Backstory
Sugu Maartel was born and raised a city goblin in the Lower City in a family of engineers able to work the mixture of magic and machine. He was closest to his grandmother, Levini, who spent much of her youth adventuring around Khorvaire, getting involved in various exploits during the Last War, and even claiming to have been on the very first test flight of the very first airship. Sugu is probably the only person who actually believes all of her tall tales, but regardless of how much her stories were creatively embellished or not, her adventurous spirit is undeniable and has spread to Sugu. However, his much more practical father who spent most of his life barely knowing his world-traveling mother, has struggled to instill in Sugu the need for solid work habits and useful skills.

So Sugu compromised and learned all that he could about repairing and maintaining elemental craft, all the while learning about the world from his grandmother's not entirely accurate stories. When he was old enough, his grandmother gifted him her trusty wand, and Sugu joyfully finagled his way onto working some of the toughest and least desirable jobs on a lightning rail line. For several years, he worked an assortment of maintenance jobs on a variety of rail lines, all the while fascinated with seeing the world (albeit only from quick peaks from within the lightning rail train). It was also during this time that his exuberant curiosity made him the friend of every railway worker this side of the Mournland, as he'd happily listen to every story they'd tell and every spooky mystical rumor they'd heard long after their other co-workers tired of hearing them.

After a particularly tense situation that had Sugu dangling underneath a speeding train to replace several damaged conductor stones (as he tells the story, normally they stop to fix that sort of thing, but the dozen bandits chasing them made that a little difficult), a House Lyrandar noble who among the passengers was so impressed, he hired Sugu on the spot to work on airships instead. Always eager for some new adventure, Sugu accepted and was soon working in a major airship repair hub, learning the ins and outs of maintaining those ships, while happily listening to new stories and rumors from his fellow mechanics. Soon, however, he tired of working in the same location and yearned to travel again, and just maybe, have some adventures of his own.
