Young Tsukotarra was thought to be the prodigy of his mountain village near the Shrine of the Sacred Tempest. By age five he could somehow tap into his ancestral abilities to cast a spell to disrupt undead, and by age seven he could produce flames from his hands at will. Many in the village though him to be blessed by Hei Fang himself.
Then Pathfinders came to the village and revealed that the shrine was overcome with quipploth and all the priests corrupted. They defeated the corrupted priests, and soon a new priest of Hei Fang was sent to rebuild the temple and its clergy. This new priest spent no time determining that Tsukotarra would become his first apprentice in his effort to rebuild the temple. Young Tsukotarra had no say in this matter.
For years, Tsukotarra was told to meditate on Hei Fang, and was subjected to terrible punishments when he failed to do so. His demanding but cruel master was determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past by ensuring that all his disciples had steel resolve and willpower to resist the effects of any future Quipploth invasions. However, in his lessons on inner strength, disicpline, and meditation, the old priest failed to impress upon young Tsukotarra any of the virtues or divine truths of Hei Fang. And so, instead of learning to tap into his god's divine power, Hei Fang just kept delving deeper and deeper into his own psyche, eventually learning how to move objects without touching them and shield himself from attacks.
Eventually, after years of little to no progress in his divine schooling, the priest, under the effects of one too many gourds of local wine, became infuriated with Tsukotarra and began beating him much harsher than usual. Angry, scared, and confused, the young Tengu managed to still his mine long enough to psychically throw his former master down a well. Then, knowing that the town would not understand, he ran away. He eventually found his way on to a human ship acting as a 'jinx eater' (whatever that was). He remembered how the Pathfinders had saved the temple from years earlier and managed to make his way to Absolom and the grand lodge.
