Will do.

Map

I continue to have trouble keeping up with my posting. I think it is time to cut back on my games. As this game is the most recently started of the games I'm moderating and with the fewest players, I'm going to need to put it on hold for a while. I'd like to resume it eventually, so let me know if you would want to continue it later.

I hate to do this, as I know it happens all too often that we get started in games that don't play out to a decent stopping point, but I think it must be done. Thanks for hanging in there as long as you have. Best of luck in your other games and in RL.

Map

Byrce: Presence + Convince
Ted: Coordination + Subterfuge + 2

Map

On the Table:
Chef Rhumsea: Coordination + Fighting, Injured: 4 + 2 + 2d6 - 1 ⇒ 4 + 2 + (2, 5) - 1 = 12

Retcon:
The points I deducted from the Chef's abilities last time were on the assumption K-9 were for lethal attacks instead of stun. If K-9 shot to stun, then the damage was 4 instead of 8. This turn's attack adds another 2 damage, which means he's now -1 to all his ability scores, but not yet unconscious.

Bryce retreats from the knife wielding chef while K-9 holds his ground firing his nose blaster set to stun. The chef tries to slice into the metal robot but the blaster hits him first and he staggers slightly. Chef takes a point to his strength. See Retcon above for more on his injuries.

As he fights, the man continues to shout, his eyes wide with fear and anger, "IT WASN'T MY FAULT! NOBODY UNDERSTANDS!"

New Round actions.

Map

Sorry for the delay in posting. I've had a weird schedule this term and I'm not managing my time in such a way as to keep up with all my PBP games. I'll try to have something up tomorrow morning.

Map

K-9: would you please put the following information in your profile. I don't have it memorized, which then makes me do some searches to find the post where I specified the damage amounts. Thanks. If it helps, you can also indicate that L stands for lethal and S stands for stun. A lethal wound kills outright. Stun just means knocked out or something similar.

Natural Weapons (Major): Nose blaster (Ranged) doing (4/8/L) damage or (2/4/S) damage when set on Stun.

Map

On the Table:
Chef Rhumsea: DC 19 Coordination + Fighting, multi-action penalty: 4 + 2 + 2d6 - 2 ⇒ 4 + 2 + (3, 4) - 2 = 11

Bryce sees the weapon coming at him and manages to move his body one way while deflecting the knife the other and only sustains a cut on his arm. K-9's attack catches the chef off guard however, and he takes a full blast, which leaves him badly wounded but not dead. The chef looks deranged as he regards the situation a moment after the blast hits him. He glances at a 3'x3' door about waist high on the north wall and back at Bryce and K-9. "They know!" he murmurs to himself (or perhaps someone else?).

Ted hears the sound of K-9's nose blaster and a commotion in the kitchen.

Bryce take 2 damage, reducing his strength and coordination by 1. The chef loses one point from all his ability scores and an extra from his Coordination and Resolve.

State your intended action, remembering that the order things will be resolved will be Talkers, Dooers, Movers, and Fighters. Since there is no time to confer, post under a spoiler. No need to give a lot of detail or make any rolls. That can come next post.

Map

Ted:
I'm assuming Ted opens the door, even though it was not stated specifically. Ted opens the door and finds the storeroom is filled with restaurant staff who apparently fled the kitchen and dining room to escape the fighting. They look at Ted with fear in their eyes, although when the note Crystale standing just behind him, they relax and watch. Some clutch kitchen knives or power tools as weapons.

Behind the Screen:
Chef Rhumsea: Presence + Resolve: 2 + 3 + 2d6 ⇒ 2 + 3 + (4, 5) = 14

Bryce, K-9:
Bryces words seem to take a moment to register in the chef's brain, but once they do, he turns an angry glare on to the full stun setting, and says shouts, "BORTU IS GOOD FOR NOTHING BUT SNAIL FOOD." He then abruptly attacks Bryce with his carving knife/laser.

Chef Rhumsea: Coordination + Fighting: 4 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ 4 + 2 + (3, 6) = 15

Bryce should make a defense roll to beat this result. Coordination + Fighting to dodge the attack. K-9 may make an attack with his nose blaster.

Map

I'd like to see what Ted does before continuing. K-9 will tag along with Bryce.

Map

Bryce can make a Presence + Resolve roll.

The first thing Bryce notices in the long narrow kitchen is that there is just one person there. While there are 6 stations and room for several cooks at each stove and counter area, only one man rattles the pots and pans, stirring a large saute pan which sizzles and sends up multi-colored flames as ingredients are added. The room is very warm and humid, with the pungent aroma of snails, snails, and snails thick as fog in the air. Lasers do one less point of damage in the kitchen, due to the steam and other particles in the air.

The man is only about 5' 4", although he looks taller in his high chef's hat, with dark skin, a flat nose and short black hair held in place with some kind of hair gel. But his presence is almost overpowering, someone used to barking orders and having people jump through fiery hoops to comply.

The chef glares at Bryce and grabs a carving knife which augments its cutting with a green laser. He starts chopping a large snail on a cutting board, initially ignoring Bryce.

I'll wait for the others to post before setting up the next interaction.

Map

Behind the Screen:
Awareness + Survival
Bryce: 3 + 0 + 2d6 ⇒ 3 + 0 + (5, 4) = 12
Crystale: 4 + 0 + 2d6 ⇒ 4 + 0 + (2, 6) = 12
K-9: 3 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ 3 + 1 + (6, 4) = 14
Ted: 4 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ 4 + 2 + (2, 1) = 9

The elevator doors close and the small compartment, barely large enough for everyone, begins to descend slowly. Crystale's body presses against Ted, causing her to make eye contact and blush slightly.

Soon the doors open, revealing they are in a store room with lots of resaurant supplies like linen tableclothes, towels, napkins, and the like. There are also various cleaning supplies and some canned goods, cooking utensils and plates.

The room is unoccupied, with a door at each end of the slightly curving narrow room. Crystale peeks out after the men and robot step/roll out of the elevator. "That's just another storeroom," she says, pointing to the one toward the west end. "That way to the kitchen," she says, looking toward the east.

Someone is in the kitchen, making sounds like someone moving pots and pans around. "I NEED MORE PAPRIKA!" shouts a man's voice.

"That's chef Rhumsea," Crystale whispers. "He ought to know where Bortu is."

Map

There are two buttons with somewhat cryptic letters, one above the other. They probably make more sense to someone who speaks and reads the Jocondan language.

Crystale says, "This is usually off limits to staff, but I think the top button is the kitchen and the bottom is where they keep the snails."

Map

Hope you are feeling better. The flu takes a lot of you, usually. Hope you are better.

In other news, I picked up something you all might appreciate, especially if you like cats as much as I do.

Doctor Mew Calendar

Map

Bryce could follow K-9 and Ted and find out more. The memories of the Admiral make the relationship between Luc and Adriana clear: they are enemies, loyal to different galactic political alliances. Luc is part of the alliance who has a fleet of spaceships nearby. Of course he may be disloyal or at least a loose cannon, since he appears to have engineered the invasion by the warriors.

Typical Doctor Who dilemma. I can assure you that anything you do has about an equal chance of success, so role play away.

Map

K-9 edges silently out toward the sound of laser fire, eventually reaching a door that is part of a hallway connecting staff apartments.

What K-9 sees:
K-9 sees Adrana firing her pistol at a man in a doorway to an apartment about 30 feet away. He is the man who came down after all the warriors entered. K-9 also recognizes him as Luc Jerik, the leader of the League's counterintelligence unit, with whom the admiral had an affair.

Meanwhile, Crystale points to a pair of sliding doors in the manager's office. "This is an express elevator down to the kitchen. If we want to find Bortu, this could be the best way find him without getting in that battle goin' on in the dinin' room." She presses some numbers on a keypad and the elevator hums as the lift moves up from below.

I've been puzzling over how to take things from here, as there are a number of ways to go. So I decided I would let you decide. You can ditch the battling agents and take the elevator down to find Bortu and his all important code to open the vault or you can help Adrana fight her enemy or you can help Luc, whom you know has a connection to the space fleet nearby.

Map

A cat my wife and I adopted 16 years ago is ailing and we'll probably have her put to sleep later today. It may be a few days before I return to PBP.

Map

The door to Bortu's apartment is locked, but Adrana says, "Allow me," and steps up, applies some kind of lock pick and the door opens.

"Have a look-see," Adrana encourages. "I'll keep watch."

The interior of the room has nothing unusual. Bortu keeps his place neat, with only a few pictures on the walls, none of them of people.

"He's single," Crystale observes. "He always seems more interested in running this place than in relationships."

A quick ransack of the draws and closet reveals nothing but the usual junk and clothing.

Suddenly there is the sound of laser fire (which gives off a crisp crack as ionized air molecules crackles as the electricity sizzles around the path of the light). Adrana's gun can be heard to fire somewhat closer.

Map

Sorry for the long delay in posting. I've got a few things going on at work and home. I'll try to get something up in the next 24 hours.

Map

Once Adrana has the codes, Bryce and K=9 check the Trace Locator and it points toward the north end of the top floor of the restaurant. The fighting downstairs continues with bursts of gunfire flaring up every ten seconds or so, but so far, the shots are down in the dining room area. A short walk through the halls behind the private dining area brings everyone to a locked door.

"That's the mortuary vault," Crystale says. "It's where the bodies and DNA samples are kept of the celebrities. It's a cinch that's where those big guys down there are gonna come next. Bortu is the only one who can open it."

The lock is impressive, the kind one invests in to protect valuable goods from hackers and people with heavy weapons alike. Bryce and K-9 make attempts at bypassing it, but the safeguards are well designed and entry will require both a pass code, biometric verification, and a physical key. Adrana takes a cursory look and declares is beyond her abilities.

Crystale leads the group to one of the apartments in the area between the vault and the private dining area, where all the staff live. Bortu is not in his apartment. "Bortu is probably either in the kitchen downstairs or the level below, where the snails do their thing."

Map

As Bryce starts to call out the code, Adrana stops him, threatening him with a gun and saying, "Hold on, Old Timer. We do this my way."

She gestures for Bryce to come toward her. "Whisper the code in my ear," she instructs. Once he's done so, she sends him back and calls Ted over to do the same, followed by K-9.

Assuming no one tries any tricks and each person delivers the same code, she is ready to do her part of the agreement.

If anyone wants to try anything different than this, speak up and we'll deal with it. If not, I'll continue in 24 hours.

Map

I'd say generally roll Awareness + Resolve. Awareness to notice details of body language and resolve to resist any subtle tricks of manipulation. I'd allow knowledge if one could justify experiences that would provide evidence of learning about body language. Ted would probably be focused on this sort of thing, so he could tell if the beautiful dame ... I mean woman who wants to hire him is hiding an ulterior motive. But that's something I should roll.

Behind the Screen:
Bryce: Awareness + Resolve: 3 + 3 + 2d6 ⇒ 3 + 3 + (2, 5) = 13
Adrana: Presence + Subterfuge: 3 + 3 + 2d6 ⇒ 3 + 3 + (3, 6) = 15

Ted: Awareness + Resolve: 4 + 3 + 2d6 ⇒ 4 + 3 + (6, 1) = 14
K-9: Awareness + Resolve: 3 + 3 + 2d6 ⇒ 3 + 3 + (2, 1) = 9

Bryce:
You detect nothing that suggests she is lying.

K-9:
You detect nothing that suggests she is lying.

Ted:
You detect nothing that suggests she is lying.

Map

Adrana sizes up the group for a few seconds, a confident smile on her face, before saying, "Everyone around here seems to be pointing guns at everyone else, so I assumed it was the polite thing to do."

She gives a wry smile at her own joke and continues, "Actually, you have something that is mine. I assume by the grey bits on your shirts that you ate snail with the remains of my contribution to your entry. I want to know what you learned, particularly the command words that can get the fleet to follow your orders. After I have all of them and an avenue of escape, you can continue your conversation, as long as you begin with the correct command word and something to convince them the Admiral is down here."

She talks fast to cut off interruptions, "Now, I only steal from my enemies, so assuming you wanted in here for something besides the cuisine, help me by giving me those code words, and I promise I'll help you get whatever you're after."

Map

The two transmissions are met with no immediate response. As ears strain to pick up a voice coming out of the faint static, a woman speaks from behind the group, "I'm afraid the league is much too regimented to treat with requests from random people looking for help. I've had some experience with them. Perhaps I can help."

Turning to see who is speaking, the people and robot recognize Adrana Boll, wearing a black leather catsuit with a variety of devices and weapons attached, and she is pointing a wicked looking hand gun at you all.

Map

K9 suggests a way to use some foil peeled off the interior section of wall panels placed over a parabolic shaped plate scavenged from a back-up generator to create a dish that can be connected to the transmitter/receiver. As this project completes and a quick check shows the dish is receiving transmissions from orbiting weather satellites.

"Thank god," Crystale says as the dish picks up a ship to ship communication from one of the nearby League of Independent Worlds fleet. "What are you going to do to get them to help?"

You guys are making me do all the work here. Please role play your characters, describing what they're saying, doing, and (if you like) thinking. Please give more than just the dice rolls. Feel free to make up elements of the environment so long as it's not something that would be tactically significant.

Map

Welcome back. I'm working on the next step. The adventure text is pretty wide open so the GM has to fill in a lot of the details of how to get from A to B. You all might want to check the time tracker now that you're closer to where it said you should be the last time you checked.

Map

Bryce gets the door open and looking around a few corners locates console that links to the communications dish just outside. A quick look out at the dish, however, gives everyone a sinking feeling, as it appears the warriors of Gol took a few shots at the dish and it is currently disabled. It's not a complete loss, however. A makeshift repairs with items lying around the room might work, but a diagnostic on the control panel recommends replacement parts, which are located in the electrical storerooms. Crystale says the storerooms are down in the underground area below the dining area.

Ingenuity + Technology roll to repair the dish. If the replacement parts are obtained from the storeroom, the Target for the roll is 12, otherwise, it is 21.

Map

"Human dogs! We help no one!" one Sontaran bellows.

"Out of the way, skum!" the leader yells.

Once the Sontarans know there are warriors to battle and as a bonus, those warriors interrupted their victory meal, they take no further notice of Bryce and the others, needing only a clear path to the stairs. If no one intervenes, they march into battle, laser rifles blazing red and causing loud cracking sounds as they fire.

Crystale leads the others past the dining rooms and west through a hall until she reaches a closed door marked "Security". She tries the door but it is locked and her security card will not open it.

"What y'all need is through there, but I can't get in."

The door might open with the proper application of skills. Ingenuity + Subterfuge or Ingenuity + technology. Target is 18.

Map

I've been waiting for a post from K-9. The player has posted in other campaigns recently. If any player has nothing active to contribute to a scenario, please post something, even if it is just a reaction of your PC to the situation and something to indicate the PC is not taking an action. That way it won't hold up the game waiting for you to post.

There are a number of things either Bryce or K-9 might try here. Support Ted's attempt at pacifying the Sontarans. Explain what the fight is about. Try to get the Sontarans on your side, or at least get them to see the warriors as the real threat. Play on what you (the players) may know about Sontarans. This is really not so much about the rolls as the roleplaying. If this were an episode of Doctor Who, what would you expect the companions to do?

Map

The area just inside the door is a hallway that connects to four private dining rooms. The Sontarans are in the hall that leads to the rooms, with two doors open nearest the south.

"Who dares to disturb our celebration of glorious victory?" the leader bellows.

Map

Adriana was not aiming at any of the PCs. It is more likely she started the fire fight so you could use the chaos to get up to the top level.

On the table:
K-9: Ingenuity + subterfuge: 7 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ 7 + 1 + (5, 4) = 17
Crystale: Coordination + Subterfuge: 2 + 0 + 2d6 ⇒ 2 + 0 + (6, 5) = 13

@Bryce Coordination +Marksman, cover: 3 + 2 + 2d6 - 3 ⇒ 3 + 2 + (4, 6) - 3 = 12
@Crystale Coordination +Marksman, cover: 3 + 2 + 2d6 - 3 ⇒ 3 + 2 + (6, 3) - 3 = 11
@K-9 Coordination +Marksman, cover: 3 + 2 + 2d6 - 3 ⇒ 3 + 2 + (4, 5) - 3 = 11
@Ted Coordination +Marksman, cover: 3 + 2 + 2d6 - 3 ⇒ 3 + 2 + (5, 6) - 3 = 13
location table: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11
attribute (Awareness, Coordination, Ingenuity, Presence, Resolve): 1d5 ⇒ 3

Crystale, Bryce, Ted, and K-9 crouch and move from table to table, heading for the bottom of the curved staircases that begin at the south side of the room near the entrance. Shots of heat rays come close, but the plasma sniper seems to fire just as the group is about to begin another burst of movement and draws fire away from the time travelers. Near the base of the stairs, however, a heat ray hits a table Ted was hiding under and the ray burns partway through the table and burns his head. His hat goes up in flames and his hair catches fire, leaving his scalp burned.

A plasma blast takes out a warrior of Gol, whose heat ray falls from his hands and slides within reach of the group. Anyone can grab it. It does damage 4/L/L.

Ted loses 3 points from Ingenuity until someone can apply first aid, due to the distraction of the pain.

Once at the staircase, the group is able to stay out of sight and the lines of fire, by crawling at the far side from the bannister until they get to the top and Crystale’s name tag unlocks the door.

As the group rushes to apparent safety away from the firefight, they find themselves staring down the guns of the party of Sontarans. ”Surrender or be obliterated!!!” the leader yells.

Map

Crystale's eyes water for a moment as she takes in this information. She gives Bryce a kiss (for luck) and gestures for the group to follow her. She threads through the tables toward the stairs that lead up to the second level. The fire fight continues around them. The stairs that lead up to the second level are wide enough for three people to walk up them abreast, with a railing that doesn't really provide much protection from heat rays. Crystale is indicating the west set of stairs should be taken.

Everyone is going to have to roll a Coordination or Ingenuity plus subterfuge to indicate how well each avoids notice during the chaos. This will be the target number for a roll by others in the room to notice them as they try to get up the stairs to the upper level. If you can think of anything that might help give you cover or create a further distraction, make a roll using a reasonable combination of ability and skill. Nominal success level = 12 to gain a bonus on the above rolls, but this could be modified up or down depending on the difficulty of what is being attempted.

Map

Sorry for taking so long to resume. I was affected by some kind of intestinal flu or perhaps mild food poisoning.

The post I just made in the Gameplay thread took a few hours to compose, in part because this point in the adventure is complicated and I had to decide on which of a number of ways things could go. The adventure text is organized in such a way that it takes some time to hunt for information. I did not have the energy to do that after my usual work routine. I hope things will get back to normal this coming week.

Map

Crystale leans so close to Ted's back, he can feel her heart racing. She looks around, makes eye contact with a male wait staff colleague and pleads with a look for him to step forward, but he does the opposite, ducking to safety behind the kitchen door.

The attempts at diplomacy by DeBries and Ted do not impress these warriors and they continue shouting demands until a man descends to join the warriors. Those who ate the snails who ate the late admiral recognize him as Luc Jerik, the admiral's head of the League's counterintelligence agency and Yom's romantic partner. He's not wearing armor and only has a sidearm for a weapon.

Crystale stands and the warriors train their guns on her. She yells out, "Y'all can have yer body if you can find the restaurant manager, Bortu."

"WHERE IS THIS BORTU? TAKE US TO HIM!" the king shouts.

Crystale starts to move when a laser dot appears on a nearby table, where DeBries and his party are cowering, followed by a plasma bolt that turns the table into a smoking wreck.

Awareness + Presence vs. target of 12:
You noted the laser trace moments before the warriors did and follow it up toward an open ventilation shaft in which you spot Adrana Bol aiming a plasma rifle. She makes eye contact with you just before sending the plasma bolt and tilts her head sideways. When your eyes shift in that direction, you see the entrance to the second level where the private dining rooms are.

Ingenuity + (Knowledge or Transport) + 2 vs Target of 12:
Your recent jaunt through the memories of Admiral Harry Yom has imparted a temporary expertise at transport (Space Battleships) and Knowledge (Military Tactics). That plus your knowledge that there is a League of Independent Worlds battle fleet nearby gives you an idea. If you can get to a communicator capable of extra-planetary transmissions, you could transmit the appropriate code to the fleet and order them to attack the warriors invading the restaurant.

The warriors instantly turn their weapons in the direction from which the plasma bolt was fired but before they can fire, something follows the plasma bolt along the same line. It seems to be some kind of chemical that is ignited by the ionized air, sending billows of violet smoke through the air, making it hard to see. A moment later a flash of light fills the room which appears to have been an EMP that puts the lights out and temporarily disables the warriors' heat rays.

In the chaos, it is possible to make a dash for either the kitchen or the upper level or the main entrance to the lobby. The sturdy doors to the lobby are closed, however. No rolls needed. Just describe where you go and anything else you try to do as you go. Crystale will follow.

K-9 must make a Resolve + Strength roll vs target of 12 to avoid damage from the EMP.

Map

Monday night I came down with something that has had me sick for a few days and not posting. I hope to be back on track Thursday evening. Sorry for the delay.

Map

Behind the Screen:
King Hark: Presence + Convince, Voice of Authority, Shouting: 4 + 5 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ 4 + 5 + 2 + (2, 5) = 18
Crystale: Presence + Resolve, Brave: 4 + 3 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ 4 + 3 + 2 + (3, 4) = 16

K-9: Presence + Convince: 1 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ 1 + 2 + (4, 2) = 9
King Hark: Presence + Resolve: 4 + 3 + 2d6 ⇒ 4 + 3 + (5, 3) = 15

K-9's assertion gets the King's attention. He sneers at the robot, but says nothing in response. Then he looks around at the crowd.

The husband of the couple celebrating their anniversary looks ill and proceeds to vomit up his meal. Then he faints. His wife cowers under the table.

Pollock DeBries, the wealthy investor, stands and clears his throat, causing numerous heat rays to be directed at him in case he does something dangerous or insulting. "Hear, Hear! No need to shoot us. We're just customers." He points over at Crystale who is kneeling in fear near Ted. "She works here. Have her take you to where your lord is stored."

I can't remember, do we know the name of the person that we just...whose memories we just sampled?

The name was not mentioned by Adrana Boll, but the memories would have provided the name, Admiral Harry Yom.

Map

The view of the warriors is somewhat obstructed by dust thrown in the air by the chunk of roof and by people running past. They are larger than typical people, with humanoid features, armor, rifles, guns, and large battleaxes. So far they haven't shot anyone, firing weapons mostly to demonstrate how lethal their weapons are (and from the smoking holes they leave in walls, their weapons appear lethal indeed).

After the first eight warriors have formed a circle, a final similarly armored figure lowers to the floor. He wears extra emblems that suggest he is their leader and the gun he carries seems extra lethal. He leaps and lands on the table around which sit Ted, Bryce, and K-9 and roars to the room, “WE ARE THE WARRIORS OF GOL! YOU HAVE DEFILED THE GLORY OF THUNAR HAMMERLORD! ALL YOUR LIVES ARE FORFEIT. BRING US THE HOLY BODY OR WE SHALL DESTROY YOU!”

One of the Interplanetary Pursuit Squadron members draws a gun, but before he can fire it, a beam from one of the warriors hits him in the shoulder and leaves him screaming in pain.

Map

Well, I'm back. Thanks so much for your patience. These past few weeks have been stressful and I just didn't have the will to work on these posts when I didn't have much time and was burned out from many long days.

My schedule is back to teaching days, with a slight change. I'm teaching on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. But I'll be working on other projects on Monday and Wednesday. I should have time to post regularly again, although don't be surprised if I miss posting a day or two during the middle to end of the week.

Map

Crystale taps in the order on her tablet and smiles sweetly as she checks on a few tables nearby and returns to the kitchen, which is toward the NE side of the dining area.

A few minutes later, she brings a drink and appetizer cart by and serves up some things to keep the group occupied. She also serves several other nearby tables of guests who ordered about the same time. One of the wealthy guests of DeBries muses loudly that the appetizers were rumored to have taste anesthetics, to make the snail based fare easier to eat.

Crystale says she is looking for Bortu, the manager of the restaurant, but he's apparently not in the kitchen. "I'll see if he'll authorize an informal tour of the upstairs, if he's not too busy."

So it goes for about a half hour. There is lots to watch and hear, with various aliens, odd dialects and languages, and the aroma of the appetizers and drinks. The married couple get their snail dishes before the course Ted, Bryce, and K-9 ordered.

The man describes memories of impressive conquests, battles, and rituals. "I believe I've got that warrior bloke, Thunder Hammerhead or some such. Fascinating!" The woman swoons a little and announces she is reliving memories of the filming of Heartbreak Hotel and the performances of Elvis!

Eventually, Crystale returns with two covered dishes. She also sets a small dish down on the floor for K-9, saying she was not sure if he ate food or not but thought she'd make sure he was included.

Tucking into the food, it doesn't taste like much, a bit like mushrooms and chalk. But as soon as the food hits the taste buds, strange images, sounds, and bodily sensations form in Bryce and Ted's minds. If K-9 uses his nose device on the food, he too gets some memories as if he had eaten it.

There are fleeting memories of being a cadet in naval training school, of fighting in a space battle as a gunner, becoming captain of his own ship, getting promotions to admiral. Once he is Admiral, memories of meetings of the League of Independent Worlds planning military missions, discussing the machinations of their enemy the Stellar Commonwealth, codewords for launching an upcoming military operation, and some slightly disquieting romantic encounters with a handsome younger man named Luc, the leader of the League's counterintelligence unit, including pillow talk about League intrigue and plans to send a fleet to the Jacondan system as a staging ground for an invasion of the Commonwealth.

It seems as if all of this must be taking hours, but in fact, much as dreams sometimes do, it all takes place between mouthfuls. The experience is also somewhat intoxicating and each person eating finds himself taking another bite to see what's next, without taking time to talk much about what is being experienced.

Toward the end of the meal, the group actually recognizes one of the people interacting the the Admiral: it is Adrana Boll, the woman who gave the group her reservation. She flirts with the admiral at a state function, lures him into a side room, and then administers a paralyzing injection. The last memory delivered is of Adrana preparing to interrogate him. She injects him with a truth serum, but it causes an allergic reaction and his tongue swells up and he chokes to death before anything can be done to help him.

Just as the immediacy of the memories fades, Crystale checks on the diners, saying she still can't find Bortu. Suddenly there is a thump on the roof above, followed by a blast that knocks a big chunk out of the roof that falls to the dining room's east side, barely giving surprised diners enough time to leap out of the way. Panic ensues as hulking big warriors rappel down to the dining room floor.

Map

I really thought I'd get some posts in this past weekend, but I'm having to work a lot on the weekend and when I had time, I felt too burned out to make good posts. I'll continue to try to post as I can, but it might be best to consider the game on temporary hiatus until my schedule settles down. Sorry.

Map

My schedule is going to be so packed with extra duties and regular duties that are going to take more time than usual for the next four weeks, that I can't promise I'll post much during the week. I'll try to get in quick posts when I won't need to check the reference books or generate maps or NPCs, but some things will have to wait for the end of the week. I recommend you RP conversation that advances what your characters are like and allow the PCs to get to know each other better. This should not become the regular state of things, just a short-term necessity. Thanks for your patience.

Behind the Screen:
Crystale: Target 19 Awareness + Charm, major obligation: 2d6 + 4 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2, 3) + 4 + 3 + 2 = 14

Crystale smiles at Ted's charming suggestion. She hesitates but then nods as she herds Ted back toward the table. "Let me get your order in and I'll see what I can do. I'm not supposed to but next time a group comes in, I'll come get you and we can tag along at the back. It's not much to to see, an' some of the areas are just where the staff stays, an' some areas are off limits even to me. Now what do y'all want and what memories will you be savorin'?"

Crystale accepts Ted's tip graciously. "You're so sweet. I'll do what I can to makes sure you enjoy your meal."

Crystale glances up toward the door to the upper level. "Well, those are jus' the private dinin' rooms. People reserve those in advance, so unless you have a reservation or y'all get invited up there to join another party, you're stuck down here with our regular services. But don't worry. You can get all the same food down here."

When she gets Ted back to the table, she pulls out her tablet order device and says, "Do you know what y'all want? If you're not sure, I'd recommend the Passport Platter. It's got some of our most ordered entrees. Jus' let me know if you want your own body's mem'ries or those of one of our celebrities."

I hope to have a post up on Saturday morning. It's going to be a working weekend, but I should have time to advance the game a bit. Thanks for your patience.

My posting is going to slow to a trickle the next couple of days, as I have extra project work with deadlines of Friday and Monday, the end of the term in my classes, and an in-law visiting from out of town.

You've got options. Mingle, order and see what happens when the snails come, try to talk your way upstairs or back to the kitchens.

I'm going to slammed with work and a special work project, so I may not post until later tonight.

Pollock DeBries laughs at Ted and takes his hands off Crystals. He reaches into his jacket pocket and hands Ted what looks at first glance like a playing card, but closer inspection reveals is a form of currency. "Very gallant of you bub. Buy yourself a new jacket, why don't you. That one looks a couple of centuries old."

Crystale looks relieved until she sees how much Pollack gave Ted. She looks at Pollack and he smirks and says, "That was going to be your tip. Now how about getting those drinks?"

Crystale escorts Ted back to his table while she quietly says, "Thanks hon, but that's just a game we play. It earns me a big tip, usually."

As Bryce makes for the stairs, a server intercepts him and says, "The lavatories are around behind the stairs, sir. The upper level is for those who reserve private dining rooms and the excelsior service."

K 9 wrote:

You are probably correct.

It is more than 40 years since I did most of my watching of K 9, which makes me feel kind of ancient.

If my rather dim memory serves me well, K 9 didn't talk all that much. But he tended to show up at really vital times. Which means before that he had to get separated, which is normally a bad thin in RPGs.

On use of language, I am not an academic but did spend a long time at university. I remember at one time trying to get my sentence length and complexity down. I was successful but before my sentences were too long and it a reader could easily be confused or have to read them twice.

I worked for a financial organization in their operations department and I was told by my supervisor I was using too many big words when explaining things to the associates.

As for K-9, I have very limited exposure, but I'd encourage you to deviate in any way you like from the series depiction of K-9 for the sake of playability. We are assuming K-9 has had some upgrades. I always found it odd that advanced technologies would make a relatively clunky and simplistic robot such as K-9. I figure the character was there to appeal to children who were part of the target audience.

Before Bryce can stand, the cute blonde waitress arrives at the table with the menus. They are tablets which form the names of the dishes and with a touch, show how the item looks on its serving plate.

"Howdy," the waitress says with a strong American Southern accent. "Mah name is Crystale, and Ah'll be your server. Here are your menus. Just touch any dish you think you might like, and you can read more about the dish. Since you brought your own body, Ah've adjusted it to show you the specialties you might like. But feel free to peruse the historical figures in case you might like an appetizer or desert. We're having a special on some of our most popular figures known to history. There's Thunar Hammerlord in a spicy snail bisque, the great scientist, Marius, served in garlic butter, or maybe you'd like the Sylvest Twins on a half-shell each. I'll leave you to look things over and I'll be right back to see if you'll have any questions."

She walks away to check on the table with the wealthy socialites. Glancing at the menu quickly reveals that every dish has some reference to snails, escargots, or gastropods, or some other terms that undoubtedly refer to snails as well. A small asterisk appears by many items on the BYOB (bring your own body) list. Touching it brings up a note that says it is one of the meals prepaid for by Adrana.

There's a little note that informs diners that 5% of the cost of the meal goes to the Jacondan Ecological Restoration Fund. Touching this box provides more information.

More Information:
The information details the sad story of the invasion of Jaconda by gastropods, a race of giant, telepathic snail warriors, controlled by their master Mestor. The Gastropods plotted to destroy Jaconda’s sun in order to create a supernova that would fling their eggs across the galaxy, so that they could colonize and devour more worlds. They were defeated by a great warrior who came to the aid of the planet, defeated the Gastropods, destroyed Mestor, leaving the surviving Gastropods mindless animals who became the source of the restaurant's main attraction.

Awareness + Resolve Target 12:
You notice Crystale is gamely fending off some of the rich guys who are trying to get handsy with her, inviting her to sit on their laps.

I appreciate the effort and the challenges. A suggestion I might make is when K-9 makes a knowledge roll and then reports to the group, consider rephrasing that information into shorter sentences. I'm not very familiar with K-9's dialogue from his Doctor Who adventures with the 4th Doctor, but my sense is he does not speak in long sentences with lots of dependent clauses (which is how I tend to write as an academic).
