DESCRIPTION:

A brawny, handsome and barrel-chested lad with an ample beer belly. He is dressed in finery and has a sly, knavish demeanor. He wields a huge greatsword!

BACKGROUND:
The son of a Mendevian crusader and a dockside prostitute, Welk grew up as a vagrant river rat in the River Kingdoms of the Sellen. As a youth he built up his strength as a dock labourer - he is beefy enough to pass as a tough guy if he chooses to. River life exposed him to the diverse cultures of the Inner Kingdom and trained him in the wheeling and dealing of river trade. His wily negotiating skills helped him to secure gainful employment wherever he went. But Welk is also a lusty bloke, and tends to betray his own business dealings by getting tangled in scandalous affairs by the way. Tired of low-born fishwives and their vengeful husbands - he decided to tag along with a group of crusaders on their way to Mendev. Welk is a big man, and can handle himself in a fight. It seemed a grand fit for him at first. The caché of being a Crusader expanded the theatre of his lustful exploits. But he lacked the military discipline and proclivity for violence needed for that lifestyle. He wisely scuttled ship before before the warriors embarked upriver to more brutal conquests.

Now Ustalav was a particularly attractive destination for a rogue like Welk. He had heard about the charming opulence of its towns and he admired the aristocratic grace of its ladies. He saw in this country a new field for conquest. He became friends with Professor Lorrimer shortly after disembarking from that crusade two years ago. He was impressed by the elegant company kept by the Professor. Welk decided to ingratiate himself to the Professor - and weasel his way into the old fellow's service. Using his natural wiles and charms, Welk secured employment in the offices of the Professor's chamberlain. There he found fertile grounds for scheming and debauchery as the retainer in that noble household.

The Professor`s recent death is something of a setback for the young cad. As Lorrimer's manservant he was a made man. He suspects that that some of Lorrimer's estate staff have it in for him and that they are thinking of laying him off. If he were to operate as a freebooter he would likely have to cross paths with the Scarzni - an unsavoury prospect to be sure. Frantically wondering how to keep out of trouble -he arrives at Lorrimer's funeral hoping to imprvise a new profitable scheme .....

Welk inherited his father's girth...if not his bravery. Then again...to each his own. His father died at a young age in a suicidal mission on the Worldwound's edge. Welk has no interest in that sort of career....but he'll take up his Dad's blade to use as he sees fit, thank you!

How did such a sleazy scoundrel become a trusted retainer to the Professor? Well sometimes the Prof liked to keep the company of young ladies...sometimes he needed escorts or attractive folk to liven up dinner engagements or entertain his various guests and associates. Welk demonstrated a talent for procuring such services.
