I doubt Tiasar would overlap with a sorcerer much, depending on the sorcerer's spell selection. Throwing a fireball or charming an enemy will be on the bottom of the list. He'd rather summon something, create walls to divide enemies, etc

Tiasar: Celestial Pegasus specifically stated that he would be focusing on summoning and and field control, though. That said, I do not doubt that the expanded spell selection of the wizard will allow you to fill roles he is not able to. It was just an observation of the identical foci of your characters.

Zapi: I do recognise that my personal experiences may have skewed my perception a little concerning the link between good RP and good character-building. I suppose the point was that I focus on both RP and character concept, and believe that both can be done well simultaneously.

Jade and Zapi: I actually take back what I said about both of you focusing on melee being a potential problem. I actually think it will be fine now that I think about it. The Dragonlance series was based on the campaign of the 2 authors, and their party consisted of:

Dragonlance party:

Riverwind: barbarian (fighter in 2nd ed)(melee)
Caramon Majere: Fighter (melee)
Sturm Brightblade: Paladin (melee)
Tanis Half-elven: Ranger (melee 75% of the time)
Tasslehoff Burrfoot: Rogue (melee if he fought at all)
Goldmoon: Cleric (healer)
Raistlin Majere: Wizard (evil OP mage of DOOM who went on to attempt god-hood and, in one version of reality, suceeeded )

Basically, they had 4 melee warriors, a melee rogue, a cleric and a wizard. And they went on to weave an EPIC story that remains one of the most memorable and famous in the genre. So...I suppose a melee-heavy party isn't such a problem after all. XD

On the topic of roles, thus far we seem to have:

Confirmed:
Cleric of Serenrae: Presumably healer
Ranger: Role unknown

-------------------------------------------------------------

Potential:
Monk/sorc: Melee warrior/melee caster (to give an indication, at 2nd level will learn shocking grasp and color spray)
Sorcerer: Summoner/control
Conjurer: Summoner/control (some overlap with the sorc?)
Ranger: Role variable
Rogue: Role unknown

Seems to be some overlap between the sorc and conjurer, and depending on Zapi's ranger, seems to be quite some room for flexibility so long as not everyone focuses on melee or range.

Hi everyone, I'm the ranger from the group who seems to give headaches to people with his mere existence.

I was wondering how many people here are actually making characters to fit a backstory or personality they wish to roleplay, and how many are going for optimalization within the game's mechanic? I'm a passionate roleplayer, and while I've read some things that intrigued me so far, there were some others that I found rather daunting.

I personally feel that you can do both, most of the time. For me, I usually think of a concept and backstory, then figure out how best to make it work (since ineffective characters are no fun).

IMO, the ideal is for a player to put effort into both the story and mechanical concept of his character. I've actually found that half the time the ones who can't build effective characters are also the ones who are unable to roleplay well. At least, that was the case with my previous 2 groups at uni.

Where it starts to get overboard however is when we get things like say...Aasimar crossblooded sorcerers with aberration and infernal bloodlines and eldritch heritage draconic with a celestial imp for a familiar(would both love and hate to see the family reunion for that one). In the same vein are those who build a character, but have not put any real thought into who their character is, what they've been through and how they got to where they are in the story.

I've actually yet to see a player who swings the opposite way, by being a great RPer, but who builds characters who don't do much. On the other hand, I've seen more than a few characters who don't do much played by players more boring than wet cardboard.

I WILL say though that if i'm finding myself short of a flanking buddy then i'll very well play a fighter or a paladin, depending if there's a face in the group or not.

I should be able to work well as a flanking buddy.

@JadeSoGeeky: Either a Paladin or a Bard would be good - we've already got a Ranger as well as a Cleric, though.

@FiddlersGreen: I'll have to look over those things tonight, need to be getting ready once I finish this post. I've checked out Maptoools in the past, and found the learning curve a bit too steep for me - if I had more time to sit down with it, maybe play in a few games using it by GMs who were experienced with the tool who could help me learn it better... but that's just not an option now. Besides, Tabletop Forge does everything I want from a VTT. It does have a tutorial video and a user manual on the website (tabletopforge.com), but was intuitive enough that for most things, I was able to pull it up and figure it out on my own fairly quickly. Finally, I suspect you were looking at the old Player's Guide for the 3.5 modules - check out this one instead: http://paizo.com/products/btpy8tgl?Pathfinder-Adventure-Path-Rise-of-the-Ru nelords-Anniversary-Edition-Players-Guide

@robbgobb: We will definitely be using Tabletop Forge for this game, not Maptools.

Thanks, Marius. I've changed Wei's backstory a little to place him in Sandpoint, and have included some elements from what I recall of what I managed to play of the RotRL campaign (we had to stop just after the

stuff:
ghouls in the cornfields
because we couldn't find a common time to meet up anymore).

I've also selected a campaign trait, so Wei should be good to go.

"This talk of the Swallowtail festival intrigues me, and I am told that Sandpoint is no stranger to to my countrymen. Perhaps I will join you in visiting this town.

Pray tell, how many more moons must rise before we can partake of this revelry? "
