The Elf drops his gear next to the boys cell and enters in after pulling some food and water from his bag (out of sight of the guards)...

He kneels next to Mazhir and offers the nourishment to the boy. Once the boy is feeling better, Vaelen says...

"Whatever you can tell us about your contact, everything that you can remember. The girl. Will you help us find her and protect her from these savages? We really don't care why you took the book but we may be able to speak to his Lordship and offer leniency if you can help us complete some work he has given us. Much of what happens now depends on you. Think carefully before you answer."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

Vaelen waits until it seems everyone is finished with breakfast, he then makes sure the tab is good with the already intimidated bartender, then heads out to find the best path to the jail. He cover his head so that he does not stand out and scans the crowd for anyone that may be following the group.

Vaelen comes down with all of his gear ready and grabs a light breakfast.

"Sorry about that chaps. That "Elf's" attitude got the best of me and I felt it was best to take myself out of the situation for a while. I'm all for a bit of investigative work and getting out of this city."

The Wood Elf says

"Yes that young man, I remember him and the girl as well. We should keep our eyes open for her as well. She is young, perhaps in her early twenties. A dark haired human with dark blue eyes and a bit chubby"

If this doesn't move a long soon, I'm going to drop.

Vaelen is opting out but will go along with the group...for now...:P

This seems to be going very slowly. Are we waiting on something?

The Elf is very diplomatic to the right people :)
Imagine a Goblin trying to make friends with a Xenophobic Dwarf...won't go so well.
When the snob snubs me then tells me he serves a human who claims dominion over MY forest, it's not going to go so well. :P

Not trying to rip apart the plot but it makes no sense to Vaelen. So what if some Petty Human Noble wants to send money to an Inn. It's not like the money is coming out of the 'High King's pocket or something. He claims it's his domain and wants us to investigate but if we're caught, he knows nothing.

Vaelen thinks it's his mission to keep tabs on the humans around the Forest anyway so he's happy to do it no matter how ridiculous it sounds to him. I"m half expecting him to end up in jail for insulting his royal highness but Vaelen doesn't understand that.

Tell your lordling Weiner to come to the Forest of Chondath and tell us he is our ruler.

Vaelen turns his back on the elf and laughs as he walks away. Over his shoulder, he says to the others...

"Yes, negotiate with the lord of Chondath, I will be in my room speaking with my imaginary friend Karsus, High Wizard of all Faerun if you need me."

The Wild Elf fails to hide his disdain for the city Elf and his reference to the Half-Elf Eawen in Iljak. He's also speaks a bit sharply to the lordling not appreciating being ignored after giving the traditional Elven greeting (or so he thought not knowing High Elf rules per se)

"How do we know what you say is true, self proclaimed hand-holder to this Lord Weiner?
How do we even know any of this is true or that you are not somehow involved?
More information is needed here...for instance, lets say you are telling the truth...
Are you saying an officer or servant in one of the Noble houses is skimming money or one of the Nobles themselves misdirecting it and the family is curious?
What is your Lord Weiners and Arrabar's business with it anyway?
Is it your lord who is being blackmailed?
Possibly, you are the one doing the questionable accounting.
We need names of those involved, dates, motives, suspects...
What of the boy, you still have him don't you?
What does he have to say?
How was he to meet this girl?
How did your 'inept' guards just happen to find them at the time of the meeting?

Also, since Vaelen was trying to pay attention, could he get a description of the girl and any identifying features?

Vaelen will accompany Mazhir and greet the Elf in his native tongue while attempting to assist the priest in being overly polite...

Valen's meditation is interrupted by the lack of sounds normally accompaning an Inn of this size. He quickly dons his traveling gear and makes his way stealthfully down the stairs to see if something is amiss.

Valen takes note of the book and the two young prisoners as well as any identifying features of the Half Orc and his group for future reference. He backs away back into the shadows and makes his way back to his seat. The Elf, being a bit out of his element isn't sure what all that has transpired is important or now, so he follows the lead of the the others.

"Seems to be a simple theft of some financial records. Since those seem to be legitimate law enforcement officers, I see no reason to get involved. Besides, what do I know of urban culture and the ways of those that live in cities?

Anything special about the book?

The Elf keeps a close eye on the Half-Orc and presses in behind the group of Mercenaries turned lawmen. If there is a good chance for Valen to lift the document or book from the leader, he will do so. Otherwise, he will follow the Dwarfs advice and get back to drinking....

Valen stands up quietly and moves to a position to kill from the shadows and also block the door if needs be....

He takes careful look at the Mandate the halforc shows and also the book. He tries to make sense of the situation. Wether the Orc speaks the truth about being commissioned as guards and what the importance of the book may be.

I like "Kegslayers" since we did save the Kegs by slaying rats. Something with the words 'Rats, Piss and Beer' would be cool but not sure how to fit it together...

The Elf smiled reassuringly at the Halfling female and says...

"No thank you my dear, I believe I am content."

Vaelen's eyes pass over each of the 'heroes' sharing the table of honor with him. His blank stare and facial expressions (for those familiar with Elves) speak volumes...

"How did I end up with this bunch?".

He continues to scan the crowd out of habit but otherwise says little....

I have a combat oriented Elvish Rogue built up.

Vaelen was a member of one of the many traveling bands of Wild Elves attempting to keep Human expansion into the forest of Chondath at bay. As an Inlfiltrator, he traveled the land with his brethren listening in to conversations around the human settlements until, one day, he met up with a group of adventures seeking to rid the City of Arrabar of their vermin infestation.

Vaelen and his wandering band worship Erevan Ilesere mostly but the other gods of the Elven pantheon are celebrated as well. Though keen on keeping the forest safe, Vaelen does not share the hatred of humans as some in the realm do. He is on good terms with the Treants of the Forest from whom he was given his namesake...Strongbow (Masterwork Longbow made of a very special variety of Yew).
