Added discussion thread for Goblinworks Blog: Butchers, Bakers and Candlestick Makers.

Finally something for me.

I want to be a professional merchant/crafter. That to me is way way more important than combat. As a result I'm finding it really hard to find an MMO that I like. Whilst I'm not mad on the Cut-throat nature of eve, I'm willing to look at this game purely for its Crafting and buildings ecosystem.

I'm wathching this blog even more closely now than I was before

Hopefully we'll be a bit faster than that. :) The design assumes a median character density of 100 logged in characters per Hex. Once we hit our stride I expect we'll be adding Hexes on a very regular schedule.

The Crusader Road area is 11 miles by 12 miles. A Hex is approximately 1.2km/1.2km.

100 logged in players per hex is a very interesting model. With Eve you were able to just scale up by adding hexes (space - the infinite map...) With the Kingdoms it's somewhat - odd - to have the "world" just keep expanding.

Also raises interesting thoughts on how many hexes make up an "instance" per server. I'm going to assume not 1 hex/instance. And then you get into how the "intances" interact - is going from one instance to the next a hard jump (easier) or can players "travel" ad nauseum (hard). A lot of this depends upon what the underlying engine supports, of course.

I like the ever expanding hex idea. It's like the new world view where discovery is ever expanding our world view. very interesting.

Regarding an MMorpg Engine, have you looked at HeroEngine:
