Background:
Nio's family has been in service to House Aulamaxa for generations. They earned their surname Venaticus for being recognized as hunters and animal trainers of great skill. Rather than the typical hunting hounds or even trained lions, Nio's people specialize in training deadly raptors, originally from the deepest Mwangi jungles but now bred in Cheliax.

His mother was once an itinerant priestess of Milani. Some would say she was a rabble rouser and revolutionary, but Nio never knew her as anything other than his mother. His parents met and fell in love in Sargava, and she returned with her Chelaxian husband to the one relatively free city in Cheliax.

She apparently didn't stop her preaching, though, because she was recently arrested for sedition by Barzillai Thrune's forces. Nio had never given much thought to politics before and was generally a law abiding citizen, but with his mother in jail and possibly facing the hangman's noose he heard Milani's call and set out to overthrow the illegitimate and evil invaders.

To his surprise, his father didn't object at all and in fact put Nio in contact an old friend, Lictor Octavio Sabinus. Apparently Nio's father often helped the Order of the Torrent by supplying them animals to track down kidnap victims. Nio never considered becoming a Hellknight before, but the Order of the Torrent's pledge to free those illegally taken from their families greatly appeals to him.

Appearance:
Nio is a typical Chelaxian commoner- pale skin, dark hair, dark eyes- if a bit more fit than most and with clothes in somewhat better repair than you typically find on the street. He wears his hair cut short, the better to fit under a helmet, but cut in a commoner's imitation of noble fashion.

His armor is made up of hundreds of small plates laced together with silk cord so that it almost looks like fish scales and lacquered a blue so dark it is nearly black. His helmet is open faced, to allow for maximum visibility, but everything from his nose down is concealed behind a veil of steel mail.

His weapon of choice is a heavy war bow made of some kind of black wood, paired with a quiver bristling with arrows where most warriors would wear their sword. As a backup weapon he has a wicked looking black iron morningstar on his other hip.

At his side is some kind of enormous bird, standing higher than his waist and well over 10 feet long from the tip of its nose to the end of its feathery tail. It's actually quite pretty, with a diamond pattern scintillating in the sleek, sky blue feathers across its back, with the feathers shading to brilliant bright blue along its tail and up the front of its throat, and a darker blue covering the tri-tipped claws of its stunted wings. Its muzzle and single huge talon on each foot are a stark yellow, almost as if in warning.
