Background: Zilroy's family has lived in Ptolus since the time of his great-grandfather (the famous -- and later scandalous -- Sir Zathanias Specterbane). Now he is the last of that name and a twice-failed businessman (a carting service and a tavern). His wife (Anna, a distant cousin to the nobles of House Nagel) has thrown him out of the family home; she bankrolled his businesses, but now is tired of his pipe dreams. And to top it all off, he's being tormented by the unquiet spirit of his great-grandfather to restore glory to the family name (which was tarnished due to Zathanias's appetite for gambling, booze and loose women in his later years). His exploits as a "delver" have been unsuccessful to date, though; on his first (and last) mission so far, several of his party were eating by rat creatures.
He's living with some other aspirants of Lothian in some rather shabby quarters in the Temple district; Anna is living in their apartment above the tavern they used to own (The Thirsty Horse) in the Market district.
