Addressing Selena, "I don't think it could hurt to ask. Let us take leave of this area and make way for the Mage's quarter. I'm sure we can find the right setting there to quiet our minds."


Dirk, Armand:
I do NOT think this is the same man that requested our services initially. We should be extremely caution with this man. I don't think we should turn anything over to him until we somehow verify that he is the same person.

Sense Motive Roll focused at Kaerin: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20


"Ok, stacking the table and the chair could work. Then maybe we can hoist Lash through the top of the hole. We could then toss her the rope that is currently binding the cleric and we could use that to pull the rest of us and all of this stuff up and out of the hole."

Thantos continues, "I'd rather try this than take our chances with a trek back through this mage's lair. If my powers were not so exhausted we could be more creative. If we want to get out tonight I think the hole is the only choice."


As the door swings open, Thantos tosses a sneer at Lash and Selena. Snickering he says, "Ye of little faith."


"I found a Knock spell in the bone tube that we found in this room. I'll bet that Knock spell will allow us to open the door."

Thantos walks to within an arms reach of the door. He removes a single copy of the Knock spell from the bone tube. Safely returning the second spell to the bone tube and storing it in his pack, Thantos begins to recite the incantation from the parchment.


Thantos scans the room looking for water or a large table cloth or similar items that he could use to attempt to extinguish the fire burning in the fire place.


DM:
Is there anything Thantos can do as a Wizard to put out the fire?


"Lash, Mird. Has one of you investigated the inside of the fireplace? If we can pull the burning fire out of there maybe we can get a better look at the back wall of that fireplace. I just have a strange feeling that there could be a door or secret room behind there."


Diplomacy: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

Thantos continues, "I am certain that our friend, Katzani here, would be more than willing to tell us what he knows about his captors and about what they have found while down here."

Crouching down closer to Katzani, Thantos offers, "You see Katzani as I see it you have two choices. We can let Dirk and Lash slowly dissect you limb by limb or you can help us by telling us what you know about this place and your former captors. If you prove yourself and demonstrate to us that you are trustworthy we can offer you protection and a chance to redeem yourself by coming to the aid of Father Armand. If you serve him well he might even find it in his heart to forgive you for your transgressions against him and his family."

After a dramatic pause Thantos asks, "So Katzani...?"


Thantos listens intently to the Clerics story while he finishes loading the last of the mage's desk contents into his travelling pack.

Walking from behind the cleric towards he and Dirk, Thantos gives Dirk a nod and a wink before he begins, "Now Dirk you needn't be so harsh on our friend. After all we have just delivered him from his captors. I am certain that our friend..."

Thantos turns toward the cleric continuing, "Your name, sir?"

Waiting for his name before I continue.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20


Thantos collects all of the relevant materials from the desk loading them into his travelling pack.

DM, let me know if I have enough room in my back pack for all of these materials.


After studying the parchment, Thantos wanders over to the Mage's desk where Selena is currently investigating. Thantos notices a number of items that he could use to copy spells to his spellbook.

Noticing the usefulness of the items Thantos says, "Selena, what an excellent find. Are you interested in these materials? Because I could certainly use them for my spellbook."


Spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

Thantos would like to add it to his spellbook, however, it is not something that he will try to undertake in our current situation.


Thantos begin studying the scroll using his knowledge of magic and all of his concentration.


Knock, Knock. Hello? anyone home? Things were just getting interesting.


Thantos looks at Mird saying, "Quick, the priest is starting to come around. Let's tie him up, restrain him and question him about his friends."

Pointing his smooth, delicate index finger at the priest Thantos cackles, "Finally we will have answers."

Thantos pauses for a moment to quickly scan the room. In a start he begins furiously looking for the bone scroll tube that he saw the caster drop near his feet.


After just missing the fighter Thantos bares down using all of his concentration to again target the fighter. After a quick exhale he narrows his vision and fires a bolt from the crossbow.

Attack: 1d20 ⇒ 11
If Hit Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 3

I thought you determined previously that her round 4 action would be the heal she threw at Father Armand??? Or do I have my rounds confused?


I'm trying to post my attacks within a couple of posts of the surrounding players and NPCs based on our initiatives. This gives me a bit of flexibility in target selection based on previous attack outcomes.

Fyird, thank you for your input. I appreciate it very much. I am still learning much about Pathfinder, so please always feel free to instruct me on the rules.

Fyird, what you say seems logical. So in a situation like this I want this to hit me. I'm not actively trying to avoid it, but I also don't know it is coming. So what would Father Armand's starting 'to hit' be, would it be zero? Then if you apply the -4 to that, would that mean that Selena needs to roll a 4 or greater for the heal to succeed? Something low like that seems fair for this situation. Also my 2-cents.


DM, Its all good. After all we're not all professional Pathfinder Players, LOL. My main frustration is with the magic system at the early levels in Pathfinder and D&D. I'm looking forward to more fun from this campaign. Thanks!

Actually that's one of the better early level spells, though it looses much of its effectiveness after about 3rd level. by then everything usually either is too many HD, or has too high saves. But if you remember I used it twice in the first battle, against the catapults and took out several orcs before closing for combat. there is a 10HD version called Greater Slumber in 3.5, not sure if it made it to Pathfinder, that I learned to hate as a DM. Fyird, I do remember you using sleep in the first part of the campaign. I didn't, however, remember the mechanics of how things worked when you used it. Hey if nothing else we have the healer out of commission for a few minutes while we try to mop things up around here.

DM: I have NO idea what you are talking about in regard to Selena and her alignment role playing.

When I said, "Why did you have to be nice?" I was asking about YOUR comment regarding being nice and somehow ALLOWING my sleep attack to count in the first round of battle.

Fyird, thank you so much for your clarification on the sleep spell. When I read the Pathfinder explanation of the mechanics I interpreted the effect the same way you have described it. My mistake was believing that I needed to role 1d4 to determine how many creatures/people were affected by the spell. When the DM shot back that the spell was a dud I just figured, as I have always believed, that the cast classes are extremely underpowered for the first few levels and that I would be easily picked off standing around plucking out anemic crossbow shots. I thought I was making a really good play trying to crowd control the group, especially with all of the havoc that occurred the first round of battle.

Now that I have cracked off my one weak spell for the day, I'll just go back to totting the map while hiding behind Dirk like a meat shield.


At the sound of the shattering glass Thantos glides to the western wall nearer the corner than Selena. Arriving he prepares his crossbow for action.

Fortitude Save: 1d20 ⇒ 20

Calling out to Mird, "He is somehow protected, either by stoneskin or some protection potion. I guess we may never know now."


Why is it that you had to be nice, so I can be sure to do better in the future?

Thantos cast sleep on the enemies.

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8


Thantos begins to creep forward in preparation for attack.


Thantos quiets his mind in preparation for a battle, he begins to summon a magic missile preparing his mind to release it the moment his foe is in sight.


"I don't think it wise to venture back into the alchemy lab. At best we should lure who ever's in there out into the hall."


DM, can you recap where we are at on the map? I have forgotten our current position. Thanks.


Thantos instinctively attempts to jump back away from the door to put distance between himself and whatever havoc the source of this sound is going to cause.

Reflex roll: 1d20 ⇒ 16


Completing his search of the room Thantos notes, "You know it is also possible that whoever was in here was killed. Between the Carrion Crawler and the Rust Monster, it is not beyond possibility that this person or persons could have been killed and devoured. The Rust Monster would take care of any metal items while the Carrion Crawler would take care of the body."

Perception check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22 Specifically looking for signs of the remnants of other people.

"I know one thing for certain, this Wizard has a most exquisite wizarding chamber. I wish I could have known this Wizard before his end. He must have been a great and powerful man."


Sorry for my lack of engagement. Work has been hell.


Closes his mouth slowly while his arms hang in the air in preparation to cast a spell. Thantos shakes off the shock after witnessing Mird's impressive display of acrobatics and ferociousness.

Thantos then pauses for a moment to consider the contents of the room.

Knowledge Arcana: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23


"Selena, I know there are such Wizardly powers. I am not personally capable of such an ability."


Craft (alchemy) check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

1337 alchemy roll :)


In a stern, directive voice, Thantos says, "Don't go poking around here too much, unless you want to be transformed into a goat, get turned undead or maybe even something worse."

"Our Wizard friend has a number of unattended concoctions brewing forth magic."

"Watch it!!", Thantos exclaims as a test tube spontaneously bursts spilling its contents across table. The liquid glows briefly as is slowly spreads out across the table.

Thantos continues, "This might very well be a GREAT place to hide something, but I am not sure how much we can safely move while we investigate the area. It might be best if you allow me and our nimble friend Lash to carefully investigate things in here while the rest of you move back out of this room."

Thantos pauses while he waits for the group to respond.

Thantos adds the box to his pack saying, "These will do nicely." and continues moving with the group.


"I feel completely at ease in here."

Thantos stands quietly for a moment absorbing the energy from his surroundings.

"I doubt there is much of anything in here", he says as he begins to look more closely at the items in the room.

Perception check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19


"Interesting...I think we can wait on that room. Our "friends" must not be very strong nor dexterous if they couldn't get that door open. My guess is they aren't human, maybe Kobolds or some other similar creature.

When Lash returns we can have her check the eastern door as well before we decide on our path."


Looking at Selena, but addressing the whole party, Thantos instructs, "We will all move into the hallway so that we can be ready for whatever happens as we investigate the north and south doors."

"Selena if this is affecting you so why not take leave of this room now, you shouldn't have to suffer."


"Can anyone tell which way the others went? We should probably make their acquaintance sooner rather than later. It'd be best if we keep surprise on our side now."

Pausing to consider the situation for a moment, Thantos continues, "Lash sneak down to the southern door and listen for sounds of the others. Mird, you head for the northern door and do the same. The rest of us will remain here and prepare to come to your aid should something go wrong. Agreed?"
