Appearance:
Umberto the Unavoidable is a tall man with long brown hair, a very attractive face, and the smile and confidence that comes from knowing the women find him swoon-worthy. He dresses in a utilitarian breastplate of battered steel, has a fine cloak of silver chased purple silk, lined with black wool, and a well-tended darkwood shield. His sword has a basket hilt, and is quite well made and balanced, with a blade of Mithral chased with Tian lettering. His irises sometimes look like windows into the deepest void...giving him a subtle air of mystery and power that women find enticing. When he is in motion, with a blade in his hand, he has the relentlessness of a Korvosan sword-master, and even by their repute, he is unusually quick on his feet and hard to avoid. He is no mere lunk-headed swordsman - he is capable of giving disquisitions from his training at the Theumanexis College on topics as diverse as naturalism, the mathematical arts as made substance with stone and leverage, and the intricacies of casting spells. Background:
Umberto de Cosima, called The Unavoidable The youngest son of one of Korvosa's Dock Families, he was sent to the Theumanexus College to give him discipline and see him better himself, and to see if his talents for magic could be awakened. He lasted two semesters, and was barely able to assist his lab partners performing cantrips. What he did excel at was winning fights, as he came into his growth spurt late. He had an aggressive spirit, a strong arm, and the basic familiarity with weapons that comes to younger sons of the nobility. Eventually, to the disappointment of his father, he convinced his parents that spending their money on Theumanexus College was a waste of his time and their gold, though the only solid discipline he managed was a foundational study of naturalism, cataloging species. His father's disappointment required that he make himself scarce from Korvosa...but his knowledge of both bladework and the theoretical aspects of magic meant that there was a place for him to exercise his talents - the Pathfinder Society. Within the Society, he was approached by the Paracountess Zarta Dralneen, who saw in his mix of magical training, martial abilities and keen eye for observation a possible tool. She sent him to Amara Li to find out as much about the Lantern Lodge and their operations in Absalom as he could. He has performed missions for Amara Li, and tendered reports on them to the Paracountess the entire time. In the course of his work with the Society, he has come into possession of a small keep in Varisia, and through its resources, he secures two trade routes from Korvosa to Molthune, gaining no small measure of personal prestige in doing so. His items: His mithral longsword is a gift to him after his service to Amara Li for his services rendering a proper burial with the dead of the Goblinblood War, and assisting in the actions of Way of the Kirin. Amara Li also noted his skill with spellcraft, and gave him the Wayfinder of Sho-len Urro, which is nearly unique in its ability to cast Detect Magic and Guidance from the same device. His shield is a gift from his family, and his cloak has been provided for him by the Paracountess, who, seeing Amara Li's gift of the Wayfinder, augmented his meager stores of magic with Gloves of the Cheating Apprentice, and the Circlet of Great Intelligence. |
