Strak sits down at the table, pulls out his spear, props it up, holding it firmly between his knees and starts trimming his fingernails on the blade.

"Please sit we have just begun speaking of the ruins, no plans have been made yet but one with skills in locks and traps would no doubt be very useful", Nevil says as he unconsciously places his hand over his coin purse.

"A strong arm and sharp weapons will also be needed", he says to Strak, "will you join us as well?"

Strak pries his spear out of the table, leaving a rather large divot of stressed wood, which he casually presses back down with his thumb.

"My arm, weapons and my speed will be necessary. These ruins may contain answers to my own questions, so I will come. Besides, if this place is fierce, then you need me. I do not think that this soft-looking group would last long without me."

"What, this old place?" Juddelo the barkeep asks with a laugh. "The Lost Shepherd, she's nothing as fancy as that. Still, we try to keep it comfortable enough. As for food, we've got it in plenty." Juddelo repeats the menu that he had just stated for Arent.

I will try some of your bread and water. That's all for now.

Quote:

"Hmmp, it's amazing what some people pass of as fact. Civilization is the cause of ulcers and lack of work and exercise lead to muscle atropy and heart disease." Arent confirms in his oh-so-knowledgable and unapologetic way.

"Come and sit with me, maybe if we bunch up service will be a bit quicker." Arent waves a hand over the open chairs at his table.

Strak stands at the bar. Then looks dubiously at his mug of drink for a moment, tastes it, stares at it again. Arent's hand wave attracts his attention. He then rather openly stares at the small group gathering at the table. Nevil, in particular, seems to garner an appraising stare.

Strak jogs through the streets until he finds the sign of the Shepherd. He stops and thinks, "This must be the place the guard had spoken of ...". Strak quickly appraises the building, unslings his long spear so it won't hit the door frame, pulls the door handle, strides in and stops after two steps with his mouth hanging open.

The other patrons see light from the door and a dark-skinned half-orc enter the room. Strak is tall and solidly built with black braided hair. His eyes are sharp and wary. But he gawking at the interior of the tavern. What is this? An Orc with a flash of blue eyes? His clothing consists of worn leather hides with a tougher outer leather armor. He seems to have a tattoo on his left arm.

"Howdy, traveler ..." comes a small voice. Strak pries his eyes away from the depths of the room looks down and says to the halfling, "Such comfort! Such warmth! Do you have any food?"

Strak does not notice the nervous titters from the bars other patrons as he lays down his pack and weapons on the floor nearby.

Huh...I guess I just assumed that double armor penalty was still in there. Okay, scratch that then. My bad.

Here is an old discussion on the matter. No definitive statement from TPTB, but it does seem to be gone. I also searched the Beta pdf and could not find a reference to any double penalty for swimming.

Wrym - I have a question about alignment. Okay to post here?
Sure! You can spoiler tag it, if you want.

Sweet!

Spoiler:
I selected Chaotic Neutral (CN) for Strak because it seems to be the best alignment for a Barbarian. Just so you know, I am not planning to play CN = crazy man.

In my opinion, Strak is a loner. His upbringing has been tough and poor. He is not vindictive, but he is wary and has learned that he can only rely on himself.

He has an ingrained sense of tradition since he was part of Barbarian tribe, but on the other hand, anyone who has ever been friend or family has either rejected him or been killed. So he tends to reject outside influences.

It is definitely not my goal to be random or difficult with the rest of the party, rather Strak has a lot of natural fighting ability, a natural independent streak and a tendency to think with his weapon rather than consult his allies.

So this brings me to my questions:

a) am I overthinking this? ;)

b) have I selected the correct alignment in your opinion?

Wrym - I have a question about alignment. Okay to post here?

Guys, I got in a car wreck tonight. I'm okay, but my car...not so much. Anyway, it kind of put a damper on my plans to check character sheets for tonight. I'll be on it soon, though. Hang tight. Thanks!

Very sorry to hear about your accident. Glad you are ok.

Quick skill question. Does PF Beta no longer give the (x skill points + Int) x 4 for first level? I can't find a clarification. ~thinks~ Oh well, back to the book!

Edit - Never mind! I just figured it out! Gahhh!!! I will miss that mass amount of skill points!

You still get 3x the skills that I get, lucky bard, try being a cleric apparently all we do is pray and have sub-standard combat practice.
~wistles innocently~ Well, us Bards need to keep up with EVERYTHING!!!

Thankfully, Barbarians only need to be able to move fast and kill things that don't move that fast. Keeps skill selections straightforward.

Ok,sorry for the redundancy, but I am still getting upto speed on the ins and outs of this here website....

I have posted all my stats and backstory to my profile homepage. All further updates will appear there. :)

Strak the Swift - character story:

Strak is tall, lean, and solidly built. He has long, black, braided hair to the shoulders, dark grey skin, unusual blue eyes and an intricate tribal tattoo on his left arm and back. The tattoo is incomplete and appears to want to continue onto his right arm, which is bare.
Strak wears simple leather outfit with boots and reinforced studded leather jacket that serves as armor. He has a long-spear slung across his back along with a quiver and 3 javelins. He has also has a crude punching dagger hanging from his belt. He has few other possessions apart from wilderness survival gear stowed in his pack. The single exception being a small strip of cloth that is kept under his leathers. The cloth is a stylized design that he has had as long as he can remember.
Strak was raised in an Orc tribe by his Orcish mother in the wilds north of Brindenford. For reasons unknown to him, he was sold/traded to a local barbarian tribe as a slave at about 5 years of age. He was treated harshly by the tribe treated poorly due to his Orcish heritage. He was treated as common property by the tribe and lived little better than the tribal hounds. Strak survived through sheer determination. At the age of 10, Strak was attacked by an older youth, the son of one of the barbarian tribesmen. Strak defended himself and in an unexpected display of strength and speed, he killed the young man who was bullying him. This act gained the grudging respect of the tribe. Being short on manpower for the coming winter season, Strak was given to the bereaved family as chattel instead of being killed or exiled for his audacity.
Time passed and Strak continued to grow in strength and skill as a servant and hunter for his new family. At age 15, Strak joined the tribe warriors in defense of the camp during a warg incursion. He was wounded, yet he fought bravely and managed to bring down a warg with his bare hands. At that point, he was granted the use of weapon and seemed to be on his way towards being accepted as part of the tribe. However, at age 18, the younger son of his adopted family, who still resented Strak for killing his brother, lied about Strak's behavior during a critical coming of age ceremony. His Orcish heritage did not help him and the tribe choose to believe the younger son version of events. Strak was exiled from the tribe and has spent the last half year wandering, alternatively living off the land and occasionally selling his services as a scout to a local noble who recognized Strak's skills.
Unfortunately, Strak's last mission for the noble did not go well. The noble's camp was attacked while Strak was reporting. The attack included overwhelming magical power and Strak barely escaped with his life. The noble's camp was wiped out and Strak, having now lost his third family in his young life, discovered that he felt a sense of obligation to avenge his employer. Not being quite sure how to proceed, he decided to risk a rare visit to civilization, aka, Brindenford to seek information and help.

Edited the story per your comments and embellished a bit more. Should be some interesting plot hooks in there as well.

As usual, I will edit to your preference, Wyrm.

Basilforth, you had me with Strak's b/g until I got to the end part about him being locked up in the town jail. The way Brindenford is set up on the website is as an important base of operations for the PCs. There might even be some elements of the Delve that are important to the town...and vice versa. ;) The point is that some things won't work as well if the party is a bunch of outlaws in trouble with the town authorities. Good relations are best.

No problem, I will edit accordingly. :)

Proposed character story for Strak the Barbarian for Wyrm's review. Definitely open for suggestions.

Spoiler:

I made this up just so I would have something handy. I have another idea brewing that I might toss out, but I didn't want to hold things up.

Strak was raised as an orphan by a tribe of Barbarians in the wilds north of Brindenford. He was treated harshly by the tribe and virtually enslaved due to his orcish heritage. However at the age of 10, he killed the son of one of the tribesmen who was bullying him. This act gained the respect of the tribe and the family adopted him as a "son". While better than his previous lot, he was still more an indentured servant than part of the family. But that condition was infinitely preferable to wandering the wilds on his own. As the years past, Strak's strength and warrior manifested and he was grudging accepted as part of the tribe. However, at age 18, the younger son of his adopted family, who still resented Strak for killing his brother, lied about Strak's behavior during a coming of age ceremony. His orcish heritage did not help him and the tribe choose to believe the younger son version of events. Strak was exiled from the tribe and has spent the last half year wandering, alternatively living off the land and occasionally selling his services as a scout to a local noble who recognized Strak's warrior skills. Unfortunately, Strak's last mission for the noble did not go well. The noble's camp was attacked, while Strak was reporting. Strak was knocked unconscious, and awoke in the prison of Brindenford.

I was thinking that perhaps the party could be given a lead that causes them to spring me from jail. Need to consider what to do about possessions. I am willing to start with nada but clothing. That might be fun.

Quick question...

Do you guys want to begin in the town Brindenford and role-play the formation of the party, or would you rather handwave all of that and start right at the dungeon's door?

No one's answered this question yet. Did you guys miss it, or does no one have an opinion either way?

I vote for starting in Brindenford. I expect to have my Barbarian drafted for your review later this evening. I assume that we post the details in our profile? Are we using the Character traits?

My half-orc will be known as Strak.
