About Thirrion Velding

appearance

background:
In the kingdom of Taldor, Magic has fallen to the way side for a… scientific approach to things(partly due to most of the populace having little to no magical gifts). Guilds of tinkerers and inventors, there are many Guilds involved with remaking the workings of magic by logic and mechanical application. There tiny robots and machines are wonders to all, even wizards. More than any realm, this Kingdom has proven that science can be just as powerful as magic. And that both are more powerful when combined.

The Clockwork Captains, a relatively new guild in this area, has rapidly grown to prominence as one of the leading Guilds in the kingdom. There Grand Captain, Varian Sterling, a Genius among Genius’s. His mechanical creations and exploits are the inspirations of thousands of aspirants, one such aspirant named Thirrion Velding. A boy of age 6 when we saw his first clockwork creations at the hands of Varian, the lad was instantly struck with awe and an insatiable desire to have his own. After the fair Thirrion Would return home with as much scrap metal and bit as he could, whenever he could and would sit and tinker the days away while others stayed outside to play. In the end, this dedication paid off, for at the young age of 11, he had created his first clockwork machine. A little windup toy, that not only walked but shot peas out of its arms, becoming the second youngest inventor ever, losing out to only Varian, who had created his first work at age of 9 (though he had been part of a wealthy family, and had not had only scraps and junk to work with). Young Thirrion would become known as a fixer, or, repair man, of the town. Called upon to fix what many called the “Contraptions” that made day to day life easier, supposedly. Of course he was paid, somewhat, for his services, but he had always been a kind lad, if introverted, and would have aided the townsfolk with or without pay.

Most of the money he earned went to helping his family get along, any leftovers went to purchasing scrap and gears. Over the next few years Thirrion would be known to disappear for days, with strange noises, sparks, and the occasional explosion. Then show up days later with a new invention. At the Age of 15 Thirrion was easily the most accomplished Machinesmith around, having replicated many small magics with his machines and even upgraded one to hover near him at all times. At this point Thirrion had garnered the attention of many guilds as a promising youth the likes of which had not been seen since Varian and so received many invitations to apply to one. Though Thirrion was content to sit back and continue his easy, if somewhat, mediocre existence, inventing and building for no one but himself and the occasional family request until one day a few years later. He also felt obligated to stay home and look after his mother and little sister...

It was a sunny, cool, crisp morning, and Thirrion had just finished blue prints for something no one had ever attempted before, He called it, “the Mobius Core” an infinite energy source which he only hoped would work and not blow half the city to Talios and back. When he heard a knock on the door, he had shut down the servant-bot for a few upgrades and repairs and so had to answer the door himself, nearly stepping on the auto-duster ruffling across the floor in the process.
“Coming!” he yelled as he cursed under his breath about re-calibrating the sensors of the auto-duster.
“I wonder what has broken now…” Thirrion spoke softly to himself, sure that something somewhere had broken down and he was being called to fix it. Great was his surprise when he opened the door and there stood his childhood, and still now, hero, Varian.
“Greeting and salutations my good chap! Are you the one they call Thirrion?” Varian asked with a broad smile.

Struck dumbfounded Thirrion could only nod his head in reply, as all his logical processes came to a gear grinding halt, and then suddenly flooded back to life. Though he decided he would have preferred to have them remain halted..

*what, who? Why is this man here? To see me? Why? Did I do something wrong?*
Varian merely placed his hands on the lines of his trench coat and peered down through a monocle

“Well may I come in?” He asked.

“Oh! Um, y-yes, of course!” Thirrion stammered and stepped out of the doorway.

“Good, where is your dear mother lad? I wish to tell the good news before your whole family!” Varian exclaimed.
Thirrion could only look on, a face of pure confusion on his face.
“what good news sir?”

“Why, you being accepted into the grandest Guild in the land! The Clockwork Captains! We leave tomorrow for our guild HQ.”

Thirrion merely stood, jaw a slack. Finally, he manages to stammer out. “me?”

“Why yes of course you my boy! Who else?!” exclaimed Varian.
It was then that the gears began ticking in Thirrion’s head in Overdrive.

“AHHH, OH MY GOD, I have so much to show you! To Say! Here! Look,”
Thirrion picks up the auto-duster,
“What do you think!? I mean, I haven’t added its air cleaning mode yet, or its internal clock, or its ability to clean shoes but anyway, what about this one, look it’s my own design for staying cool! I call it a fan! Although I haven’t yet added the mobility feature, ohhh I could idea would be to add something to let it cast a shadow for shade I should write that down…..”
Thirrion went on like this for hours, showing Varian all his inventions and going on endless rants about what he planned to do, to give them, or about ideas he just then had, all following a logical order but still boggled the mind of anyone but Varian. Who sat there through it all smiling and eventually stood.

“Settle down my boy! You are already to be accepted into the guild, no need to impress me with your many inventions. I have heard about many of them, the Professor was quite impressed you know!” Varian explains after standing,
“Now come, it’s time for dinner and your mother has prepared a going away feast.”

The night went on as they discussed this and that and the hither-to’s and the why-for’s until he asked where his father was. After a few moments of silence Thirrion explained his father had passed away when he was 7 during a mining accident in the towns mines and so had never gotten to see Thirrions creations. During that time his grandfather had looked after him and his mother, with his mother doing what she could. He then said his grandfather and grandmother were still around but they were on hard times as well. Which was why he was unsure leaving his mother and sister. It wasn’t until the next day, when he packed up his blue prints and his belongings that it hit him. He would be extremely far away from his family for quite a time. He then wondered who would repair and maintain the contraptions around town. What would become of his creations around his house? Because of these thoughts he left all his tools, gadgets and blueprints for them at home, hoping that someone would be able to make sense of them and keep up the equipment of the town. Except one, He took his blue prints for his revolutionary power source with him.

It was in this guild that Thirrion also learned the art of Alchemy. His highly intelligent mind picking up the basics extremely quickly. Months passed after his induction to the guild, and while he had plenty of money to send home to his mother and grandparents he began to miss the simplicity of his old life and the ease of creating things on whimsy. It’s not that he didn’t love what he did now, It just seemed to… lack something. Back home there was always something new, different, whether it was fixing a broken gadget, or saving the town from one of his machines gone wrong (oops) there was never a boring day. Here, while he enjoyed the peace and quiet, and the time available to create and invent it become… procedure, routine, day in and day out even his work on his energy source seemed to slow but he kept at it, he had attained his dream, and was even caring for his family to boot. Why did he feel this way, it wasn’t logical.

It was due to this feeling that he decided to pick up swordsmanship and Firearms. His mind quickly grasped both, his body was agile and dexterous enough to keep up with his thoughts. He continued to practice more and eventually, wielding a blade become a second science to that of his work. Indeed, he even bought materials to forge his very own blade, more mechanical in nature than most, but one that, when damaged, would fix itself. Indeed, when Thirrion wielded his blade, and let go of focus save its skillful movements he almost seems to become another person. His timid nature gone completely, replaced by confidence.

After several more months, and a few… minor explosions. (which apparently were commonplace in the Guild) and a couple visits from the old professor he struck gold. After hours of tinkering with the last bits of his power core it finally lit up a neon blue, and actually began to HOVER in the air with little electrical arcs circling around it. He rushed out to the other members of the guild, who, upon seeing his creation, wondered in awe, even Varian, the leader, would accept that he had been surpassed in this area. Never was there a smile bigger on Thirrions face… until he figured out what to do with his power source…

As it turns out, the power source bonds with its owner, if a new core is created, the old one loses its bond, nothing Thirrion or Varian could think of would explain why but the process of making one was soon passed around and widely put to use, many using the power core to power towns, or other things, some, to create powerful weapons capable of defending their towns and kingdom, other created goggles capable of seeing anything and everything, even seeing through the most powerful of magical illusions. But Thirrion.. he had an Idea, one he had wanted ever since his 6th birthday. He built an intricate clockwork man, (which resembled his father when he had been young) taking extreme care to use only the most flexible yet most durable materials he could find. Once finished he placed the power core into the heart of the automaton and watched in wonder as it came to life. For up to this point Thirrion had always been hindered with what he could do by power and containment problems. His past machines being simple, having 1, or maybe 2 things they were programed to do, and quite fragile. This however, was a machine that he believed had unlimited potential. He was slightly disappointed when he discovered that the series of intricate programs etched into the gears, kogs, seams, and “heart” of his creation were not set into operation fully. After several checks he discovered that, his core was flawed. Well, not so much as flawed, as unfinished, He would realize that even the other cores were unfinished and only marveled at what was missing. He also determined that the material used to create his machine was lacking…. At this point Thirrion was 21, and had come to terms with the fact that he craved a life of adventure and wandering. Bringing his creations and there aid to all people. It was this fact, and that fact that he asked Varian for an indefinite leave. For Thirrion believed that the answer to his problems around the core would more likely come to him in travels and worldly experience. So within the week, Thirrion set out on his journey with his automaton guardian which he dubbed Alfred The steam Golem, his gadgets, his tools.

personality- Care free, intelligent, calculating, and, logical. He spends most of his time tinkering with his gadgets and machines but seems quite capable of doing so even during a heated discussion and not missing the beat on either. He is a good man and actively seeks to improve the lot of others, usually by introducing them to his "handy dandy helpers" which sometimes backfire hilariously still. Unlike many of his peers Thirrion understands the usefulness magic plays in things, even his own equipment, and understands that when one is fully able to merge science and magic into one, nothing in the world would be impossible for them.

Dream reward- on a non-cliche good guy note... The best materials in the world (and plenty of them) a city made solely for his friends and family filled with his machines.

deepest fear- Losing his creative mind, and or loved ones or family members. (also quite terrified of losing his fathers pocket watch)

Deepest desire- To bring real life to his creations, To bring new life to the world. (as it were)

Reason for dump stat:
He has lived most of his life with machines, his child hood was spent logically, making machines and other such things. While he is a rather handsome young fellow, his people skills are lacking, where machines are logical, calculating, predictable. People are emotional, brash, and unpredictable

Crafter (Ex)

A machinesmith adds half his class level (minimum 1) to all Craft skill checks.

Repair (Su)

A machinesmith can fix broken items with a mere touch. This acts the same as the spell mending, with a few exceptions. The machinesmith repairs 1d6 points of damage plus 1d6 points of damage for every other machinesmith level beyond first (2d6 at 3rd, 3d6 at 5th, and so on). The machinesmith can repair a number of times per day equal to 3 + his Intelligence modifier. Unlike mending, this ability can heal constructs.

Alchemical Sprayer (Ex): Worn on the back, this set of dual tanks is attached by a sturdy rubber hose to a hollow steel wand, which must be held in two hands. A backpack and alchemical sprayer cannot be worn at the same time. The right tank holds pressurized air, while the left holds up to 12 flasks or bottles of any liquid substance.

As an attack, the machinesmith can spray the substance in a 15-foot cone, affecting those hit with it. Any creatures that succeed on a Reflex save (DC 10 + 1/2 the machinesmith’s level + her Dexterity modifier) are not affected. As a move action, the machinesmith can switch the alchemical sprayer into stream mode. In this mode, the sprayer fires a concentrated stream up to 30 feet at one target against its touch AC. Each attack made with the sprayer consumes a single bottle or flask of the substance.

Substances cannot be mixed without dire consequences, so the machinesmith must completely clean the alchemical sprayer before using a different substance. Cleaning the sprayer takes 1 hour of work.

Refueling the alchemical sprayer’s liquid tanks requires 1 minute of careful funneling and attunement. After 12 discharges of the sprayer, the pressurized air tank must be recharged with 1 minute of working the attached hand pump.

This gadget can be selected as the base for a Mobius weapon. If it is made into a Mobius weapon, its air tank never needs to be recharged. Any feats that modify damage rolls with the Mobius weapon also apply to any initial damage dealt by substances launched from the sprayer. The alchemical sprayer has hardness 8 and 15 hit points, and it weighs 30 pounds.

Amelia Velding- Thirrion's younger sister. She is only 4 years younger but Thirrion still thinks of her as his 10 year old sister. She is sparky, unpredictable, and eccentric as her brother but much more sociable.

Varian- leader of the guild and Thirrion's childhood role model. Often portrays himself as gentlemanly and friendly in public, his closer friends sadly know his crass side. While he truly cares for his fellows he doesn't like showing sentimentality, and often hides his true intentions, sometimes at the cost of a friends feelings.

Alexander Roswell- rival of Thirrion's, due to Thirrion's success and prodigy like abilties he has grown jealous, and slowly bred a hatred for him. He Blames others for his failings, and often has a child like reasoning to his social reasoning. However he truly loves his family and is torn by his duty to provide for them, and his burning desire to follow Thirrion and make sure he doesn't come back. After all, with him gone he would once again be the best young inventor in the guild.
