In book 3 they will definitely struggle. There is some NPC help though.

AFAIK, it's not really covered in the adventure.

Captain Vadrack can plane shift once per day, and the Bloodwind is a folding boat, so if necessary he could carry the boat back and forth with him. However, I think it's probably best just to handwave the details.

If it comes up, say that the Denizens of Leng know secret paths from the Dreamlands to the material plane. The whole to-do at Briarstone had a rippling effect across Ustalav, weakening the boundary between the Material and the Dreamlands. That's how Nestor Bindlay accidentally wandered into the enchanted forest. Creatures like Denizens of Leng know how to find these weak spots and slip back and forth.

At least, that's what I'd do.

Thanks alot. To tell the truth i had kinda missed it was a folding boat!

My players used it to bribe the merchant in Celephais (after I scared them senseless by hinting that it's sinister masters on the moon might recall it at any moment, stealing them away along with it)

Awesome, great idea. I've got time to prepare, we start book 3 this weekend.

Can anyone answer a question about the Bloodwind. How does it travel to and from the Dreamlands. The PC's can catch sight of it on the Sellen river, and it releases monsters, but don't encounter it. They interact with in in the Dreamlands, but can't take it back. Am i missing something.

It's mostly the combat. I've noticed that enemies almost always go first, that there's a lot of invisibility and darkness flying around, and that everything grapples the investigator here in particular. There's also the matter of skill checks because our melee hasn't been able to spot a single thing despite maxing out perception and they lost interest after...I'm gonna spoiler this just in case.

** spoiler omitted **

Did your players have access to the players guide before character creation? It has recommendations for skills etc, with only minor spoilers. In my experience, grappling, invisible monsters are par for the course in the higher modules of most AP's. Also there are some NPC's in book 3 that could help with research.

My players started book 2 this week. I have the opposite problem, too much knowledge skill. I am suggesting some multiclassing for the investigator to up his offense.

Looking into monster abilities further. Engulf (Ex), probably causes suffocation. Swallow Whole (Ex) might, and weirdly Strangle (Ex) doesn't.

Smother showed up in Bestiary 4, only the Mudlord has it as part of engulf. The Lurking Rays have their own version, as does the Living Scroll from B5.

I may re-word it similar to the Lurking Rays, the Aerial Servant is higher CR anyway.

You realize you're asking "How do I do X without picking up anything to let me to do X" right?

You can choke someone out, but it requires feats or specific classes/archetypes.

Barring this, about the only way to otherwise strangle someone is to put them underwater.

Basically it's a worthless ability and you should just ignore it.

Yeah i kinda realize this. So this monster has a useless/cool ability and the fluff text means nothing?

Fluff: "They typically scatter enemies with blasts of wind before closing in to strangle their prey."

I thought i was missing something. It seems to be missing levels in Brawler (strangler)!

So how exactly do you strangle someone without any special items, feats or abilities?
The Aerial Servant has the smother ability, which hastens suffocation, but it relies on the victim having to hold its breath. Constrict, grab, and grapple, are silent on suffocation, as are Air and Elemental subtypes. CRB suffocation rules are silent on ways to cause it.
So how would an Aerial Servant, in a normal room, with lots of free PC air, get this ability to work.
