I am trying to find an experienced DM to run a one-shot for my wife's birthday on Sunday 6/14. The group would be about 6 people of varying but low experience levels.
Willing to hire out for the right person. Hoping to find someone "in practice" that can keep the day light and fun but on-pace. Please let me know if you are interested.
Open to discussing terms and system as long as the day is fun.

How. Horrible...
I have yet to see a debate that couldn't be resolved along these lines...

The bottom line, Jonathan, is that a Dungeon Master's ability to affect his player characters is defined by three variables: the content of their backgrounds, their choices in game, and his out-of-game conversations with them.
If your DM is changing your character in ways that are not reflective of these variables, you have every right to object simply on the grounds that you are not enjoying his actions. If he wants to direct the action through a character, then he has to introduce an NPC to do it -- otherwise the entire purpose of having players is subverted.
OP, hopefully you don't lose control of the character; even if you turn out to be the BBEG. I had something trending this way and regret I never got to finish that campaign. Looking back, I'm sure everyone would be freaking out about that plot line too. I for one would love to hear how this plays out for you.

Think about it... your tragically lost, favorite brother starts talking to you and helping you miraculously from beyond the grave, but then suddenly stops when this cleric starts playing around with your head. You might respond poorly to such a change.

In all seriousness, I'm game for whatever. If it isn't going to work out, that's fine; otherwise I'm still up for it.

This thread needs more Heinlein, I suggest starting with the Lady Vivamus
Thank you both. Your info has helped. There aren't any Society games near me, but I haven't checked out any of the Living stuff yet. I've decided to give PbP a shot, so I'll be poking around on that board. If anybody else has other suggestions, I'd love to hear those as well.
I've never played in a PBP before, but I'd like to give it a shot. If there are still slots open, and you're game for a new guy, I'll have a go.
EDIT: Slings okay?

Hello everyone. I'm looking for some ideas on how to play more DnD/etc, but there is a rambling intro full of info first. Sorry for the long post.
My wife and I recently decided we want to play DnD, and subsequently fell in with a local PRPG group (closing in on 6 months of playing now). We love the game we are in and are becoming good friends with our DM and the other players. We're getting to a point where we'd like to play a bit more, but have scheduling problems. Sunday is pretty much tied up with our current game, and there is no way I could block out enough play time to make a weeknight worth it. There are a few groups around, but I'm not sure that we can commit to a second group of players, and I would feel like a schmuck just floating in and out. I have heard of a few other options, but don't really understand all the details:
1) Living DnD/Pathfinder Society: What's the point and what's the difference. If I'm able to find one of these around does it suit on-again/off-again availability?
2) Play-by-Post: What are the typical expectations here? Constant board monitoring, 1hr/night, etc. I don't consider myself to be a munchkin, but I do have a hard time letting go of the math sometimes. Will the format cause me issues?
3) Play by chat: I seem to remember hearing that there are gameplay chat rooms, or possibly an online client that fully simulates the game table. What's up here, and how do these folks connect?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read, and for any help you can give.

You could allow the fighter to trade in a "fighter" feat for say 8 skill points. It would allow more flexibility. They had something like that in the setting book. First level feat for 4 skill points per level, don't think thats a fair trade really, but some like it Bonus points, and it also made several of the Knowledge skills class skills I believe.
Stebehil wrote: What you are probably referring to is the stiletto. With a weapon like this, it should be possible to penetrate the weak spots of plate armor (and penetrate chain mail easily, of course). As others have said before, a plate armor has to have gaps at the joints, otherwise the wearer could not move at all. Of course, it was tried to cover these with chain mail, but a stiletto could still cause nasty wounds - imagine one penetrating the elbow or knee joint, the pain alone whould be unbearable, to say nothing about the damage caused.

In addition to other things:

The MyArmoury link especially show several styles of dagger that were in use during the "plate period".
Besides pain, damage, etc. even if such a dagger got a hold of the armor but didn't even nick the wearer; you now have a giant handle/lever on your opponent }:D
The inside of any joint is going to be chain over padding at the most. As already mentioned the armpit almost always has some sort of gap, as well as around the neck behind the clavicle, and the groin. All common targets when people actually fought in the stuff. Rapiers are one thing, but daggers and short swords would be excellent for exploiting these gaps.
KaeYoss wrote: Jedi. Seriously. They meditate on these powers they just manifest? Sounds like they'd get their own book in D&D.
Firefly. Two by two, hands are blue. I can kill you with my brain.
Babylon 5. Telepaths (as well as the occasional Telekinetic and at least one Empath) play a big role there. They also explain why humans just happened to have telepaths all of a sudden somewhere in the 22nd century. ^This.
For me, I also think of certain aspects from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time. When adding this new "power" to fantasy, I think of Perrin and Matt's abilities. All the "casters" are sure that it's magic, but they can never nail it down.
