Background:
Tavarest Ivaine, or Tava to her friends, only recently arrived in the town of Torch, having traveled a circuit through a number of settlements to deliver her message of faith to those who haven’t yet embraced Brigh. She spent her youth in a remote highland village, born the only daughter of a healer woman and a surface dwarf. The latter’s lineage included several unusual influences—from shaitan genies and mephits to deep earth elementals and even a crystal dragon—all of which she believes led to her divinely-inspired birth as a very unique oread. This belief crystallized even further as she grew older and developed an ever-present affinity for rocks and metals.

Tava eventually found her priestly calling after encountering a wounded follower of the Bronze Lady named Callas. The man nearly lost his life after being attacked by Technic League assassins hunting him across open plains, and Tava helped care for him during his long recovery.

In return, he taught her of the faith of Brigh, as well as more advanced principles of engineering and metallurgy. He also told her of his past. Callas hailed from a distant village named Torch, called as such for the ever-burning flame atop the hill at its center. Torch became a hub of smithing and metalworking due to the unique flame’s heat, and the site was considered sacred by the followers of Brigh. To maintain a semblance of autonomy, Torch paid the Technic League a monthly tribute of the gold it earned from its industry, but the League’s ever-changing demands limited the town’s growth and fomented increasing resentment.

Everything came to a head when the violet flame atop the Black Hill ceased to burn. In an effort to learn the cause, the town turned to one of its civil leaders, a wizard named Khonnir Baine. Callas suspected that the Technic League might have done something to hamper the flame, so while Khonnir explored the caves beneath the Black Hill, he used what influence he had around town to ask after the Technic League. Callas counted Khonnir among his friends, but when the mage failed to return from his second expedition, the cleric fled the town in fear for his life. The League would have killed him but for Tava’s intervention on the plains.

Although she swore an oath to Callas, Tava’s new-found faith burns brightly, and she slipped away in the middle of the night. Leaving her family and mentor behind, she makes her way towards Torch, to right the wrongs the League has created in the name of Brigh.

Appearance:
Tavarest has rocky, granite-like skin, marbled with steel-gray veins which shimmer an iridescent blue in direct sunlight. Her silvery, platinum hair is nearly metallic in appearance and offsets her electric-blue eyes. Standing 4 foot, 9 inches tall and weighing 162 lbs., she’s considered short and stocky by the local townsfolk even though she’s unusually tall and lean for an oread. In her travels, Tavarest has taken to wearing battered scale mail and wields a light hammer and heavy steel shield. This causes others to often mistake her for a female dwarf until closer inspection.

Personality:
Tavarest has a distant look about her with nigh-unreadable eyes even under moments of duress. Yet, like most adventurers, she possesses an earnest enthusiasm for exploration, always in search of new revelations which lead to a deeper understanding of the teachings and gifts of her goddess. This causes Tavarest to appear rigorously dogmatic when dealing with fragments of advanced technology, and she has little patience for those who abuse or disregard such things without valuing their true purpose. She holds an even worse opinion of those who hoard technology for themselves.
