In the church of Xan Yae there is a well-known but little mentioned sect devoted to delivering vengeance on behalf of those with willing purses but deficient skill at arms. Tom Gendry was born into this sect. Trained from birth to be a killer for hire, Tom reconciled his good nature with his family's violent profession by only taking on jobs where the target of Xan Yae's vengeance was a true monster. His family pressured him more and more to take on more morally grey jobs in the service to Xan Yae. Eventually his sister locked him and a merchant whose cart had splashed mud on the wrong noble into a hut together, threatening to not let Tom out until he'd "toughened up." Tom spent the better part of a day quietly drilling a hole in the wall of the hut before slipping away from his sister and the rest of his family for good. Now a bounty hunter, Tom still delivers Xan Yae's vengeance to those he feels are deserving.
