As a young lad Sverlisk lived as a street performer in the city of Port Ice. One of the original holdings of the House of Surtova, the people of Port Ice tended to be suspicious of the less common races. The snake like appearance of the young nagaji certainly didn't do anything to ease people suspicion of him. Most of the coin that Sverlisk made came from merchants, travelers, or other more worldly people. In spite of his incredible knack for finding mutually beneficial arrangements and his gifts as a singer, Sverlisk found it incredibly difficult to make ends meet. Often times his masterful songs were interrupted by jeers from common folk and Surtovan nobility alike. Yet somehow the young nagaji always found a way to get just enough coin to scrape by and persevere. During one of his performances at an in, he particularly impressed a young noble from the house of Garess. Yolann Garess was not only impressed by Sverlisk's musical talent, but also his knowledge of the Brevic nobility and his keen sense of negotiation. It was agreed that Sverlisk would become the squire of the young Yolann Garess. It took Sverlisk only 3 years to become a trusted diplomat in the court of the court of young Sir Yolann. As a diplomat Sverlisk would often have to serve as an envoy to other nobles. An escort was sometimes required, and Yolann had none finer than Cainbar. It was in these diplomatic missions that Sverlisk became acquainted and eventually befriended the witty dwarf. On one such occasions it was Sverlisk's esteemed pleasure and honor to serve as the envoy to the house of Labeda. A marriage was to occur between the two great Brevic houses, and it was Sverlisk's mission to go and accompany Yolann's bride to be from Silver Hall to Grayhaven. Lady Abigail Labeda was both beautiful and charming, and would surely make a worthy bride for Sverlisk's master. Unfortunately 3 days out of Silver Hall the convoy transporting Lady Abigail was attacked by a band of nomadic centaurs. Sverlisk, Cainbar, and the rest of the escort tried valiantly to fight off the attackers, but to no avail. Alas the centaurs were too fast and their hooves too fleet. The rest of the escort had been slain, and Sverlisk and his dwarven comrade were all that remained to defend Lady Abigail. 3 Centaurs charged in. Cainbar managed to trip one with his mighty dorn dergar, and Sverlisk skewered it with his spear before being trampled by the next centaur. Before he could clamber back to his feet, Svelisk saw the centaurs riding to the southwest towards the stolen lands, Lady Abigail their prisoner. With both of them being badly injured, the dwarf and nagaji were in no condition to pursue the nomads. The instead searched the fallen centaurs for clues as to where the came from or where they were heading. The only thing of any not that was found was three small purses of coins minted with the crest of House Surtova. This evidence was immediately brought before Howlan Garess, leader of House Garess. However Howlan dismissed it as being circumstantial. Sverlisk pleaded with the noble to allow him to conduct a formal investigation, but it wasn't long before an envoy from the House Surtova, Illos Surtova, recognized the young nagaji. Aren't you that sniveling little street whelp who used to caterwaul up and down the streets of Port Ice? Is it not enough we had to endure your noise for so many years no we must tolerate this insults against our great houses honor? Illos accused Sverlisk of orchestrating the whole incident to cast a shadow on House Surtova. The blame for the attack was pinned on Sverlisk and he was to be tried for treason. That night while imprisoned under guard, Sverlisk was visited by his master Yolann. Yolann slipped the guardsmen some coin in exchange for 5 minutes of privacy with the prisoner. Once the guards were gone Yolann told Sverlisk that Cainbar was leaving for the stolen lands. "Sverlisk my loyal friend, I will do what I can to clear you name, but in the meantime you will be a fugitive. Use an alias and accompany Cainbar. You must take the evidence you have found and pursue the nomads into to Stolen Lands. You must finish your mission and bring me my bride to be. take this coin and go now, before the guards return." Sverlisk fled the prison, gathered his things, and met up with Cainbar on the road just outside of town. "Come now my Dwarven friend, it is time for us to complete our mission. We go now to the Stolen Lands." Sverlisk used his knowledge of disguise to assume a new identity, Esssker Lisstr, and went directly to the recruitment offices to sign up for one of the expeditions into the stolen lands.
It should be noted that due to the nature of his known spells and his tendency to not rely on them, that it is unlikely that any aside from Cainbar would know Sverlisk is capable of casting. |
