About Variel the Old

My story...:

Most bards I've known would agree that a story should be entertaining to be worth telling. Most scholars would say it would need to be thorough and complete... Well, I'm no bard nor scholar but this is my story so far:

My parents were killed when I was a baby. A goblin raid, as far as I know. I have never mourned them, but I still remember a faint caress with the scent of lemon and mint from time to time... I guess that's my first memory and the last I have of my blood parents.
I grew up in an orphanage, surrounded by others like me: victims of war, plagues and calamities. We had little but each other, and we learned to cherish that.
Orphanages aren't the most kind of places and soon as we were old enough they kicked us out to the bigger world. Old enough by human standards, mind you... so what could we do but taking the risk and becoming adventurers?
It's been almost two centuries since that first adventure of us, I stopped counting years long ago. Almost centuries since the moment I understood my heart belonged to Rose.
Rose, my fierce flower, my beautiful sister-in-arms... I still mourn her, even if we both knew her life was being consumed far quicker than mine.
She hailed from Numeria, a proud kellid woman and a proud swordfighter. Everything I am I owe it to her. Every bit of sanity, every bit of happiness... every bit of me.
We fought together for twenty years. Two decades of glory, tragedy and thrills. And then we hanged the weapons on a wall and retired to enjoy ourselves. Of all deeds we managed to do together, Argel was the one we were proudest.
Argel, my only son... he had Rose's eyes and spirit. A half-elf more human than most, as I has never been the best elven example. He grew up to become an adventurer himself. 'Like Ma and Pa', he would say.

My days with them were the happiest I've ever known... but it was a race against time.

I was still at the peak of my life the day Rose died with a smile on her face, tucked in our bed... and I became a broken man those days. I couldn't bear life without my Rose, I couldn't stand those rooms and walls empty of her sounds... and I fled. After forty years I took my weapons and fled.
In that moment I was surprised to find my senses honed and my aim sharp as always. Now I'm surprised of how much grief dulled them. I always lived my life the human way: fast and hard, burning all the way... and I returned to it.
I forgot, once again, that time ran slower for me than others. That my loved ones wouldn't live forever.

When I returned home, decades after I left, I found no trace of my little Argel. I discovered he left soon after me and since that day I tried to find him or his descendants, my grandchildren, during my travels and adventures.

Now it's been almost two centuries of life, more than a century since my Rose died, more than five decades since I returned home. I thought all my hope has washed away... but I found a trace, a clue if you will.

I heard a rumour of a half elven figure in Absalom, one sporting a sword that I know too well: Rose's sword. The sword she gave Argel, the sword I hope he has... or at least the sword he gave to his child.
I'll travel there now. To make amends. To say what I had to say a century ago. To attone for my human mind in an elven body
