Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet
Hikonaga wrote:
I want to apologize to everyone for the impact my real-life has had on your entertainment. You at least deserved to hear from me sooner, honestly.

Take care of you and yours. Honestly, contacting my games would be the last thing I'd worry about if my wife was ill.

FWIW, I work for a health insurance company. If your doctor requests a medical management review and lists out the reason why the 3 procedures will certainly not work, you might have a shot at getting them to skip in line. Insurance companies don't like spending money on things that will certainly not work.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

I’m still here. I didn’t realize paizo ate my reply a few weeks ago.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

What if I don’t have etiquette? Will sincerity work?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Devious. Is there anyone else nearby who can help lift? Otherwise I’ll wait until tonight for intervention and then roll.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Is there an incentive to lift vs. Roll? If not, we should roll because we’ve met that requirement.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Athletics, 3k2: 3d10 ⇒ (2, 6, 7) = 15 13. What’s the TN for my side?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Hojo rushes to the fallen timber, calling out to Hokonga. Help me lift this!

Whats the roll for lifting something heavy?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Hojo gathers his things, strapping his quiver and bow to his back and wrapping his now mostly dry oilskins around him to make a barrier from the driving rain. You only get a quick glance at the bow, but it's very well cared for, especially for something owned by a starving Ronin. It'd certainly trade for more food than he could catch shooting game.

Despite the rain and his obvious hunger, Hojo has a cheerful disposition. He indicates Nakadai. My friend and I are followers of the great Sun Tao and decided to seek better opportunity for food. How is it that you all came to be traveling together?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Hojo sweeps the spent leaves into his mouth, rises, bows deeply to the honored samauri and pays for his tea.

He turns to the other ronin. We’re continuing east if you care to join us. In these troubled times, there is safety in numbers. As we entered town I saw a willow grove that we could reach before nightfall. It could provide shelter from the rain.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Hojo nods to Inoue. Back to the rain, then?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Hojo thanked the musician graciously, but offered a suggestion. Your offer of a private room is kind, and the comfort would be appreciated...but perhaps our honored guests he indicated the Dadoji [b[Are more deserving of these amenities?[/b]

He hoped that moving the Dadoji would defuse the situation and shield the staff from their boorish behavior. With hopes, they may even sleep off their booze.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Help me out a little with the politics around this. Hojo reveres samurai, but has likely never met more than one in person. That said, he understands his place in society vs. theirs. The Dadoji are almost certainly about to start acting dishonorably, and allowing that to happen is in its own way dishonorable...but so is acting inappropriately toward your social betters. What's the lesser evil here? Would a strict adherent to the code of Bushido choose to accept the musician's offer to defuse the conflict (at the expense of the rest of the patrons and staff) or would he politely try to intercede? Is there a way for him to confront the Dadoji without automatically offending their honor?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Hojo scoots is to allow the newcomers more space. When I was younger, I believed famine and drought went hand in hand. My hopes for this rain have been sadly unfulfilled. Whatever it is that’s slowing the growth of the fields, it’s not thirst. He regards the assembly as warmly as he can muster through his shivers.

Which way did you come from? We were hoping to leave tonight and travel east, but I’d hate to retrace your steps. We’re trading service for food, you see, and we’ve received all this village can spare. If you’re moving west doing the same, we can attest that there’s nothing for you behind us. We might both be better off traveling south.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Hojo shivered and sipped his tea, a deep pain in his belly. He and his companion were trying to outrun the famine, trading their labor to anyone with even a slight surplus. Their plan was only marginally successful and they had tapped the resources of this little village. As tempting as it was to stay and shelter from the rain, it’d mean going to sleep with an empty belly and losing a whole day of travel to the next stop.

If they tarried too much longer, they might not have the strength to make it much further.

He continued to fill his belly with the warm water. It did little to cut the hunger, but it was better than nothing.

As the other ronin entered the tea house, Hojo regarded them suspiciously. Not all were as stalwart and honorable as he was. Still, they might have food, and traveling in a group was much safer.

Existing players: does it look like you’ve eaten in the last day or so?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

That's fine, no worries. But a little direction on what Hojo and Nakadai's goals are would help give us some motivation, maybe?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

No, no clue. I was just stalling...

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

That settles it, then. Hojo was glad that their mission was self-directed. Had he given his word that they'd accomplish this task, he'd walk through the ocean to accomplish it.

What are we doing here? What are we trying to accomplish. I keep stalling to figure out what our mission is, but I have no idea.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Hojo let out a long, low sigh. It's getting worse...and this music is so pleasant. Perhaps our journey can wait until tomorrow?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Hojo shrugged. There is a difference between prediction and control, I suppose. I can’t stand this rain. Moist strings are slippery. Still, we have a job to do, and there’s no sense in delay if there’s no sign of stopping. We should consult our map while we have shelter. Do you know how much longer we have to journey?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Hojo sipped the weak tea as he tried to dry off a bit by the fire. Realizing that he benefited far more from the steam and the warmth of the cup than from the taste of tea, he held the cup close to his body as he looked out the window at the downpour. "I don't want to delay our journey any further" he said to Nakadai "But I hate to travel in this rain. Do you think it'll clear up soon?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

DID YOU ORDER THE CODE RED”

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Thanks! Not sure how I got that turned around on this. Five years of exclusively playing PBTA games, I guess.

Storyteller, other than that, am I good? If so, I’ll copy it over to my profile today,

Nakadai, shall we be traveling companions?

Also, just so no one worries, Hojo isn’t Lawful Stupid. He just reveres honesty and has never really had to test the tenets in real life. I don’t know if L5R let’s you buy off disadvantages, but if so I expect he’ll find himself in situations where being honest and being good are at cross purposes.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Ok, let me try this again. I see I also misread how XP and Ronin school works so I was clocking in at a much too high XP. Is this correct now?

I'm not sure how to buy gear for my guy, so some things are left blank.

Is he ok? Will he be outclassed? Hikonaga is clocking 6k3 for his bow.

Nakadai, since we're both "Sun Tao" ronin, maybe we could start out traveling together?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

That’s very helpful, thank you

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Ok, but I think I need more guidance that that. Reflexes should be my best stat, I presume but should I dump all my xp there or spread it out and raise a few attributes to 3? How much should I save for skills? How broad should my skills be?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

My recent experience is in PBTA games, where there is mechanically no difference between a ranged fighter and a melee fighter. In D&D it’s very hard to make a predominately ranged character work.

Does an archer work well in L5R 4e? That could be fun, provided that it’s a viable build. Failing that, a deft swordsman would work too. I’m also open to suggestions for other builds.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Ditto!

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Hello! I'm seeing that 4th edition is quite a bit different than the version I played nearly 20 years ago. I'm having a bit of a hard time puzzling out character creation.

I'm hoping I might be able to get some help building a character around my concept.

Here are my answers to the 20 questions, which might help guide what directions I should take the character, what skills to buy, if I should take a Ronin path or go freeform, etc.

20Q:
WHAT CLAN DOES YOUR CHARACTER BELONG TO?
True Ronin

WHAT FAMILY DOES YOUR CHARACTER BELONG TO?
None

IS YOUR CHARACTER A BUSHI, A SHUGENJA, OR A COURTIER?
Bushi

HOW WOULD OTHERS DESCRIBE YOUR CHARACTER’S APPEARANCE?
Cheerful, but focused. A closely cropped haircut. He takes himself very seriously even when others might not.

WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER’S PRIMARY MOTIVATION?
Although it's clearly impossible, he wants the honor of a samurai. Even if he can't be revered in society as a samurai, if he makes a difference in someone's life then THEY will think of him highly.

WHO IS THE PERSON YOUR CHARACTER TRUSTS MOST IN THE WORLD?
His older brother Kuga. Kuga has recently turned to bandrity to support himself and his wife, a fact which dismays Hojo.

WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER’S GREATEST STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS?
Hojo's greatest strength is his desire to help others. Sacrifice of what's right for him in the place of what's right for someone else is often his greatest weakness as well as he frequently makes choices that put him into danger.

WHAT DOES YOUR CHARACTER THINK OF BUSHIDO?
Hojo reveres Bushido and tries to live up to the code as closely as possible. Jin is the trait he most closely tries to embody.

WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER’S OPINION OF HIS CLAN?
He has nothing but contempt for Clan Ronin, those who had what he dreams of and cast it away. He is far more tolerant of True Ronin like himself, those who find themselves on the outside as mere accident of birth.

IS YOUR CHARACTER MARRIED?
He is not, though he is sweet on Jimyoin Izuko, a young lady from his village.

DOES YOUR CHARACTER HAVE ANY PREJUDICES?
He despises Clan Ronin, for the reasons stated above. They could have been great, failed and then didn't even have the decency to die afterwards.

TO WHOM DOES YOUR CHARACTER OWE THE MOST
LOYALTY?
He is loyal to the people who need his help. He'll do anything to protect anyone weaker than he.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER’S FAVORITE AND LEAST
FAVORITE THINGS?
He has a corn husk doll given to him by a Samurai that passed through the village when he was a child. It's barely scraps now, but he carries it wherever he goes. He hates water chestnuts, though he misses the days when he had the luxury of being picky about what food to eat. Given the chance, he'd eat a thousand water chestnuts.

DOES YOUR CHARACTER HAVE ANY RECURRING
MANNERISMS?
Hojo has a lot of nervous energy, constantly playing with his hands or worrying a river stone he keeps in his pocket.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER’S EMOTIONS?
He is a generally positive person, even in the face of adversity. He tries to slip into his "game face" when he's doing "samurai things" but it's hard to take him seriously. This often infuriates him and his responses often fuel the ridicule.

HOW WOULD YOUR CHARACTER HANDLE A
SUBORDINATE’S IMPROPER BEHAVIOR?
Bushido is everything to Hojo, and he'd attempt to correct someone who acts outside of the code.

HOW WOULD YOUR CHARACTER’S PARENTS DESCRIBE
HIM?
Kind, but foolish. They'd never EVER admit it, but they'd prefer him to go into bandrity where he could live a comfortable (if precarious) life as opposed to his mad goals to help others.

WHAT IS YOUR CHARACTER’S HIGHEST AMBITION?
If you asked him directly, he'd say "To help others and relieve suffering in this world" but if you were to look into his mind the answer would be "to be a Samurai." It is a sad thing to have an impossible ambition.

HOW RELIGIOUS IS YOUR CHARACTER?
He pays lip-service to religion, but never truly believed.

HOW WILL YOUR CHARACTER DIE?
Protecting someone else. He would trade his life for just a few moments of someone else's.

Mechanically, I don't have strong feelings. He can fill a role that is lacking. Is this campaign mostly social, mostly combat? Do we need an agile sword fighter? A talented archer? A social wizard who can smooth over problems?

But yeah, any help guiding my character would be a plus!

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Should we call it then? I think we're down to a skeleton crew. This was a fun experiment, but I don't think this is the best environment/pace for this sort of game.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

I call out Friend Scrub Bot...do you have a flood light installed?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

I fumble around for a lightswitch.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

I enter first to look around.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

I turn back to Doc. What now, team leader?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Get nods a little bit. Seems reasonable. I didn't want to presume what the computer gave or did not give to you.

Get opens the door, or at least doesn't his best to open the door.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

GET approaches the first door and stands next to it. Commander, do you have the key?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Still here, friend Computer!

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Far be it for me to go against the team leader, but the Computer specifically said that I must accompany the Scrub-bot. Perhaps you misspoke instead of directly contradicting the wishes of the Computer? Clearly you meant that myself and friend Robot will enter the room together before opening the room to the rest of the group.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Ah, but team leader wanted me to go first. You’re an important part of the unit cohesion.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Scrub-bot and I will enter the unit first, clear it with the door closed, then open the door and let you all in to clean.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Get followed dutifully behind

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Having cleaned up all the treason, I salute Doc. Ready to be escorted to our mission location, sir!

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

He was talking a lot about "deals." Friend computer provides all we need, so everything is a "deal." I can only imagine he was discussing treason.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Get quickly scoops up the corn chips with his bush broom and dumps them into a nearby incinerator, dodging away from the flames that are enlarged by the excessive oil content.

Thank you, friend None, for your quick thinking. You saved all of us. says Get, But you should not have endangered Computer property like that. The Scrub-Bot is more valuable than any of us. Had he been damaged, I would have had to execute you for misuse of a bot...but thank you.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

You have extra lives. We all get 6 clones.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Get promptly drops the bag, then promptly drops Corn with a shot from his laser pistol
What do I roll?
He tricked me into touching contraband! I never would have committed treason on purpose.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Get looks back at Corn with a blank look. Nothing he’s saying means anything to him.

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Get looked at the bag.
I assume there’s nothing outwardly treasonous about the bag?

Hojo Kosaku: True Ronin Character Sheet

Get takes his barrel, attaches it to his gun, dons his gloves and goggles and hoists his vacuum.

Ready, sir! Do you still want Scrub Bot and myself to enter each unit alone to scout ahead of time?
