Backstory rewritten and stat block/sheet updated! Please let me know if there is anything that needs fixing. I'd hate to sign a contract without knowing there were flaws waiting to damn me without me noticing. Vilbert is an infernal binder. He will focus on bringing devils to fight with him and his allies. Conjuration spells backed with enchantment and some evocation, becoming a battle mage working to support the frontliners and provide diabolic assistance both with summons and with opposing fiends. Skills in Diplomacy and Sense Motive can provide a party face in certain circles. Role in a nutshell: support mage providing infernal reinforcements.
Yes, I have read up on Infernal Contracts in The Kintargo Contract. His out is to get another to sign his/her soul over in exchange. That was the out for his friends when Vilbert signed his name to remove theirs. I took the Foul Brand drawback (the cut on his palm to sign in blood). Also, I am open to a fall, but it is not planned. What I mean is that depending on how his story within the AP unfolds, how he reacts and how others react to him, will determine if he is vulnerable to a fall into darkness. Also Also, altering the Secret kept from him to become that Lorthact wanted Vilbert from the start, and that's why he allowed Vilbert to sign in exchange for his three friends, if that is alright with you, almighty Darkwing Dungeon Master.
TheChelaxian is submitting Vilbert Cluny, a human wizard dropout from the Acadamae. Link is to myth-weavers sheet. Full stat block and backstory in alias. He is an infernal binder who will focus on battlefield control, summoning devils (when he can) and using enchantment and evocation spells to support allies and devils. He is Lawful Neutral, but might shift into Lawful Evil if the story develops that direction. That's up to our DM's storytelling and where it goes. If he goes LE, he will take up the Diabolist prestige class. Five Points:
1 Regret, for losing so much to a wasted endeavor and for his friends' loss of their souls at his expense
2 Determination, to surpass any graduate the Acadamae has produced and to prove his own power 3 Subtlety, he studies the covert deal-making of devils and sees the appeal 4 Dark Humor, finding satire and sarcasm hilarious 5 Honor, firmly believing that a bargain must be upheld Two Goals:
1 Discover the true identity of Lorthact and what the devil wants with him.
2 Challenge Master Toff Ornelos and prove to the Acadamae that he could outclass the school. Two Secrets:
Kept Himself He tried to summon a devil, and it backfired and almost got loose. His rival, Isiel, took the blame.
Kept From Him Isiel was the one to summon Lorthact to save Vilbert. Relationships:
Lorthact The mysterious devil that freed Vilbert of his mortal chains in exchange for immortal ones.
Dalphira Cluny The Varisian glassblower that raised her son and prays to Desna for his future. Sevevi Zeutomar A Chelaxian woman and fellow student, they were peers, partners, friends, and then lovers. Isiel Lhulien Vilbert's elven rival, they are not exactly enemies but they would often argue and furiously try and outdo the other's accomplishments. Key Memories:
1 That night the devil Lorthact appeared to Vilbert and showed him the contract that held his and his friends souls. The scar on his palm where he used his own blood to sign the contract and spare his friends' souls still burns.
2 The night Vilbert and Sevevi consummated their love. He confronted her alone after learning she had signed that contract. She confessed how she felt about him and that it was worth it to save him. 3 The time Vilbert tried to summon a devil and it got loose. Isiel and Vilbert were impatient and tried before they were really ready. Toff Ornelos banished the fiend, but not before it wounded the two students. Isiel took the blame, making Vilbert look like he tried to stop him from summoning the devil. 4 The time he spent in the dungeons of the Order of the Nail's citadel. The Hellknights tortured Vilbert to try and get him to confess to the crimes he was accused of, and those memories still give him nightmares from which he awakes in a cold sweat. Fear: Imprisonment and physical pain. He remembers all too well being held by the Hellknight Order of the Nail and the torture he endured whilst in their custody. He will avoid Hellknights and anything illegal if there is even a slight chance he'll get caught.
@ Cuan: Asbadan actually strongly supports House Thrune, believing them the legitimate rulers of Cheliax by right of power, cunning, and bringing of an end to national chaos. He may not agree with some of their beliefs, but he seeks to rise to join their ranks at almost any cost. "When/If" he is offered this chance to represent Thrune in Korvosa, he would secretly to a little victory dance in his apartment. On a similar note, Asbadan also is a loyal Chelaxian, believing strongly in his homeland's superiority to the rest of Avistan - if not the world. Second only to his own path for power, he hopes to bring glory to his beloved country through expanding its influence to reach and then exceed its previous holdings before Aroden's death.
@ Hiram: Point, well, to clear up that misunderstanding, Asbadan does not believe that strongly in Thrune's banning of the other powers of Hell, though he does recognize Asmodeus as the true master of the Nine. The fact that Hiram worships Moloch holds no reason to Asbadan to sell out the Garundi man to Chelish authorities. After all, his path was shown to him by lesser fiends anyway (devil or otherwise). @ Those seeking to alter their submissions: While I understand and respect ya'lls decision, I hope that alone isn't making you sack a good idea. I am obsessed with Cheliax as per my prime alias and so I make a lot of my characters and even more concepts based upon Cheliax and her damnation. I am, however, a fan of strangers and different characters, while they may be opposed to many of each others' goals, finding common ground and eventually working together to achieve their ends. But that's just my two coppers. I just hope ya'll do whatever it is you want to do with your characters. @ The topic of slavery: Asbadan, being a Chelaxian/diabolist at his core, holds strong to the idea that there are masters and there are servants/slaves. Believing himself accidentally misplaced in the caste system, he is willing to prove that he is no slave to mortals, but their master and but a servant to the powers of true authority such as House Thrune and the Princes of Darkness. Those he encounters that are considered by law to be property he treats as such.

That is a very viable idea, Hiram. Asbadan, as I mentioned, is himself a devil-worshiper, and the idea of "borrowed" muscle in exchange for favors/coin would appeal very much to the diabolist. I'd see them getting along quite well, considering the similarities in their stories.
Hmm, well, I could see Asbadan being a rival of the banisher wizard Ruttle, as he seeks to bring power to the field, not take it away. Though he may not feel any need to use a dancer, he might have bought Vinexa to make himself look superior to others, using her as yet another tool, albeit a lie. Hiram and Asbadan would be an interesting conversation pair. Hiram worships Moloch, but Asbadan venerates devilkind as a whole (diabolism). He also did a lot of research into devil worship, so religious debates between the two might be entertaining. Edmund would be a fascination to Asbadan, but probably little more. Being a proper Chelaxian, the wizard sees devils as both a superior being, but also as an ally/servant to the Empire to further their own goals. Tieflings are a reminder to not mingle or meddle in Hell's affairs. As for Edmund's seeking his fiendish parentage, Asbadan could probably find out for him given enough time; a deal might be made to use Edmund's semi-noble standing to improve his own chances at power. Asbadan would see Marcus as what could have befallen himself had the infernal not interfered, and both respect and "pity" the commoner. Similar to Edmund but more pronounced, Asbadan might gravitate towards Tellis in hopes of gaining ground amongst the noblity. He'd probably ignore the rogue Arrigo unless addressed. Jane, idk, a good friend of Asbadan was a gnome, but the rest of the race seems too chaotic and unpredictable to him. "In the eyes of the divine, what are we mortals but dust beneath their fingernails? Even less so in the eyes of devils, but to them we might prove our worth. Gods use us for lesser agendas, but Hell openly preaches order and peace on a cosmic scale. What could be a more noble cause? I seek to be a part of this eternal peace, and so I both serve and use devils to bring about this righteous end to the evils of chaos. When Pharasma sentences me to the shores of Avernus, I will present my soul to my masters and will be whatever I may be to aid in Hell's eternal peace. Power is peace, order is righteousness, evil a mortal point of view."
I'm game for moving something like practice RP to the discussion thread, its something I've seen done and it helps get each other into a feel as to how to roleplay their chars. Considering its a mission from the crown, perhaps there is an antichamber where everyone who's applied is waiting, and we are getting to know who we might be working with in character? Moving it to the discussion thread makes less posts on the recruitment thread, thus making more apps less intimidated to apply further.
It's weird the reverse loyalty thing a lot of us got going. People are on the receiving end of Lawful Evil's hierarchy, yet somehow that makes us more loyal to our oppressors. Might have misread this theory, but its what I'm seeing. Asbadan kinda is the same, but his loyalty is more to Hell/himself than to Cheliax, per se.
Didn't see the first "For Queen" campaign till it was too late, hoping for this one. This here is Asbadan Lotheustan, an aspiring diabolist and a desperate devil's bid for more influence in Hell's fiendish circles. He might have been hired by Queen Abrogail II as not only a voice for Cheliax, but a voice for her infernal allies too. I plan to upgrade the imp in his backstory into his familiar, but for now, he has an Infernal-speaking "thrush". I believe he is good to go, but if something is off let me know and it shall be remedied. |
