I really like the necromancer as a whole character, when I played one time ago i raise his Level until 20, to improved his power add some of the spell or feats from other optional guides, Libris Mortiis is a good start!

Sometimes there a pain in the.... but you can set a number of parameters that trigger the encounter, also you can have tables with momsters of the correct type or CR, and if that is too much problem roll the encounter ahead of time and decide on the course of the sesion to used or not!
I used sometimes(proxy's) cheap plastic toys! like toy soldiers or dinosaurs, or robots,hahahahaha.
