Divine Spellcasting: An onmyoji’s spellcasting ability comes from divine rather than psychic power. As a divine caster, the onmyoji’s spells use verbal components instead of thought components, and somatic components instead of emotional components, and she uses an ofuda as a divine focus. Ofudas are scrolls with holy writings written on parchment, cloth, or wood (having the same cost as a wooden holy symbol) or metal (having the same cost as a silver holy symbol). This ability alters spellcasting.

Spiritual Resistance (Su): An onmyoji’s phantom provides her with protection from supernatural forces. While the phantom is confined within the onmyoji’s consciousness (not stranded on the Ethereal Plane or fully manifested), it grants her a +2 bonus on saving throws against the spell-like and supernatural abilities of fey, outsiders, and incorporeal undead. At 6th level and every 6 levels thereafter, this bonus increases by 1 (to a maximum of +5 at 18th level). This ability replaces shared consciousness and fused consciousness.

Etheric Tether (Su):
At 1st level, a spiritualist can force the phantom to manifest in an area around her by pushing the phantom’s consciousness though the veil of ethereal essence, allowing it to fully manifest in either ectoplasmic or incorporeal form. Whenever her manifested phantom takes enough damage to send it back to the Ethereal Plane, as a reaction to the damage, the spiritualist can sacrifice any number of her hit points without using an action. Each hit point sacrificed in this way prevents 1 point of damage dealt to the phantom. This can prevent the phantom from being sent back to the Ethereal Plane.

This tether is limited. When the phantom is fully manifested, it and the spiritualist must remain within 50 feet of one another for the phantom’s manifestation to stay stable with little to no concentration on the part of the spiritualist. The spiritualist can stretch the limited tether, but only when the phantom is in ectoplasmic form. When a spiritualist starts her turn and her ectoplasmic phantom is more than 50 feet away from her (but closer than 100 feet), the spiritualist must concentrate on the link as a full-round action that provokes attacks of opportunity or the ectoplasmic phantom immediately returns to the Ethereal Plane and cannot be summoned from that plane for 24 hours. This concentration can be interrupted as if it were a spell. Treat this effect’s spell level as equal to 1 + 1 per 10 feet farther than 50 feet that the phantom is from the spiritualist (maximum spell level 6th). If the tether is interrupted or the check fails, the phantom immediately snaps back into the consciousness of its spiritualist master.

If the ectoplasmic phantom is ever more than 100 feet away from its spiritualist, or the incorporeal phantom is ever 50 feet away from the spiritualist or outside of line of effect from the spiritualist for more than 1 round per spiritualist level the spiritualist possesses, the tether is automatically broken; the phantom immediately returns to the Ethereal Plane and can’t be summoned from that plane for 24 hours.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Dutiful Strike (Su): When a creature makes an attack against the phantom’s master, the phantom gains a +2 bonus on attack rolls against that target, and deals damage against that target as if the phantom were one size category larger. For the purposes of this ability, an attack includes any harmful spell targeting the spiritualist master of whose area or effect includes the spiritualist master. Dutiful strike lasts for 1 minute, until another creature attacks the phantom’s spiritualist master (at which point this effect transfers to the new attacker), or until the attacking creature is reduced to fewer than 0 hit points, whichever occurs first.

Link (Su): A spiritualist and her phantom share a mental link that allows for communication across distances (as long as they are on the same plane). This communication is a free action that can be performed even when it isn’t the spiritualist’s turn, but the spiritualist and the phantom must both be conscious to communicate in this way. This allows the spiritualist to give orders to her phantom at any time. Magic items interfere with a spiritualist’s connection to her phantom; as a result, the spiritualist and her phantom share magic item slots. For example, if the spiritualist is wearing a magic ring, her phantom can wear only one magic ring. In the case of a conflict, the items worn by the spiritualist remain active, and those worn by the phantom become dormant. The phantom must possess the appropriate appendages to utilize a magic item.

Share Spells (Su): The spiritualist can cast a spell with a target of “you” on her phantom (as a spell with a range of touch) instead of on herself. A spiritualist can cast spells from the spiritualist spell list on her phantom even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the phantom’s type (outsider). This ability does not allow the phantom to share abilities that aren’t spells, even if they function like spells.

Full Manifestation Forms:
Each time she fully manifests her phantom, the spiritualist must choose whether to manifest the phantom in either ectoplasmic or incorporeal form. The phantom gains the statistics presented on Table 1–11: Manifested Phantom’s Base Statistics, modified by the phantom’s emotional focus and by the type of manifestation the spiritualist chooses.

Ectoplasmic: When the spiritualist manifests her phantom in ectoplasmic form, the phantom gains the following abilities.

Damage Reduction: A phantom manifested in ectoplasmic form has DR 5/slashing. When the spiritualist reaches 5th level, the phantom gains DR 5/magic. At 10th level, the damage resistance increases to 10/magic. At 15th level, it increases to 15/magic, and at 20th level, the damage reduction becomes DR 15/—.

Phase Lurch (Su): A phantom in ectoplasmic form has the ability to pass through walls or material obstacles. In order to use this ability, it must begin and end its turn outside whatever wall or obstacle it’s moving through. An ectoplasmic phantom can’t move through corporeal creatures with this ability, and its movement speed is halved while moving through a wall or obstacle. Any surface it moves through is coated with a thin, silvery mucus that lingers for 1 minute.

Incorporeal: When the spiritualist chooses to manifest the phantom in incorporeal form, the phantom appears within 30 feet of the spiritualist as a ghostly apparition. It gains the incorporeal subtype (Pathfinder RPG Bestiary 301), including a deflection bonus to AC equal to its Charisma modifier. Since it isn’t an undead creature, it takes no damage from holy water or positive energy. Unlike other incorporeal creatures, an incorporeal phantom can’t attack corporeal creatures, except to deliver touch-attack spells using the deliver touch spell ability. An incorporeal manifested phantom can make slam attacks against other incorporeal creatures as if it were in ectoplasmic form.

Backstory:

Current Year: 4711

By 4695 AR, Lonjiku Kaijitsu and his wife Atsuii of the Sandpoint nobility were in the midst of something of a cold war, for Atsuii had born a half-elf son called Tsuto several years prior. Nevertheless, they had two daughters born afterwards - Ameiko in 4689, and Tsukiko in 4695. From an early age, Tsukiko proved to be everything her older sister wasn’t - she was quiet and thoughtful, where Ameiko tended to be fiery and impulsive. Tsukiko spent much of her early years called (affectionately) “the little ghost of the Kaijitsus” for her paleness and somewhat distant attitudes.

To further contrast Ameiko, who had a strong rebellious streak, Tsukiko’s willfulness was well-hidden, and she presented herself to Lonjiku as a very submissive daughter - something he appreciated, even as she revealed some of her selfishness and willfulness with her mother and sister, who she liked more - though of course she respected her parents equally.

When Tsukiko was seven years old, she caught Ameiko sneaking out of the manor, but rather than report it to their parents, she listened to Ameiko’s story and decided that her older sister was in the right with regards to her goals. Ameiko wished to reconcile Tsuto, the (half-)brother they had never known, and their father.

Though this was her first true act of rebellion against her parents, it would not be Tsukiko’s last. However, its nature did inform the nature of her future rebelliousness - when she rebelled, it would be for a good cause and very subtly, never allowing the rest of Sandpoint to see the Kaijitsus’ family matters.

Unfortunately, Ameiko’s reunion with Tsuto went poorly, which caused Ameiko to run away from home. Tsukiko was devastated, blaming herself for Ameiko’s flight, but kept silent - she would not have lied had she been asked about Ameiko, but neither of her parents seemed to think her worth questioning.

Just a bare few months later, Sandpoint was thrown into chaos when the first bodies began showing up - the Chopper, a serial killer, now stalked the streets of Sandpoint. More immediately to Tsukiko’s life, Atsuii died after falling off of a cliff - while the ongoing murders were a tragedy, her mother was dead.

The funeral’s date was set, and both Ameiko and Tsuto were to return for the burial, but mere months after the Chopper’s murders came to an end, Sandpoint Chapel burned to the ground, ending the lives of Nualia and Ezakien Tobyn, as well as numerous others.

Thus, the burial of Atsuii was a dark, grim day for everyone involved, though the bright sunshine seemed to mock the very idea that it was a funeral. At the funeral, Tsukiko caught the first sight of her older half-brother she’d ever had. Tsuto was in a rage, and all but accused Lonjiku of throwing their mother off of the cliff. He stormed off in a rage.

Tsukiko was shocked at the accusation, but could not convince herself it was wholly false. She began investigating, but after her father beat her for asking about her mother too probingly, Tsukiko retreated into the manor’s depths, barely leaving the house more than twice a month.

In the depths of her despair, Tsukiko discovered an old scroll - one from Minkai, the ancestral home of the Kaijitsu family. Although at first it was tremendously difficult to understand, Tsukiko gradually became more fluent with Minkaian and was able to discern its characters’ meanings. It was a text about a path that allowed someone to summon the spirits of the dead, credited to a priest of a god called Tsukiyo.

This would allow Tsukiko to get the truth of her mother’s death! She just had to fully decode the text’s difficult prose and poetry. Tsukiko began to devote more and more time to her study of the text.

Of course, when Ameiko left with several of her like-minded friends, when Tsukiko was nine, she realized that her self-absorption and attempts to get her mother’s advice had left her sister essentially alone and friendless in the Kaijitsu manor, especially with their bitter father. Once more, Tsukiko blamed herself, and began praying in the ways she could to the god that she had read of, with whom she shared much of her name - Tsukiyo.

It took another year, but Ameiko returned, wealthy from her adventures, but also with a darkness in her eyes that she’d never had before. Refusing to move back into the manor, Ameiko bought the Rusty Dragon, where she set up a tavern and inn. Tsukiko began visiting her older sister regularly, and grew to enjoy the warm and adventurous feel of the inn. She even became friendly with many of the regulars.

Throughout it all, Tsukiko continued her studies into becoming what she had learned was called an “onmyoji.” For the first time since her mother had died, Tsukiko was reasonably happy. Unfortunately, the very next year saw the Swallowtail Festival attacked by goblins - worse, goblins that had been let in by Tsuto! Furthermore, at nine years of age, Tsukiko was now an orphan - Tsuto had murdered Lonjiku and abducted Ameiko. Fortunately, she’d been rescued by the Heroes of Sandpoint, but Tsukiko was tremendously shaken by this turn of events.

Thus, at twelve, Tsukiko moved into the Rusty Dragon with her older sister, though she returned to the manor more frequently than Ameiko, to learn more about her path. A few months passed before Ameiko confronted Tsukiko about what the younger woman was doing. Finally finding a time to tell her, Tsukiko revealed her plans, now more or less defunct, to discover the truth of Atsuii’s death.

Ameiko, in a moment of emotional rawness, scolded her for digging up memories that were better off left forgotten, but Tsukiko countered that she now felt called to become an onmyoji. The two had on again off again arguments about her path, but Tsukiko stood firm, and Ameiko eventually grew to complain simply out of habit.

At fifteen, Tsukiko began preparing the ritual that would call up her mother’s phantom, and bind them together. She needed to improvise somewhat, because many of the materials considered sacred in Tian Xia were incredibly rare in Varisia, but in a night of grand ceremony, the young woman summoned forth Atsuii’s phantom, and the two were bound together.
