IMO it's a game breaker particularly at low levels where a creative PC could acquirie undead things like a Vampire at first or second level or a Shadow with a Shadow army.

Except that the rule doesn't say by what means the necromancer can control them. There must be some kind of check for taking over undead you didn't make, a check which would have make taking over a vampire difficult.

Okay, you get to control 8 HD worth of undead per caster level, but how? There's no mechanic given for putting this into effect.

That refers to the Control Pool you get when casting animate dead and similar spells which count against your control pool like ghoul gauntlet. The Control Pool is normally 4 HD per level, and Dread Necromancers have a much larger one.

Also note that all the undead you create with one casting are controlled whether they fit into the control pool or not. So Clerics with the Deathbound domain have an effective Control Pool of 6HD/level, provided that they make all of it with one casting.

Well, then that makes the ability useless until the necromancer reaches what, 5th or 7th level?

I started a thread on this before realizing this one was here.

Another problem is that the rule doesn't say how the necromancer gets to control them. Is there some kind of check? Is it automatic? Do you just get to grab the undead as you come across them?

Speaking of Rangers, I noticed that Track has been subsumed into something else or othewrwise done away with. I have to wonder what will be added to compensate for the loss of a signature class ability.
