I also spent/waste a lot of time moving stats to additional pages for encounters to make sure that I can find them quickly during encounters. I would love to see separate stats in the back for ease of not only finding them, but keeping them together in the correct tier.

:) Shisumo, you got luckier than you realized. You don't "shake off" a negative energy hit. You suck it up, no saving throw. The GM didn't know this, so you guys were fortunate. The saving throw listed is against the negative energy level becoming *permanent* 24 hours later, unless you get a restoration.

As the GM who ran the mod, you're right, I didn't know that. It was the second mod I have ever GMed and I spent WAY too much time trying to find things in books before I started to run it in my opinion. But truthfully, I probably would have let them save anyway.

When I read the mod, I thought to myself, crap this could be a TPK. Most of the group (including my character) wouldn't be able to hit Harkus on less than a natural 20. And personally, I don't find killing characters or being killed fun. Nor do I as a player like to be thrown up against characters that I have little or no hope of winning against.

From the 3.5 D&D FAQ:

Is there any saving throw to resist the negative level
applied by the energy drain attack of a vampire or other
undead creature?
Typically no. In most cases where a creature has an energy
drain attack, the negative levels are automatically applied. The
save occurs 24 hours later, determining whether the negative
level results in a permanent level loss.

Where did you find this? I was going off of something in the MM that I had about 30 seconds to skim as I was GMing, something like this could be handy when I am trying to prep.

Maybe I misunderstood it the way you told the story, but it sounds like your GM allowed you a save when you got hit to avoid the negative level. There's no save, you gain the level and that's why vampires are so feared. You take enough and you're hosed the rest of the scenario.

It was really that I didn't know, but I would have probably let them have it anyway. Harkus was wiping the floor with them as was.

Can I balance more than one jinn at a time? And for how long?

Spellcasting is quite similar for sahir vis a vis shugenja (Ring/School Rank and so on - though there are no Affinities/Deficiencies, and all spells just take a single action to cast automatically), but summoning jinn is a much more involved process than calling on the kami. For most people, it's a 6 hour long ritual - but the jinn can be tasked to serve for as much as a month, potentially, and a skilled summoner can get fairly specific in the powers and abilities of the jinn being called. (It's also possible to learn a special version of the rite that makes it a bit faster and easier, though it's still not a combat-speed action.)[/]

So think of it more like Exalted, something that you have set up in advance rather than something you can use on the fly.

It makes sense that the Ra'shari are into blessings and curses. How is healing going to work in this scenario? I keep thinking we need a cleric!

The Dahabi have an entire House dedicated to magic, and in general view magic in a very specific light: its ability to aid in their economic efforts. One particular thing about their magical practice is interesting: as dedicated bargainers, they have a very effective method for cutting deals with jinn.

I like this.

I also like the idea of the Ebonites as well. Though to save you the extra work, I could easily choose from the other options.

(moving over from email to the thread as requested)

I'm still trying to figure out where I want to fall in the categories of backgrounds. I'm thinking "reclaiming your roots" or "Seeking Haleem".

Perhaps I should focus on Jinn summoning. Something I have always resisted in the past. I'll need to know about about the sahir (is that right?)or will this work like summoning kami does? Are there schools for magic users?

As far as factions/sects go….

Hmm, well, the Qabal, might be logical, however the Assassins, Dahabi, Ebonites and Ra'shari sound more interesting.

heh. It's like a shujenja.. ;)

Hee hee, oh its like that is it? Alright, bring on the shujenja-ness!

I'll volunteer to play the sahir (uh, if you tell me what it is exactly!)

I'll have to second Del from Roberson's Sword Dancer books. I would also add Kit (The Blue Lady)from the Dragonlance books (on my mind at the moment because I'm listening to a dragonlance novel during my commute at the moment). Hmm.

How about Jiana from Heroing by Daffyd ab Hugh? I loved her.

For a science fiction one, I like Elizabeth Bear's Jenny Casey.
