I still want to say that you can't take it till 5th level because of the way other things work the same way. But it is odd that the dosent specificly say "Must be 5th level to take this evolution" like all the others...

We can all agree that it is worded poorly at best.

I've actually been play testing and gone a different route. My group is at level 3 and I'm playing a gnome summoner. My Eidolon is a quadruped and his evolutions are:Claws, improved natural armour, pounce, improved damage bite, and reach bite. For feats he has power attack and dodge. This all gives him an AC of 19, touch 19, and flat footed 16 for a great start to a tank and when I cast Mage armour and shield, oh boy oh boy tankage...oh and I ride him into combat usually as being quadruped I can :).

The way that my group and I read the rules, is that a Eilolon can't take improved natural armor until level 5.
