Background:
Second cousin to Princess Eutropia, Victor Stavian grew up with all the privilege and perils inherent to being distantly related to the Grand Prince of Taldor. His was a life of material comfort and indulgence, colored by constant threats and direct influence. He was groomed from a young age to play the Great Game in the Taldan courts, despite the fact that he never displayed much aptitude for it. As often as he could get away with it, Victor would sneak away from his parents' estate to seek more visceral thrills among the common people of Oppara.
It was on one such occasion that Victor stumbled upon an event that would change the course of his life. A gang of lowlifes had ambushed a wayward member of the Ulfen Guard, and though the mighty warrior had managed to take out several of the thieves, they ultimately mortally wounded him and made off with his gold and jewlery. The man was at death's door when Victor found him, but he begged weakly for Victor to place his axe in his hands before he passed, that he might be admitted to a warrior's afterlife in Valenhall. Victor complied with his dying request, and moments after the Ulfen guardsman passed, a crack of thunder signaled the appearance of a mighty valkyrie!
The beautiful warrior woman stored the dead man's soul within her spear before turning her imposing gaze upon Victor. "You have performed an honorable deed this day," she said. "I sense a great potential within your soul. What is it you wish to do with your life, boy?"
In awe of the valkyrie, Victor replied, "I wish to be a mighty warrior, like you!"
"Then let it be so," the valkyrie replied. Thunder boomed again as a bolt of lightning struck Victor Stavian, and by the power of the gods, he was transformed! But, much to his surprise, the power had transformed him into a strong and beautiful woman of Ulfen ancestry!
"Zounds!" the transformed woman cried. "When I said I wanted to be like you, I didn't mean it literally!" But the valkyrie was gone. In her place stood a curious cat. Victor felt an empathic link with the cat, and realized she was to serve as her spirit guide to help her understand and master her newfound abilities.
With the cat's guidance, Victor learned how to change back into his normal form (much to his relief). But his female form proved quite agile and strong. He honed his fighting skills, learning to battle with sword and shield. Now, he lives a double life. By day, he is mild-mannered Victor Stavian, the soft nobleman. But by night, he roams the streets of Oppara, dealing out justice to the wicked as the enigmatic Shield Maiden! He knows that if his secret ever got out, he would bring great shame upon himself and his entire family. But he has a calling from the gods, and a burning desire for battle that cannot be denied!
