I have a character with Detect Magic continually active due to the racial drow feat "Greater Drow Nobility". The Detect Magic spell has a duration of "Concentration or up to 1 minute/caster level". The entry on explaining the meanings of spell durations in the magic section of the core rulebook states that Concentration duration means that the spell is active until they have broken concentration. To concentrate on a spell is a Standard Action.
The only mention of concentration needed for the spell is in the duration. As Detect Magic can be made permanent by means of a Permanency spell, the question is larger than the scope of the feat that brought up the question to start with. My question is this:
Since Concentration only effects the duration of the spell, and my duration is "Permanent", and no longer requires concentration to maintain the spell, do I have to take a standard action each round to use detect magic, still? If not, what kind of action would I need to take to fulfill the round requirements for gaining information?
The mechanic without it being permanent is that when I stop concentrating, or have my concentration broken, the spell ends. Do I now gain information as long as the effect remains within the spell's range?
