BACKGROUND
Timbur was always a big boy. The nasty old gossips in his northern-Taldor village whispered that his mother had died in childbirth because Timbur had ripped her in two on the way out. Timbur's father never disputed the claim, but then again, Timbur's father never could really rub two clues together.
Alas, Timbur himself was always as dumb as the proverbial post, and he looked like his face had been beaten in with it, too. To make matters worse, he was never altogether careful with his massive frame, creating several accidents around the village through sheer clumsiness. "Timburrrr!" the other boys would shout as something else around him went crashing down, and the nickname stuck, so much, that Timbur can't even remember what his real name is. Yet even though the villagers would sneer and gossip about the time he got a bit carried away during a festival dance and put his head through the tavern wall, they also remember the time he used his bulk to intercept the run-away wagon seconds before it ran over old Mrs. Grinstack. They gossip about the time he put a rock through the mayor's new window, but also remember the time he held up the collapsing schoolhouse roof long enough for all the children to get out. He was especially fond of children, always gentle with them, and keen to look out for them. Not a single goodwife of Lyon's Brook would trust him to carry home a bag of apples, but each and every one would send them off to play with Timbur without a second thought.
When he grew too big for the village anymore, he hired himself out as a merchant guard, and learned the sword from other mercenaries. He could always hunt as well as any village man, track game, and take care of himself in the wild. While he can make it on his own, he prefers to tie himself to others, offering them protection in exchange for them doing all the necessary thinking.
It was just such an arrangement that led him to the Casmaron desert: a fellow traveler, met along the road, who needed a strong arm and steady shield to assist in his/her own adventures.
