches and incorporates aspects of his abilities :)
If your going to build a Metamorphmagus, then go whole hog and build a Shifter!
Ya, she will be a Human (90% sure) 2nd level Shifter. The Shifter class will give her some significant Alteration focused ability; Full CL for Alteration effects and casting and maintaining Alterations as a move action. (She will also gain the Bestial Trait: Shape Weapon which would allow her to change an arm into a weapon, which will be her combat ability).
She also gets Wild Empathy, so I will make her an animal lover :3
Note: She will have the Unorthodox Casting trait keyed to Charisma, so all of her abilities will be keyed off of Charisma. This means she will be stronger at things like Diplomacy, Bluff, Disguise or Wild Empathy. She is a young girl with the ability to change her appearance at will, she is going to be pretty!
She has the Doppelganger-spawn racial trait replacing her bonus feat, which is great for her as I can build off that to explain why she has such strong and inborn morphic powers.
Actually. I might have another really interesting idea to persue :)
It involves being that outsider guy who uses those very unrelable magics.
I realized the Cerebremancer prestige class basically combines a traditional spellcaster and a psionic one, which gave me the idea.
Initially my character was from the surface down below, and he was a mage to boot. I joined up with an expedition led by a higher class mage (who could actually get us up there) with the intent of exploring/studying/trading/something the great floating rocks in the sky. A big accident ensues or maybe a fight with clan Resalia breaks out and everyone in my party except me dies. And now I am stranded. On a giant floating rock. Where everyone flies. Except me. But at least I have got magic! Except its a wild warp zone... Frak. Maybe I could wait for rescue? [Ooc](Nope. Everyone thinks
