Zarkus grew up on the edge of a human settlement. His tribe, while not exactly friends with the humans of the vill, we not active enemies either. Many nights young Zark would sneak near the homes of these humans and listen to the stories they told in the dark. Most were about valiant warriors who slew dragons with magic swords, or great wizards who could save entire cities with their magic.
Zarkus began to tell these stories to his friends. Most ignored or beat upon the wayward goblin, but a few sat and listened and soon they were playing their own games of "goblin warrior slays hideous monster cow" and "The Wizard vs the Chickens". He soon realized that some of the "brave" tactics that the stories told about the human warriors would not work for the much smaller and weaker goblins...so he came up with his own version.
Being in close was a bad thing for a goblin in combat with "big 'uns, so Zark honed his abilities with a bow, using a stronger and stronger pull until he could out-shoot anyone in the encampment. He was also very quiet, so some of the elders would send him out to hunt...and they were rarely disappointed. The little one with the funny ears was quite good.
The final challenge came when, after the humans had completed their harvest of the weeds in their ground, they held a big party. Gathering his courage Zarkus showed up during their tournament. He had decided to compete in the archery contest. The main prize was a beautifully crafted bow, and Zarkus wanted to make it his own.
Remembering the stories of the "Valiant" knights, Zark tried to act as he thought he should, which was a little over the top. The people of the town did not know what to do with this polite goblin asking to take part in their contest. At first, they wanted to deny him, but a few of the elders saw this as a great opportunity to better their relations with the local goblin band, so admitted the youth into the lists.
All were astounded to see the creature shoot with such skill and care. His manners were impeccable, if a little dated, and he soon had won over a large crowd of supporters. As it came down to the last two archers, Zarkus made a slight mistake and missed the red bullseye, and had to settle for the blue. Smiling despite knowing he had lost, he none the less watched in astonishment as his opponent missed not only the red, but the blue ring as well. He had won and the bow was his! Over joyed he returned to his tribe to show them the prize he had won. From then on, while not openly allied together, the goblins and humans knew they had nothing to worry about each other.
Zarkus grew swiftly, as his kind are wont, and soon was setting out to see the wide world, his prize bow always in hand as he went in search of his future.
