About Varshk

Standing over six and a half feet tall, the forest green skinned behemoth regards you with wary expression of distrust. Long emerald highlighted black dredlocks hang nearly to the small of his back, held together with a rough leather thong. A chain shirt hangs from his broad shoulders with a backpack slung across. He holds a finely crafted longspear of an unusual dark wood. A dagger hangs on his hip while a brace of shortspears ride in a long quiver alongside the backpack.

Background

Varshk was born into the Spear-bearer tribe on the lonely moors of the Shadow March. He grew up in the typical nomadic fashion of his people. Moving across the moors to follow prey herds, cutting peat for drying and burning as fuel and mock battles to hone the warrior skills. At the onset of adolesence, Varshk began to experience pains across the skin and muscles of his chest. This pain persisted for weeks, waxing and waning in its intensity. On one particular night, the great feast night of Vvaraak, in rememberance of the orc nation's lost guardian, Varshk's pains became so terrible that he stumbled in the chanting wardance and cried out in agony. His cries became screams and as he felt the muscles separate from his breastbone, the screams became a sound not heard for millenia; the might roar of a dragon. Light burned across the flesh of Varshk's chest indelibly inscribing the least symbol of Vvaraak in pulsing argent scrollwork. The feast interrupted, the myriad orcs of the tribe stood in stunned silence. The Gatekeepers slowly approached the young orc. They studied the mark upon his breast and quietly muttered to one another. Finally, the eldest of the venerable druids spoke in a loud voice. "The great wyrm of the Shadow Marches, Vvaraak, has seen fit to send his spirit forth into the world once more. This humble youth has been chosen to carry the mark of our once and always lord." At this proclaimation, the orcs flew into a celebratory rage that lasted for days. Vvaraak risen!

Varshk was taken in by the Gatekeepers to be trained in the lore of his patron and mentored in what to expect. He learned the deeper secrets of his people's history and how to excel at Vvaraak's favored pastimes such as, hunting and tall tale telling. Upon reaching maturity, he was given one of the clan's namesake weapons, a darkwood spear crafted by the tribe's master crafter. He was given a chain shirt, short spears and basic gear. The elder pointed to the moors and bade him go. Find adventure and learn the ways of the others. Bring back your experiences and enrich the tribe. Varshk never looked back.
