Reading the synopses for the later Reign of Winter books, there's a lot of planet hopping, which may or may not be magic-heavy.

Maybe try Carrion Crown? Lots of undead, easy to tie that into magic as a forbidden concept. The second book, Trial of the Beast, has a heavy alchemy/mad scientist background which could probably be retooled as venturing into technology of the past, with varying results. Only thing is part four has Lovecraftian aliens and deities, which may interfere with your desire for nothing extra-planar.

I'm also new the the GMing gig, Carrion Crown will be my first campaign, but it seems workable for what you're looking for.

This'll be my first official foray into Pathfinder and RPGs in general, so I'm looking forward to this campaign. I'll be GMing, and my group going into it will be:

Dalia, female gnome rogue (alignment TBD)
Grimm, male half-orc fighter CG
Grunyar, male dwarf cleric (alignment TBD)
Iandoli, female half-elf paladin LG

Not entirely sure what to expect out of them, all of us newbs, but it'll be fun finding out!
