Backstory:
Tai Reen grew up the son of two half elf parents, so unlike many of his ilk, his childhood was less of a struggle between two worlds, and more far more comfortable. Both of his parents, long-retired from adventuring, were Rangers and kept an protective eye on the town while they worked their own plot. They scared off bandits, predatory animals, and other natural (and occasionally unnatural) threats, though they preferred their simple, safe lives farming and spending time with their son. Tai grew up hearing of the adventures of his parents' youth-- daring tales of Brevoy's best swords and dangerous creatures-- from other people in town. Tai loved hearing about the adventures, and greatly lamented the fact that his parents seemed to have decided he wasn't to have any of his own. His parents saw it differently. Having recognized the dangers and having lost many of their own friends in their dangerous lives, Tai's parents elected to limit their sons exposure to their history, instead hoping that he'd choose a simpler life. Their hope died with them. Tai's parents valiantly gave their lives defending the town from a roaming pack of Owlbears. Though they managed to dispatch sufficient numbers of the creatures to discourage the pack and save the town, they did not themselves survive the injuries they'd sustained, ultimately leaving a teenage Tai orphaned. Tai threw himself into maintaining the farm, though his efforts weren't enough to keep pace with what needed to be done, and soon, much fell into disarray. When one day soon after, a Druid made his way to town, hoping to fill their empty 'protector' role, Tai humbly offered that the Druid could share his residence. Acaciano, the Druid, accepted immediately, realizing the young orphaned half-elf might be in need of a father-figure and role model more than a farm-hand. With Acaciano's help, the farm was set right, and Tai found himself with more free time than he'd had before. He soon found himself yearning for adventure again-- more than ever. He gifted the farm to a family friend, and followed Acaciano on his travels. Tai begged Acaciano to teach him swordplay, desperate not only for adventure, but also to learn to protect himself. After many requests, Acaciano finally acquiesced and put Tai on the path to becoming a swordsman, purchasing him a sword in a town they stopped in for supplies, and showing him what he himself knew of swordplay. Tai proved to be a natural talent, fast outpacing what his teacher knew. Once he was fully aware and appreciative of of Tai's potential, and not wishing to stunt his pupil's development, Acaciano sent him to Restov with a letter to his mother, requesting that she herself train Tai for a time. The Dama was unwilling to let Tai advance through her ranks with his simple, pragmatic style, but gave him cursory lessons all the same as a favor to Acaciano. Tai was sent back to Acaciano a year. Happy enough with the foundation he’d been given --which was far more than he’d ever expected to get-- Tai continued his training in swordplay in the field with Acaciano as they roamed. Tai flourished under Acaciano's tutelage, and while he never felt the calling to join the Druids themselves, he did heed the call to the Green Faith, and he accompanied Acaciano on all of his duties, his unique talents proving useful on many occasions. After a time, word of a dangerously large Owlbear pack made its way to Acaciano and Tai. They didn’t need to discuss the issue- they packed their things and set off for that part of Brevoy. Acaciano proudly let Tai lead the tracking efforts, and they soon found their way to the pack. The battle was long, raw, primal, and brutal, but Acaciano and Tai won the day. They failed to dispatch the leader of the pack, who fled with a slew of females, but they’d put off any immediate danger for the region. Happy with their efforts, they decided to trek towards Restov to resupply. While in Restov, Acaciano learned of the charter to the Stolen Lands being offered to adventuring groups. The next day he sent messages out to a number of druids he’d come to know, looking for interested souls. Hopefully they’d reply; he expected many would. For him, this was a perfect melding of his two interests, glory for Brevoy, and an opportunity to balance and protect the natural world. Naturally, Tai was coming along for the ride. He heard back over the next few days, in the affirmative, from a handful of capable Druids, and he and Tai managed to recruit some budding followers, not capable of much yet, but with potential. With pride, he submitted an application on behalf of their company, Voice of Trees". |
