Alabaster Outcast +1 Diplomacy & Intimidate within Magnimar. Arcane ReservoirAn arcanist has an innate pool of magical energy that she can draw upon to fuel her arcanist exploits and enhance her spells. The arcanist’s arcane reservoir can hold an amount of magical energy equal to three times the arcanist’s level. Each day when preparing spells, the arcanist’s arcane reservoir fills with raw magical energy, gaining a number of points equal to 1 + 1/2 her arcanist level. Any points she had from the previous day are lost. She can also regain these points through the consume spells class feature and some arcanist exploits. The arcane reservoir can never hold more points that the total mentioned above, points gained in excess of this maximum are lost. Points from the arcanist reservoir are used to fuel many of the arcanist’s powers (see arcane exploits). In addition, the arcanist can expend one point from her arcane reservoir as a free action whenever she casts an arcanist spell. If she does, she can choose to increase the caster level by 1 or increase the DC of the spell by 1. She can expend no more than one point from her reservoir on a given spell in this way.

Background (Kaer Maga spoilers):
Born the 10th day of Gozran, 4686 in Magnimar Wilhem was priveleged to grow up as the second child of the noble Versade family. All was not quite as it seemed for the Versades however, the family struggling to keep up the facade of an afluent house, while the extravagant parties and celebrations they threw for the elite of Magnimar continued to empty their dwindling coffers. Welhem, a quiet, studious boy fell squarely in his elder sister's shadow; an outgoing, convivial girl who had inherited seemingly all of the family's reputed talent she was lavished with their parents attentions as the potential savior of the family's fortunes.
Ignored by his mother Savasha Welhem nevertheless received some support from his father, until he passed away as Wilhem approached manhood. To the young man's eye his mother wasted no time in moving on, betraying her husband's memory as she married a wealthy elven merchant. Wilhem remained in the family home for a few more years, but eventually he could stand it no more. He informed his mother--now pregnant with twin boys to her new husband—that he was leaving to seek his own fortune in the world. He almost reconsidered when he saw her shocked expression, but little more than a week later he found himself venturing forth accompanied by Gralk, a particularly bestial looking Half-Orc gladiator who the family had employed in the past, and—what seemed to him at least—a rather meager amount of money and supplies. Wilhem and Gralk wandered for some time, the young scholar seeking aimlessly for a mentor beyond the bounds of Magnimar. Finally after half a year their weary feet carried them to the City of Strangers, where Gralk originally hailed from. It was his suggestion that there were several arcane organizations and groups amongst the chaotic mishmash of it's inhabitants. A few weeks later Wilhem found himself apprenticed to one of Ankar-Te's necromancers-for-hire. It was a thoroughly unpleasant experience but Wilhem proved to be not only a quick study, but to show some innate understanding of the nature of magic. While he may not have exceeded his master in raw power he quickly—at least for arcane study, only a bare handful of years—outgrew the man's tutelage, which was focused primarily on manipulating the flesh of corpses to the customer's specifications, and then animating the decaying form into a shambling zombie. For some time after his short apprenticeship he descended into youthful debauchery and celebration, frequenting the ill-reputed burroughs of Hospice, and the chaotic often dangerous streets of Ophiat. It took some time but eventually his thirst for more arcane knowledge—not to mention dwindling funds and the toll of many hangovers—pulled him from his reckless, rebelious actions. Waking up one morning on the border of Cavalcade and Highside Stacks he found himself looking up at one of that districts tall towers. From somewhere amidst his hangover befuddled thoughts he dredged up the stories he'd heard of the Great Library. Somehow despite his disheveled appearance after having slept in the gutter, he was admitted to the building by one of the wizened caretakers. He was lead to a table already piled with several books, mostly in a language consisting entirely of strange runes seemingly of great age. A few were of more recent origin however, written in Varisian and Taldane positing various theories regarding the ancient empire that Wilhem had only heard of in stories and legends as Thassilon. Wilhem returned over to the library over the following days and weeks, always admitted by a silent caretaker. He managed to scrounge enough funds and supplies to learn a spell to help him decipher the older books as well, and was fascinated by the knowledge held within those ancient tomes. Over time new books replaced the volumes he had finished, and it became apparent that the stoic caretakers were guiding his education. It took him perhaps longer than it should have to realize that he was being educated and perhaps guided by the stoic librarians, but he did not balk. He sensed no malice from them, and was more than pleased to have access to the wealth of knowledge they provided him without the normally exhorbitant fees they charged the other people he witnessed poring over book and scrolls. After a few weeks he was sleeping in a small cell beneath the tower and his true indoctrination began as the monks shared the secret purpose of their order. The information only built upon his growing fascination for this ancient empire and he swiftly became a devotee of the Peacock Spirit as he continued his arcane education. It was several years later when he would be disturbed from his new life as a peaceful scholar. The city was abuzz with news of armies on the march, led by—or so rumor claimed—an ancient wizard of incredible power. The librarians of the Spire were not the only ones to recognize descriptions of rune-enslaved giants and one of the runelords. The news was both thrilling to Wilhem and terrifying at the same time. The librarians were not one to make hasty decisions; their order had maintained their vigil for 10,000 years after all. Eventually, even with the limited amount of knowledge that managed to reach Kaer Maga past the seige of three enemy forces the decision was made. The reemergence of Karzoug and Xin-Shalast was too big an opportunity to pass up. Wilhem was selected and preparations made to sneak him past the beseiging forces. Gralk, who had long since made his home in Hospice was pulled from his comfortable routine at Bloodbrothers, and the Strapping Lad and charged with procurring a small group of dependable men to protect his former charge. ??? (would he have been able to sneak out? Teleport out? What would have happened if he was captured? Etc.) Provisioned by the Spire librarians and charged with seeking any information on the wereabouts of the true library, Wilhem travelled the Varisian countryside learning what he could. Despite all he had read of the ancient runelords and their empire he was still shocked to find how much had changed in the few short years since Karzoug had reappeared. Discovering the rise to prominence of the Cyphermages he travelled to Riddleport, hoping to join their number and thus gain access to their discoveries. He was able to do so but found that he would have a long journey to learn anything of import from the order. He has served them loyally for some years, and has found the time both fascinating and frustrating. He has glimpsed any number of incredible discoveries but despite his best efforts has been unable to prove himself worthy of being entrustrated with greater responsiblities and access to the undoubtedly growing archives. Yet he perserveres, waiting with dwindling patience for an opportunity, which may just have presented itself with the establishment of a new chapter in his home city of Magnimar. Wary though he has been to return home the lure of potential advancement has won over his hesitance, and he has recently returned to that city. The discovery that his family has fallen into disfavour with the new council of ushers, teetering once again on the brink of poverty has only served to hearten him as he looks forward to perhaps finally making some progress on his secret mission for the Spire. |
