Hey, everyone. Still here, just shifting gears back to standard elven subraces. I'll try to post something soon. In the meantime keep the conversation going. Character, type of game, etc. Thanks

@william Nightmoon Having only half the normal darkvision of a drow makes sense. We could lessen the light blindness to a save to balance this out. Also I'm a little wary of spell resistance, but let's see how it compares with the other races.

@Vetus Relator Sounds good. Thanks for doing all this setup! Feel free to PM me anything you think would be for DM eyes only. I'll start incorporating these races into the campaign.

@Ammon Knight of Ragathiel Agreed game balance is key. As long as we're all having fun then it's all good.

Hey, everyone. Lots of good discussion! I'll try to cover everything here, but let me know if I missed you. Sorry if it still feels in flux. It is. I like the collaboration, though. Let's keep the ideas flowing and once everything is settled we can start a fresh thread and of course all of you will be given priority.

Character builds

Classes
By default I'm allowing all the core and base classes, except gunslinger. And summoner seems a bit broken, but if you want to play one we can make sure it's balanced with everyone else. I'm not as familiar with the hybrid classes, but I like the idea of them. Again let's make sure everything is balanced.

Races
I like the options Vetus Relator has been creating. If you'd like to make some elven race options that are comparable that would be great. william Nightmoon I'm still deciding on drow, but maybe we could have a rare half-drow race. There would be discrimination, though.

@Vetus Relator I'm wary of racial abilities that step on the toes of class abilities like rage and favored enemy. Also to me Strength bonuses are weighted more than other stats since it affect attacks and damage. Maybe just one race option with +2 Strength.

Evil Characters
I think this leads to interparty conflict which can be interesting, but also problematic. I think everyone would have to have clear goals of why they are adventuring together. Or we could do something like Lost and see where it takes us. Could end up splitting into teams which could be interesting or evil characters are shunned. Let me know your thoughts.

Spheres of Power
This sounds interesting. Vancian magic definitely is far from perfect and forces characters into certain roles. I'm open to having these side by side and seeing how it balances out.

Campaign
I'm seeing the campaign as being being a bit more wild and on the fringes. I may shrink Threshold's size. I definitely like the exploratory angle. Maybe something like the show Terra Nova.

As far as character options the aiudara "elf gates" allow for travel across the planet, so people could be from far flung parts of the continent.

@Gnomezrule That sounds like a great idea. Definitely would want to keep this to a minimum, so there would probably only be one PC from Golarion.

@Vetus Relator Lots of interesting ideas here, but as Green Smashomancer said I want to make sure these are balanced with other races and keep elf as a viable choice.

I'll have to look at these more closely, but after my first pass I'd say I'd like to avoid true flight, and limit energy resistances to one energy type at 5 and no improved energy resistance at 10.

Was there one in particular you were thinking of playing? Anyone else considering these?

@Green Smashomancer I'm not familiar with Spheres of Power, but I'll take a look.

I'm think four or five players for this and I'll give priority to people who showed interest first, but I'll ultimately decide on character. I'm more concerned with story than stats at this point.

@Vetus Relator Thanks for doing these! I'll take a look and get back to you.

As far as max level, I'm planning for 10. For me the rules seem to break down at higher levels and campaigns become more about planar travel.

@"Sunny" Yes Castrovel is where the elves retreated from Golarion and returned from most recently, but...

Elves of Threshold
This elven city is dominated by a dormant elfgate that once connected to the jungles of the Mwangi Expanse on Golarion.

Here's some NPCs I'm working up in leadership positions. May spark some ideas. You could also tie your backgrounds into these.

Threshold (Large City)

Chancellor of the Chantry
- Savage elf, recently elected
- Short woman
- Runs things with an iron fist, but looks out for her people

Precept
- Tower Elf
- Short, "yes man"

Warden of Alchemical Studies
- Tower elf
- Paranoid, pushy

Warden of Visions and Divination
- Snow elf
- Face reconstructed after scarring/burning

Warden of the Natural World
- Golarion elf, transferred because of superior record
- Youngest warden
- Leads a team of all women
- Lives alone with pets

Warden of Mental Perfection
- Half-elf, Tower elf father, Lashunta mother
- Very exacting, but also friendly

Ombudsman
- Large Snow elf (giant blood)
- Particular about what others "should" be doing
- Anger/anxiety issues
- Used to work for Warden of the Natural World

Warden of Physical Perfection
- Recently replaced and unannounced
- Trains off site

Warden of Crafting
- Vacant, savage elf that left
- Run by younger assistant left behind

Thanks, everyone! Definitely looks like there's interest. I like to build the campaign around the characters, but I'll definitely cannibilise some adventures. I'd like to avoid an AP people have played before, so I may just cherry pick things.

Character Build @rungok That sounds good. Half-elf also works and possibly reskins of other races.

Here's a link to the wiki page for Castrovel:
http://pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Castrovel

I'll get back to you with more specifics, but I'd like to hear what kind of campaign you'd like to play. And ideas are welcome.

@"Sunny" I'm thinking everyone would be natives, but I'm flexible.

@Vetus Relator Sounds great! Let me know what you come up with.

Oops, Castrovel is actually the name of the elven homeworld which is what I meant. Kyonin is the elven nation on Golarion.

@Burnscar Yeah I was thinking there would be ironwood versions of a lot of metal weapons, especially the favored elven weapons. They wouldn't do slashing damage, but piercing weapons would still do piercing damage.

That being said, elves here may have a different culture being estranged for so long.

@rungok I'm not familiar with the occult classes, but I'll take a look at get back to you.

Hey, everyone. Posting to gauge interest. I'd like to run a campaign set on the elven homeworld of Kyonin. The added twist is the atmosphere is abrasive to metals, so only non-metal weapons, equipment, armor, etc. would be available. There maybe some ironwood versions of weapons available, but nothing would do slashing damage. Of course there are legends of fabled starmetal and some others, like cold iron, buried deep underground.

I'm thinking the population is primarily elven, if not nearly completely elven, but if you have ideas for a character of another race let me know. Otherwise we can get into elven sub-races, maybe half-elves, etc. Even thinking we could reskin halflings as aelflings.

Okay, let me know who'd be interested. And any character ideas that pop into your head. Thanks.

Oh and we can get a consensus on posting. In the past I've done once/day on weekdays and take weekends off which seems to work out well.

Lydia Kaplow wrote:
Phillip, since we are the same age perhaps we had a class or two together in high school. Maybe you helped Lydia out with Math or Physics and she helped keep your car running?

Sounds good. His old white Camaro definitely needs it's share of tender loving care. Especially with his tendency to end up wrapping it around phone poles. His "unique" driving skills paired with a beefed up engine he asked you to modify have made every car ride an adventure. This would be fun to translate to trouble with riding horses :)

This sounds like fun. I was thinking alchemist at first (Chemistry major), but I kind of like the idea of a Physics major adapting his knowledge to become a Wizard or Sorcerer. I guess a Communications major could be a bard, but not too excited about that. I'll try to flesh something more out.

Oh, I meant to say he felt the sense of loneliness from the tree's spirit, though I'm sure Fiero is probably a bit of a loner, too :)

Yeah, I agree. The player aid card will definitely come in handy. Thanks.

Pirate Rob wrote:

So there are a few generic feats like improved initiative but most of the feats improve a feature/power/thingy in some way and just share their name with that power...

Thanks. That clears it up. Looks like I might have a challenge playing a rogue, but that class complexity probably applies to the normal d20 classes also. Looking forward to it.

Just ran across this "E6" idea on this thread for advancing caster level while multiclassing. I've always been a fan of multiclassing and I think this would work well. Let me know what you think.

Evershifter wrote:

Base Caster Level

Similar to Base Attack bonus, a character’s caster level will now be determined as a shared statistic. Base Caster Level only determines the level of a spell’s effect, not the access to spell levels or spell slots.

Caster Level Progression will follow a formula similar to BAB, as below:

Full Progression (+1/lv)
Alchemist
Bard
Cleric
Inquisitor
Druid
Magus
Oracle
Sorcerer
Summoner
Wizard
Witch

Partial Progression (+3/4 / lv)
Paladin
Ranger

Half Progression (+1/2 / lv)
Barbarian
Fighter
Monk
Rogue
Cavalier
Gunslinger

@Pirate GM: Those backgrounds sound good. I wasn't sure how general to make them.

For the Prince of Shadows, I figured since he's a rogue he'd have to have some kind of relationship with him. And I don't see my character as evil per se, so I figured Conflicted made sense.

I like the possible connection with the Prince of Shadows and the curse. I'm not sure how "real" the Icons are, but maybe there's bad blood between him and the Priestess (or their followers) and the curse was in exchange for some favor or debt owed between them.

Okay, here's a rough first stab. Thought having the Priestess as a Negative would be interesting. Not sure if Blood of dryads fits as a background or how exactly it would be applied. I guess some touch of magic.

Halfling rogue pregen

One Unique Thing: Cursed by the light (I like the idea of this, but the conditions are probably too harsh for a sneaky character)

Backgrounds:
Treestrider 3
Tunnel rat 2
Blood of dryads 2
Improvise tools/weapons 1

Icon Relationships:
1 Positive High Druid
1 Conflicted Prince of Shadows
1 Negative Priestess

Notes:

Birthed in the hollow of a tree, the forest was both his mother and guide. He knew the trees by name and the spirits within them. They became his family and he grew to be their guardian. He learned the secrets of the High Druid through their tutelage and saw that life was in balance.

Then monks of the Priestess found a spot to their liking and moved in. He watched them and saw them cure all banner of beasts and men. But when the animal population swelled and the growing number of men intruded on the land they did nothing. The forest gave way to industry and the monks moved on, deeper into the woods to repeat the cycle again.

So he fought back the only way he knew how: the law of nature and survival of the fittest. He attacked the monastery from the shadows, poisoning their crops and cutting their supply lines. When he was finally caught they branded him with a curse so he could never hide again. Whenever he intends to cause harm his body begins to glow with a brilliant light.

This sound pretty interesting! I want to check it out a little more, but definitely interested. I've played d20 3.0, 3.5, Pathfinder, etc. This looks like a cool variant.

I'm open to playing any class. The halfling rogue pregen you made looks pretty fun.

Welcome back. See anything interesting at Gencon? I've never been.

Hey, folks. Just wanted to touch base. Looks like people's lives are getting busy and I've been lagging a little. I'd like to get back more regular posting if we can.

I have noticed that by Saturday I'm usually ready for a break to recharge. So I'd like to plan on one post/day during the week and play the weekends by ear if that works for everybody.

@Kaern: No worries. Hope you're feeling better.

@Xzot: Okay, cool. Have a good time. Can you PM me your general plans, thoughts about your character?

@Nulmanen: Thanks, I'm having a lot fun with this, too. I'm looking forward to a long campaign.

Hello, all. Just wanted to touch base after the first couple of weeks. Make sure everyone's having fun and cool with the format so far.

I'm thinking about experience and leveling. Seems like some pbp games award levels when it seems appropriate instead of handing out XP. I think that might work well in this case to keep things even since everyone is going at their own pace. Let me know what you all think.

@Tie My Shöelace: No worries. Same thing happened to me on my vacation. Post when you can.

@Tie My Shöelace: Oh, okay. Sorry, I'll pm it to you. I think it may have to do with the the open italics tag I left in the quote above it. I missed that.

Hey, all. Sorry, busy day. I'll post more tomorrow. Fenrir, not sure why your spoiler text isn't showing up. It changes from Hide to Show for me, but nothing shows up.

@Tie My Shöelace: Okay, sounds good. Yeah, I know what you mean, my head's still in the Con, too. It's always depressing to see them starting to dismantle everything.

Xzot:
I'm going with 1 + Charisma bonus in contacts. I'm assuming your contacts will be tied different aliases, but let me know if any of them know you're a changeling.

@DragonBlood472: Thanks! We've basically got five different stories going. It will be interesting to see how they intersect.

@DragonBlood472: Sure, feel free to follow along. I'm running each character in their own spoiler tags for the moment, so it may be a little confusing to track all the threads.

@Nulmanen: Okay, sounds good. Feel free to jump in when you're ready.

Synot Rith:

The boy continues to stare blankly ahead as you move around him, though his head and eyes move slowly as if studying the air in front of him.

"Tell him, Karlo," one of the half-elf/half-orc twins says. You're still not sure which.

Karlo, human refugee from Cyre, sheepishly looks up at you. His family barely escaped the Day of Mourning that destroyed their country, but his parents died soon after they arrived in Sharn. Like many other survivors from the Mournland they slowly wasted away from arcane cancerous growths.

"I was..." Karlo pauses looking guilty, "...out in the ruins alone."
"Just looking around,"
Karlo quickly adds, then points to the mute boy, "He saved me from the ravers."

The mute boy suddenly jumps up and grasps your shirt with both hands.
"Ravers! In the glass tower!" the boy blurts out, looking distraught.

Okay, I put up the first post. Everyone's intro is in their own spoiler tag. I'm thinking I'd like to keep everything in spoilers until one or two of you actually meet. Kind of more cloak and dagger that way.

Let me know what you all think.

SHARN INQUISITIVE - Rhaan 8, 998 YK

ESCAPE FROM THE CITADEL PRISON
Mysterious flaming figure disappeared into the mists of Khyber’s Gate

A daring escape earlier this morning from Sharn’s Citadel prison lit the city with fear and speculation. Witnesses claim the figure dove purposely from the airship just as the airship elemental escaped from its binding. In the chaos he plummeted down the length of the Citadel tower and disappeared into the mists of the Cogs below. Our sources tell us he was scheduled to be shipped to Karnnath’s Dreadhold prison.

His escape is further obscured by the crashing ship and crew that followed him soon after, splintering on the cliffs of Myshan Gardens below. Authorities are not commenting, though a substantial reward is being offered for his capture. So take note all you amateur inquisitives, you could be on your way to becoming a star if you can catch the immolated madman.

- as always, Ravan Telo

(Monkeygod):

You stare at the silver coin in your hand, twisting it between your fingers. A single eyed beholder stares at you with menace on one side while several snakes dance on the other surface. Until now it's been copper jobs. Low income stuff. Busy work. But you asked for it. Pushed for something bigger. The silent wait was excruciating, but now you hover over the Sivis messenger tome in a mix of hesitation and excitement.

With a firm press the coin slides into the book’s circular indentation and locks into place. The arcane strap looses from its bonds and the book opens with a crackle of static. Almost immediately scrawled words appear on the page echoing in your mind with a familiar female voice. As usual the head of House Tarkanan speaks precisely to the point.

Karlov "Ash" d’Vadalis
Wanted for eco terrorism near the Icewood of Karrnath.

Known Associates: Ashbound druid cult
Last seen crossing the Aundair border near Cragwar. Unconfirmed sightings in Dura and Cliffside. Ashbound cultists seen recently at Vundry’s Curiosities in The Bazaar (Middle Dura).

Unique Characteristics: Missing nose bitten/burned off in ritualistic scarring and an affinity for bats.

Send him to The Keeper by any means necessary.

Xzot:

It's a warm humid night and your office has settled into the quiet of the end of the day. The blades of the Ghallanda cooling fan spin softly above, but the dimly lit Eberron shards dotting its surface do little more than move the hot air around. A gift from a grateful client, it’s a grim reminder that your last big case was months ago.

A silhouette appears through the mottled glass of your office door followed by a second larger one. They pause for a minute in muffled conversation, then the door swings open revealing two figures cloaked in thick blue cloth. A large half-orc quickly sizes you up through narrowed eyes glinting mail barely concealed beneath his cloak.

The smaller figure steps forward placing a reassuring hand on the half-orc’s chest. Her embroidered hood slides back to reveal a refined elven face. Though she moves with the ease and grace of nobility, there is a hint of desperation in her eyes.

"Excuse the hour. I am in need of your services."

Synot Rith:

You slip into the shadows of the alley behind your makeshift warehouse hideout, hand tightly grasping a new coin purse. The echoes of muffled shouts passes by outside as your eyes adjust to the dim light. You can hear the joking and carrying on inside of the Copperheads, though their excitement seems a bit higher than normal.

"He's a mute. Look at him."
"Naw, he's just too stupid to talk. My ma said there were kids like that."
"You never knew your ma, stupid."

As you round the corner you can see they're crowded around a new face. A younger boy staring forward wide eyed, almost oblivious to the others surrounding him. He seems to be looking straight through you.

Kaern d’Deneith:

You step off the Orien lightning rail feeling the residual soft static in the air. Your eyes scan the crowd of passengers again as they file out and spread out into the city. The wide halls of Sharn’s Terminus station spark old memories of a simpler time, but you dig into your bag and refocus on the task at hand. Once again you look over your notes on the fugitive:

Karlov “Ash” d’Vadalis - rising leader of local Ashbound druid cell wanted for terrorizing towns near Icewood. Responsible for firebombing many private and government buildings. Last seen crossing the Aundair border near Cragwar. Believed to be headed for Sharn.

A crudely drawn sketch shows a face disfigured by ritual scarring. His nose is missing and appears to have been burnt off.

Replacing the papers in your bag you notice a sky coach waiting nearby marked with the chimera emblem of House Deneith. An attendant armored in dark green studded leather stands outside the coach’s open door looking into the crowd expectantly.

Fenrir:

You awake from another nightmare, sweat dripping and heart pounding. They've been happening more frequently the past week. But this one was different. You grasp at faint memories. Visions of ruined buildings with large glass shards protruding from them. You were chasing something...someone. A small figure running from you, but your large legs easily overtake it. A boy's face...wide eyed and crying.

Shaking off the dream you open the shutters to the noonday sun. It was another late night trolling the streets of Dura gathering information:

  • Tensions between Daask and the Boromar clan seem to be heating up and word is Boromar is gearing up for something big, though the details are fuzzy.

  • Vundry’s in The Bazaar has been unusually quiet after a visit from a couple of black cloaked out of towners. Religious types. Of the more zealous nature. Some claim they wore the symbol of the Silver Flame.

  • Okay, just putting the finishing touches on the first post. Monkeygod and Xzot if you can give me your character names we can iron out the other details when you send me your stats. I'll be at the Con tomorrow until 5pm or so and I can put up the first post when I get home. See you all in Sharn!

Hey, sorry I ended up not having an internet connection on vacation. Also I was able to get a pass for Comic Con this weekend, so just got home. I'll try to finish up the first post tonight. If not, then definitely tomorrow night.

EDIT: Actually, looks like I need character sheets for Monkeygod and Xzot. Try to get those to me as soon as you can. I think we can go ahead and start.

Okay, folks. I'll be heading out today. Haven't heard from fbdaury, but everyone else is on board to start on the 20th. Feel free to shoot me ideas in the meantime. I may post some more ideas here for items, etc.

    Few more ideas for items.

    Lyran's Gift:

    50gp
  • jolt: 1d3
  • range: touch
  • 1/day
  • Cheaper model (25gp): 1 point of damage
  • Upgrade: charged version or more times/day
  • Taster Salts:

    25gp (maybe cheaper)
  • detect poison
  • single use: dissolves in liquid, or sprinkled on food, changes color (purple?) if poison is present
  • Privacy Candles:

Still working out the pricing on this, but basically this could let you have a private conversation with the range of the burning candle. There would be different colored candles for different levels of privacy. Black being the most secure.

silence 2nd-level (but inverse, keeps sound in)
illusion of calm 1st-level (to mask lip-reading)
ghost sound 0-level (Will save to hear through illusion)

Also, I'm making all least and lesser minor wondrous items half price due to mass production and warforged labor. Feather fall tokens are especially common and useful in the city of towers.

And here's a few ideas for lower end magic items available. If you have some other ideas let me know.

    Inquisitive's goggles:

    100gp
  • detect magic
  • half range (30ft)
  • 2 minutes/day total use time: 20 uses of 1 round (6 seconds) quick check, 4 rounds (24 seconds) to totally identify one spell (5 uses at this length)
  • half duration of detecting lingering aura
  • Shopkeeper's Glasses:

    50gp (45gp with command word)
  • detect magic
  • range: touch, 1 minute/day total
  • Alchemist's Friend:

    180gp with command word
  • drench for fires
  • Upgrade: breeze for poisonous gas (+135gp = 315gp total)
  • range: touch version, 2 uses/day for each
  • range: 25ft version, 1 use/day each
  • Fire Hydrant:

    (provided by city)
  • drench magic trap
  • 25ft range in poor sections
  • up to 60ft range in upscale areas

How did you want starting wealth figured, couldn't find anything on that?

Let's do max starting wealth for each class considering your characters are a little more established. For the Sentinel Marshall and Master Inquisitive archetypes use max starting wealth for Ranger.

Just wanted to touch base and see what the consensus is. Is everyone okay with starting on July 20th when I get back into town? I know Monkeygod said he's good either way.

If not, I could post the intros on Thursday before I leave and it may just be a little sporadic until I get back. But I'm sure I'll have some downtime on vacation.

Okay, I posted a story from the Sharn Inquisitive in the Campaign Info as an introduction of sorts.

    @Monkeygod: Sure, that's fine.

Either way is fine. I have introductions for each character that will start you off on your own, but you could know or have met some of the other characters before if you want.

Sure, added the discussion thread and consolidated some Campaign Info.

Here's the discussion thread. I consolidated all the rules and maps on the Campaign Info tab. May add some more info to it.

Okay, I've made the decisions for the final two slots. Storywise these characters will fit together the best. Thank you to everyone else who applied. Hopefully we'll game together in the future.

    Here's the lineup.

  • fbdaury: Kaern d'Deneith, a sentinel marshall
  • Xzot: changeling bard (or rogue) inquisitive
  • shrodingerscat: Synot Rith, rogue alchemist
  • Monkeygod: aberrant marked
  • Tie My Shöelace: Fenrir, shifter urban ranger (using Master Inquisitive class)

Also, let's go with Hero Points, but you each start with 3 points.

I have a vacation coming up next week July 11-19, but I should have an internet connection. I don't want lose our momentum, but it would probably be easier to start the game on the 20th after I get back. We could keep shooting ideas back and forth to flesh out the characters and their place in the city, contacts, etc. Let me know what you all think.

EDIT: The other option is starting sooner, but the posting would probably be irregular until I get back. Kind of excited to start myself.

  • Thanks, I look forward to it! As far as a name for a sphinx you could go Egyptian: Sekhmet, the lion solar goddess. Or Greek: Phix. Or maybe some other inspiration here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphinx

Or maybe something tied to lions. Apparently the Hebrew word for lion is Lavi.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion

@fbdaury: Yes, let's use Action/Hero Points. Let me figure out which system works best. Yes, you should have Sense Motive. I went ahead and switched this out for Knowledge (dungeoneering).

    @fbdaury: Okay, sounds good.

@Tie My Shöelace: For some reason your last post didn't pop up until now. I just PM'd a response. We can work with your backstory to figure out how and where you fit in the city. If you want to shoot me a couple different ideas that's fine.

@bi0philia: Nice, I'll have to take a look at that.

@Tie My Shöelace: No worries. That's actually one of the more experimental classes in there. So you might be better off going with urban ranger. Falconer could be interesting. Would you be tied to one of the Druid cults or maybe House Vadalis? Or are you just in tight with the shifter community?

@bi0philia: I like that pic. Yeah, closed recruitment for now, but I'll keep that in mind as a possibility. Most have opted for standard archetypes, so it's probably better to keep things balanced, but that archetype might be alright. I'd have to look at it.

    @Xzot:
Sounds good. That would give you access to the intelligence of the Circle of Song.

I'm going to go ahead and close recruitment for now. We've got a good number of characters here. I'm thinking 4 or 5 will be a good manageable number. 6 may be a little too much for this type of game.

Those of you who have given me backstory already are in (Xzot, shrodingerscat, Monkeygod). Tie My Shöelace and Dragon Knight, I'd like to hear more about your characters before I decide. fbdaury let me know if you're still interested. Your character may be at odds with some of the others here, but it could still be interesting. Gobo Horde, it may be a long shot, but go ahead and send me a character idea.

In fact I don't think we'll have a traditional party, but more individuals that encounter each other. I'll leave it up to the group to decide how we want this to play out or we can just jump in and see where it leads. The plot will bring you face to face. How you interact will be up to you. Should be a lot of fun!

  • fbdaury: Kaern d'Deneith, a sentinel marshall
  • Xzot: changeling rogue or bard
  • shrodingerscat: alchemist
  • Dragon Knight: warforged summoner
  • Monkeygod: aberrant marked
  • Tie My Shöelace: shifter urban ranger
  • Gobo Horde: ?

  • @Tie My Shöelace: Oops, sorry, didn't mean to leave your name off. We probably won't touch Northedge and Skyway much. Most likely people will start in Dura, Tavick's Landing, Menthis Plateau and possibly the Cogs.
