Uriel of Mendev's page

Greetings, meet Uriel of Mendev, member of the Order of the Sunrise Sword, Shining Knight Paladin of Iomedae. Astride his powerful steed, Ember, he rides to the Stolen Lands in search of a new adventure after having made his fortune plumbing the depths of the Emerald Spire!

(This is a re-skinning of a Paladin I played in a long-running Emerald Spire PBP that just stopped. I'll update the alias and such if I am selected. In the meantime, see his backstory below and follow the links above for character sheets!)

Backstory:

Uriel was born in Kenabres, on the front lines at the edge of the Worldwound. Early on, he learned the art of war and trained to fight the encroaching demons, joining the Order of the Sunrise Sword and making an oath to Iomedae. Uriel's days were filled with training and nights were spent running patrols, protecting the city from the deranged cultists and the occasional Dretch. But then the demons showed up at the highest levels in the Order! Uriel fled, first to escape, then to find a new purpose in life, ending up as an adventurer plumbing the depths of the Emerald Spire.

But that path came to an end as his companions went their separate ways. Still thirsting for glory and honor, Uriel found himself traveling far, his latest adventure taking him to the Stolen Lands in the nation of Brevoy.

...And those are some crap rolls--looks like 5's across the board unless you also give max hp for animal companion at 1st level.

Uriel is working on adapting his character from a long-running but indefinitely paused Emerald Spire online campaign...thinking Shining Knight Human Paladin...

I saw something about rolling for hp, taking max at level one, then minimum of average rounded up for higher levels, so here:

Hit Points Level 2: 1d10 ⇒ 6
Hit Points Level 3: 1d10 ⇒ 9
Hit Points Level 4: 1d10 ⇒ 7
Hit Points Level 5: 1d10 ⇒ 1 ==> 6

Loot table is updated:

- Ilyanaro: Western Star Ioun Stone, Wand of Magic Missiles
- Boudacia: Broken Staff w/Fading Magic Aura, Belt of Mighty Constitution +2, Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds
- Lonam: Potion of Invisibility, Amulet of Natural Armor +1
- Uriel: Adamantine +1 Longsword

Plus we all now have a Spire Transport Token.
Loot is 1480.875 gp each. Uriel will take 1480 gp and contribute the leftover to a good hot meal...

Uriel goes with the others to collect the mage, then heads over to the spire for transport.

Sounds good. I also suggest that each one of us carry a spire token, now that we have 4. Uriel will defer on the curing potion since he can lay on hands on himself as a swift action—should go to Ilyanaro or Boudacia. I’ll work on the loot sheet later tonight and update it in the link. I’ll include the reward for the wizard rescue if we get it by then too.

Uriel would be happy to give the belt to Boudacia, since he is getting a killer adamantine Longsword. We just need Ilyanaro to chime in and get whatever reward for rescuing the wizard, then I can finish up the loot chart and distribute our rewards...

”That’s right, we came here by magic touching the spire. Those stairs up must just be to a level we already cleared...” thinks Uriel.

”Sounds good to me, Ilyanaro,” says Uriel, ”I suppose the other wizard must be deeper in the levels below.”

”And I thought I could bring the cleansing fire...” mumbles Uriel under his breath.

After the searching and gathering the loot, he says, ”Well, I suppose that just leaves the stairs up i we found earlier, unless we want to move more levers.”

Uriel puts away his shield and starts moving towards the Pech's bag at Ilyarano's direction.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

It finally dawns on Uriel that the rocky sounds are some form of speech instead of rocks falling...and that he nearly derailed the whole conversation by charging in and trying to save the Pech from a non-existent rock slide.

He backs off a bit further after Boudacia's explanation, quietly saying "Sorry" to Ilyanaro. Red-faced, Uriel watches silently and tries to stay out of the way, not trusting his diplomatic skills being unable to speak the language.

"All I heard was rocks falling, what do you mean, Boudacia?" Uriel asks, turning to Ilyanaro and asking, "And how can you tell if a man has a good face?"

Uriel can't believe it! Ilyanaro is putting himself in the way of the cave-in, and the rocky sound is now getting louder, as if coming from two places!

Perception to see if the rock face is not collapsing: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Seeing the rock wall appear to be intact, Uriel slows down long enough for the words Ilyanaro speaks in (I assume) common to register. Confused, but not seeing anyone in immediate danger, he backs away slowly and watches the situation carefully.

Intelligence Check: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (1) - 2 = -1

Seeing the creature's mouth move and hearing some strange rock noises, Uriel yells, totally misinterpreting the situation, "It's a cave-in! I'll save you!" He rushes up and pulls the creature away from the crumbling wall and back into safety!

CMB to grab creature to pull it to safety: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26

Uriel approaches the creature cautiously, continuing his diplomatic overtures but not expecting a response from this obviously (to him) deaf creature. He tries to get into the Pech's field of vision from a distance, waving to get its attention. "Perhaps it can read lips," he thinks.

Uriel was speaking in common. If the creature does not respond in any way, he is going to assume it is deaf or at least hard of hearing.

Uriel will pause a moment more, waiting for a response. If there is none, he will sheath his sword and walk into the room, asking somewhat loudly, "Can you hear me? Do you need any help?"

It is unclear if he is talking to the Pech or what might be squirming in the bag...

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30

When he detects no evil, Uriel looks over his shoulder and asks, "What manner of creature is that? Should I try talking to him?

Uriel focuses his “detect Evil” ability in the creature. Since it hasn’t reacted to him yet, he pauses a moment in case any of the smart ones wants to identify the creature.

As the scene of the door opening and the chamber beyond renders before him, Uriel instinctually waits for the omnipresent voice of the narrator to read the ‘box text’ before he reacts...

Uriel will nod and head over to the other door. After checking it out and detecting for evil again, he waits for the others, then opens it.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

”Well, Ilyanaro, do we pull another lever or perhaps try the door to the west?” asks Uriel.

Uriel looks at the remains of the combat in the room and wipes his sword clean on the pelt of one of the leopards. "What was that thing? All I could tell was that it was evil and creepy."

At Ilyanaro's suggestion, Uriel goes and investigates the next door.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

If he doesn't hear anything or detect any traps, Uriel will open the door once the others are ready.

Uriel maintains a singular focus on destroying this evil creature. With Iomedae’s blessing, he continues to smite it with his glowing Longsword!

Longsword Smite Attack: 1d20 + 11 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 11 + 5 = 22
Longsword Smite Damage: 1d8 + 12 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 12 + 6 = 20
Longsword Smite Secondary Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 5 = 14
Longsword Smite Damage: 1d8 + 12 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 12 + 6 = 19

Uriel moves around the southern side of the column and approaches the evil outsider from the south. With the holy power coursing through him, he strikes mightily at the Div.

Move provokes from the leopard, smite bypasses DR, adds +5 to hit, and adds double level on the first hit added damage against evil outsiders.

Longsword Smite: 1d20 + 11 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 11 + 5 = 29
Smite Damage: 1d8 + 12 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 + 12 = 26

Startled at the otherworldly appearance of the one-eyed creature and the palpable evil emanating from it, Uriel draws his sword as his armor turns from gold to battle-grey, saying ”I smite thee in Iomedae’s name!”

Unwilling to leave his stunned companions vulnerable, Uriel does not close with the freakish creature, but instead steps to the southwest to flank the blue-collared great cat with Lonam, taking a mighty swing with his enchanted Longsword.

(Smite Evil swift action, draw sword move action, 5 foot step—token assist please, then standard action to attack the blue collared cat.)

Longsword Flanking Attack: 1d20 + 11 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 11 + 2 = 21
Longsword Damage: 1d8 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15

Bonus AC against smite target = +4 deflection, plus bonuses to hit and damage.

Uriel will give Lonam or Boudacia a chance to listen at the door if they like, then open it.

DM, feel free to have Boudacia check or wait for Lonam to give it a shot...

Sheathing his sword, Uriel says quietly to the others, ”I hear something behind this door, but I can’t make it out. Does anyone else want to listen?”

He will step back to let others listen if they want to.

Uriel looks around for Lonam after this Trimbor fella shows up. If he has been following us around this whole time, Trimbor may be the perfect addition to the party as our stealthy scout...

"That worked," says Uriel, smiling, "Let's go."

Uriel starts up his detect evil and scans the hallway as he moves forward to the doors for any traps. If the doors are thin enough, he may be able to detect if there is evil on the other side.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Blinking slowly, Uriel realizes this lever position is not all that helpful. Looking at Ilyanaro, he asks, ”Want me to pull it all the way down?”. Assuming the answer is yes, Uriel will move the black lever to the “down” position.

Everyone has moved except Boudacia and Wayne, and she hasn't posted for over a week. Should we assume that they move over to join us and Uriel pulls the lever?

Uriel nods seriously, then waits for everyone to join him in the lever room. He will then pull the black lever from the "up" position to the "middle" position.

Having learned his lesson (at least for the moment, Uriel stands by the levers and waits for further instruction. He looks to Ilyanaro and says, ”What now?”

That’s why I was waiting to have Uriel pull the lever—since Ilyanaro was off the platform...

Going...going...gone...

Uriel finally makes the connection and pushes the black lever to the “up” position, saying, ”Uh, sorry about that...” as some of his companions come back onto view. His face starts turning red underneath the helmet.

T minus two rounds until Uriel’s reasoning capability engages fully and he pulls the lever back (or DM says the time has passed if nobody else wants to do anything)...

The cogs in Uriel’s brain turn slowly, as he reasons out what has happened. Lever reset in 3 rounds...

Sorry, that is what I get for having multiple characters whose name starts with U. Stormstrider is right, of course, it was a typo.

Uriel stands at the lever, somewhat dumbfounded, just now realizing what Ilyanaro meant by the “turning locations”. Slowly it dawns on him what has happened and what he needs to do to fix the situation (move the black lever back up to where it was before), which he will do in number of rounds: 1d4 ⇒ 4.

Intelligence Check: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (3) - 2 = 1

”Turning area, what’s that?” thinks Undari, befuddled as usual by part of Ilyanaro’s technical speech. At least he understands the part of the request about the lever, and he walks directly over to the black lever and pulls on it—> 1=move up, 2=move down.

Lever Randomizer: 1d2 ⇒ 2

”Perhaps the other wizard escaped this way?” suggests Uriel, seeing the destroyed automaton.

Probably time to start pulling levers unless you want to go back to the stairs leading up in the southwest room first.

Assuming he doesn’t detect any evil or see anything dangerous in the hallway, Uriel will move north to the corner of the hallway and look to the east (token assist please).

Unless someone else wants to jump in and search, Uriel will go ahead and open the door.

After pausing a moment to get his detect evil up and running, Uriel will open the door and draw his sword.

Let’s assume that Uriel, with the help of the smart ones, eventually realizes this hallway leads to areas already explored and heads back to the double doors to the north.

Uriel moves to the new double doors to the north and checks them out. When the others are ready, he will open them. (traveling this week, so token assist please).

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

While he is waiting for the others to react, Uriel looks at the door to the south, checking it for traps and evil and such. If he finds nothing, he will go ahead and open the door unless someone else tells him to stop.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Uriel shrugs and moves to the next portcullis, carving a person-sized hole in it as well.

”Which door next? The southern single door or the double door to the north?” Uriel asks.

Uriel shrugs, a bit puzzled by the smart people conversation, but none of them actually asked him to stop attacking, so he takes another pair of swings at the construct.

Longsword Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12
Longsword Damage: 1d8 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18
